How to Collect XP Fast in Minecraft (Java and Bedrock, 2026)

Guardian farms usually lead for raw XP, Enderman farms are close behind, and spawners are the best early-game choice. Learn the requirements, reported rates, risks and edition differences for every major method.

The fastest repeatable XP in Minecraft usually comes from a mob farm. Community guides generally place guardian farms first for raw output, with Enderman farms close behind and easier to build once you can reach the End. Before those late-game projects, a zombie or skeleton spawner is the most practical source, while furnace smelting, Nether quartz and sculk provide useful early or backup XP.

Exact rates change with Minecraft version, edition and farm design. Treat hourly figures below as estimates, not guarantees, and check the current Minecraft Wiki for the Java or Bedrock rules you are using.

Fastest XP methods at a glance

Method Reported output or XP value Progression requirement What else it produces Confidence and cautions
Guardian farm Ranked fastest by community guides; one guide claims a very high rate, but that figure is not independently supported Ocean monument and a substantial build Prismarine and fish, depending on design Guardian XP is about 10 per source; rates vary sharply by edition and design
Enderman farm Described by guides as nearly as fast as a guardian farm Beat the game and reach the End Ender pearls Platform and spawning details differ between guides and editions
Gold or zombified-piglin farm Guides say a good design can reach level 100 in roughly one hour; single-guide claim Mid-to-late game Nether access Gold Output depends heavily on design and edition
Zombie or skeleton spawner Immediate, repeatable XP; no universal hourly number established Find a dungeon spawner Common mob drops Reliable early-game option in Java and Bedrock when mobs are player-killed
Furnace or smelter Single-furnace cactus setup: about 360 XP per real-time hour; potatoes about 252 XP/hour and kelp about 72 XP/hour under stated assumptions Fuel, farmable input and a furnace Smelted food or materials Cactus yield differs between Java and Bedrock; figures are tutorial estimates
Nether quartz mining One guide claims three to four levels in minutes at Y=15 Nether access and safe mining gear Quartz Single-guide claim; dangerous and not automatic
Sculk farming Sculk block: 1 XP; sculk sensor or shrieker: 5 XP Access to sculk-producing areas or a farm Sculk blocks and related items Values summarized from the Minecraft Wiki farming tutorial

How Minecraft XP actually works

XP appears as floating orbs. Most mobs award orbs only when the final damage is credited to a player or a tamed wolf. A fall, suffocation, fire, or another non-player kill normally does not award the combat XP you are trying to farm. A farm can therefore produce mountains of drops while giving you little or no XP if its killing chamber finishes mobs without player attribution.

Hostile mobs generally award more XP than passive mobs. Baby animals, bats, golems and villagers give no XP according to the Minecraft Wiki’s experience rules. An Enderman is listed at about 5 XP, while a guardian is about 10 XP; another description specifies two large guardian orbs worth 7 and 3 XP. These are per-source values, not an hourly farm rate.

The game can absorb only about 10 XP orbs per second, according to community guides. Larger orbs carry more XP, so guardian farms can move more experience through that collection limit than farms that create many tiny orbs. This is one reason raw mob count does not automatically equal faster leveling.

Levels are not a linear currency

One level near the bottom of the bar requires less XP than one level near the top. A claim such as level 30 in seconds is therefore not portable across versions, farm designs or starting levels. Compare methods by the XP they deliver and by how quickly they refill the level range you actually need, rather than by a single dramatic level claim.

What happens when you die

On death, the player drops 7 times their current level in XP, capped at 100 points; any remaining XP is lost. Carrying levels from a dangerous Nether mining trip or an exposed AFK platform is a real risk. Bank valuable levels by enchanting or repairing when appropriate before attempting a high-risk journey.

Fixed XP events

The Ender Dragon gives 12,000 XP on the first kill and 500 XP on later kills. Those values come from the game rules and cannot be increased by changing a farm design, so the dragon is a milestone burst rather than a repeatable everyday method.

1. Guardian farms: the highest raw-speed option

Community guides generally rank a guardian farm as the fastest XP farm. Guardians award roughly twice the XP of an Enderman per source, and their larger orbs make the approximately 10-orbs-per-second collection limit less restrictive. A well-designed farm also supplies prismarine-related drops, so it can serve a building project while you level.

What you must have

  • An ocean monument and a way to operate safely around guardians and elder guardians.
  • A spawning, transport and killing design suited to your edition.
  • A collection point where you can deliver the final hit, or another mechanism that reliably preserves player XP attribution.
  • Storage and a plan for disposing of unwanted drops; overflowing collection systems reduce uptime.

Does the monument need to be drained?

Guides disagree. Some designs drain the monument and surrounding water to control spawning; others work without completely draining it. Draining adds a large preparation cost but can make spawn control predictable. A no-drain design may be faster to start but can require more careful spawn-proofing and water management. Follow a tutorial tested for your exact Java or Bedrock release rather than mixing dimensions from different designs.

How to use one efficiently

  1. Confirm the farm’s edition and game-version target before collecting materials.
  2. Build the spawning and transport sections exactly as that design specifies; small changes to water flow or spawning surfaces can cut rates.
  3. Stand at the designated kill or collection position so the game keeps XP eligible for you.
  4. Empty storage and remove excess items before a long session.
  5. Measure output over a consistent period. Community numbers are estimates, and an advertised maximum is not a promise for every world.

One guide advertises an extremely high hourly figure, but no retrievable source supports it, so it should not be used as a planning number. Expect your edition, simulation distance, nearby caves and design details to matter more than a headline rate.

2. Enderman farms: nearly as fast and usually simpler

Enderman farms are the leading alternative after guardian farms. Guides describe them as nearly as fast and much easier to build, but they require access to the End, which means defeating the dragon first. Endermen also provide ender pearls, useful for travel and further automation.

Construction and operation

  1. Reach the End and choose a design written for your edition. The End’s void makes mistakes costly, so bring blocks, a water bucket where valid, and a recovery plan.
  2. Build the spawning platform, lure or funnel arrangement and player-safe killing position exactly as specified. Platform notes differ between guides; do not assume a Java layout works on Bedrock.
  3. Keep the final damage under your control if the design relies on player-killed mobs for XP.
  4. Stand at the farm’s prescribed distance so Endermen spawn efficiently while remaining within the farm’s active area.
  5. Collect pearls and XP regularly instead of allowing drops to fill the chamber.

An online calculator claiming 60 to 100 or more levels per hour is far above most guide estimates and should be treated as an outlier. Use measured results from a tutorial that matches your version.

3. Gold and zombified-piglin farms

A gold or zombified-piglin farm is a strong mid-to-late-game compromise. Guides report that a good design can reach level 100 in roughly one hour, but that is a single-guide claim and depends on the farm, edition and operating conditions. The extra gold can be as valuable as the XP for powered rails, bartering or building.

When it makes sense

  • You already have reliable Nether travel and can build safely in a hostile environment.
  • You want a dual-purpose installation instead of an XP-only farm.
  • You can keep the killing method player-attributed and prevent item overflow.

Because Nether spawning rules and rates differ between Java and Bedrock, select a current design for your edition. A farm that is excellent in one edition may be mediocre or nonfunctional in the other.

4. Spawner farms: the best early-game answer

If you have not reached the End, a zombie or skeleton dungeon spawner is usually the most practical XP source. It starts producing immediately after you secure the room and requires far less material than a monument or End farm. The same setup supplies bones, arrows, rotten flesh and other ordinary drops.

Basic spawner-farm workflow

  1. Locate a zombie or skeleton spawner and mark its position so you can return safely.
  2. Light and secure the surrounding area while you work; keep the spawner from filling the room during construction.
  3. Shape the room and water or transport path according to a current tutorial for your edition, directing mobs toward a controlled collection point.
  4. Provide a safe place where you can deliver the final hit. If the design kills mobs entirely through falls or other automation, it may not award the combat XP you expect.
  5. Use the farm in short sessions, collect the orbs and clear storage before the chamber backs up.

There is no universal XP-per-hour figure for every spawner because spawn timing, room geometry and player distance change the result. Its advantage is reliability and low progression cost, not a record-breaking rate.

5. Furnace and smelter farms

Smelting is slower than a dedicated mob farm but can run while you gather fuel or materials. A Minecraft Wiki farming tutorial summary estimates that one furnace burning about two stacks, or 120 cactus, per Minecraft day yields about 360 XP per real-time hour. The same guidance cites about 252 XP per hour for potatoes and 72 XP per hour for kelp under stated assumptions. These figures are tutorial estimates, not universal benchmarks.

Choosing an input

Input Reported XP rate Important qualification
Cactus About 360 XP per real-time hour from a single-furnace setup Uses roughly 120 cactus per Minecraft day; cactus XP differs between Java and Bedrock
Potatoes About 252 XP per hour Guide estimate under its stated fuel and throughput assumptions
Kelp About 72 XP per hour Guide estimate under its stated assumptions

Use a smelter when you value quiet, predictable progress and a useful output more than maximum speed. Verify how your edition stores and awards furnace XP, and collect output in the way your design specifies so accumulated experience is not left inaccessible.

6. Nether quartz mining: quick active XP

One guide recommends strip mining Nether quartz at Y=15 and claims three to four levels in minutes. That is a single-guide observation, not a guaranteed rate. Quartz mining is active rather than automatic, and the Nether adds lava, hostile mobs and fall hazards.

Risk controls

  • Carry fire protection or fire-resistance options appropriate to your stage of progression.
  • Mine from a secured tunnel rather than exposing yourself to large open cavities.
  • Mark the route to your portal and keep a spare way home.
  • Deposit quartz and spend levels before continuing if the trip becomes long or dangerous.

Quartz is best viewed as a burst method while building in the Nether, not a replacement for a farm you can run repeatedly.

7. Sculk farms and mining

The Minecraft Wiki farming tutorial summary gives 1 XP for breaking a sculk block and 5 XP for breaking a sculk sensor or sculk shrieker. A sculk-based setup can therefore turn access to a sculk-producing area into renewable experience, but its practical rate depends on how quickly you can create and harvest blocks.

Which method should you build?

Your situation Best starting choice Why
Early survival, no Nether or End Zombie or skeleton spawner Immediate XP with modest construction and useful drops
Nether unlocked, End not yet reached Spawner, quartz mining or a gold farm if you are ready for a major build Choose between safety, active speed and automation
End unlocked and you want a comparatively simple high-output farm Enderman farm Near-guardian speed according to guides, plus pearls
Maximum long-term output and you can invest heavily Guardian farm Highest community ranking, but the largest preparation burden
You want XP while processing a useful resource Furnace or smelter Lower rate, but steady production and valuable outputs
You need a short burst while exploring Nether quartz or sculk No large farm required, but rates and safety are less predictable

How to improve any XP farm’s real results

Match the tutorial to your edition and version

Java and Bedrock do not always share the same spawn behavior, furnace results or farm rates. A design labelled for Java may fail on Bedrock, and an old tutorial may describe mechanics changed by a later update. Check the publication’s target version and the current Minecraft Wiki before committing rare materials.

Protect player attribution

Keep the final hit under player or tamed-wolf control whenever XP is the goal. Test with a small batch before leaving a farm running: if drops arrive but no orbs do, the killing method is the first thing to inspect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control nearby spawning

Guardian and Enderman farms are especially sensitive to where the game can spawn mobs. Follow the design’s instructions for location, platform height and surrounding spawn-proofing. Nearby caves, platforms or unloaded sections can divert spawns and make a good design appear slow.

Prevent collection bottlenecks

The approximately 10-orbs-per-second absorption limit means a collection point can become the bottleneck. Stand where orbs reach you quickly, avoid obstructing the path with entities or blocks, and keep item storage from filling. Larger guardian orbs help, but they do not remove the need for a clear collection area.

Measure instead of trusting a headline

  1. Start from a known level and record the time.
  2. Run the farm under normal play conditions for a consistent interval.
  3. Record levels gained, XP-bar progress and useful drops separately.
  4. Repeat on your actual edition and version before redesigning the farm.

This simple test exposes claims that depend on ideal simulation distance, a particular difficulty or a one-time burst of stored mobs.

Common mistakes and fixes

“The farm produces drops but no XP.”

Check whether the mobs die from a fall, fire, suffocation or another non-player cause. Move the final damage to a player-controlled position or use the design’s intended attribution method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The advertised rate is much higher than mine.”

Confirm edition, version, difficulty, simulation distance and player position. Then inspect nearby spawnable spaces, collection overflow and whether the tutorial assumes a drained monument or other preparation you skipped.

“I lost a full evening of levels.”

Death drops 7 times your current level in XP, capped at 100 points, and the rest disappears. Spend levels before dangerous construction, keep a safe route home and avoid AFK sessions in unprotected areas.

“A level-100 promise does not match my experience.”

That figure is a guide-specific estimate for a good gold or zombified-piglin design, not a game guarantee. Treat it as an upper-end planning example and measure your own farm.

“I built an old ‘level 30 in seconds’ farm.”

Such claims are not version-independent. Compare the tutorial’s release and edition with your world, and rebuild only after confirming the current spawning and XP rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical progression route

  1. Start with a spawner. It gives immediate, player-attributed XP while you gather materials for larger projects.
  2. Add a furnace line. Smelt cactus, potatoes or kelp when you have surplus input and want background progress.
  3. Use quartz for short-term needs. Mine safely in the Nether when you need a few levels and can accept the risk.
  4. Reach the End. Once the dragon is defeated, an Enderman farm becomes the simpler high-output upgrade for many players.
  5. Build a guardian farm when the investment pays off. Choose a current, edition-specific design and decide in advance whether draining the monument is worth the preparation.
  6. Keep a secondary method. A spawner or smelter remains useful when a large farm is being repaired, unloaded or temporarily unsuitable for your current goal.

The shortest path to more XP is therefore not always the farm with the largest theoretical number. Build the fastest method you can operate safely and consistently, then upgrade when your progression removes the next bottleneck.
