You can clone your own voice with AI for uses such as narration, dubbing, or accessibility—but first check the service’s rules, how it handles your recordings, and whether your audience or platform needs a disclosure. To clone someone else’s voice, get explicit permission and confirm you have the legal right to use it; consent alone may not satisfy a provider’s rules. Never use a clone to deceive, harass, or cause harm.
Whose voice can you clone?
The clearest choice is your own voice. Voice cloning can also support accessibility, including helping someone who has lost their voice communicate in a voice that sounds like them. The same technology can enable fraud, extortion, deceptive impersonation, or appropriation of creative work, so the intended use matters as much as the recording itself. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) discusses both the benefits and risks of AI-enabled voice cloning in its November 2023 overview.

If you want to use another person’s voice, obtain explicit permission and make sure you have the legal right to use it for the purpose you intend. As practical—not universally required—recordkeeping, document the agreed uses, how long permission lasts, and any limits. Do not assume that a person’s agreement overrides a platform’s restrictions.
Check the cloning feature’s rules before recording
Service policies can be stricter than a general consent standard. For example, ElevenLabs says its Professional Voice Clone feature can only be used to create a clone of your own voice. Even with consent, you cannot create that feature’s clone of someone else; the other person must create and verify their own clone, then share it privately if they choose. That is a provider-specific example, not a rule for every service. Before you upload samples, check the exact feature’s requirements for identity verification, consent, permitted uses, impersonation, and sharing. A service may restrict a use even if you believe you have permission.
Understand what happens to uploaded audio
Before submitting recordings, review the provider’s current terms and settings. Look specifically for whether audio or related data may be used to improve models, how long it is retained, and what opt-out or deletion controls are available. These details can vary by service, account type, and feature.

ElevenLabs says certain submitted data is used to improve its audio models, and that it does not use data to clone a user’s voice without consent. It says Enterprise data is excluded from training by default, except as needed to provide Enterprise services, and that users can opt out of future data use in settings. Check its data-use documentation and your account’s current controls before uploading. FTC staff have also emphasized clear notice and affirmative express consent when companies use consumer data for other purposes in their privacy guidance.

Disclosure expectations depend on the platform and the situation; there is no universal threshold established here. YouTube’s surfaced guidance gives cloning your own voice for voiceovers or dubbing as an example that does not require altered-content disclosure. That example should not be generalized to other platforms, jurisdictions, or cases involving impersonation. Review the live YouTube altered-content guidance and the rules for wherever you publish.

Even where a platform does not require a label, explain that audio is synthetic when leaving that fact undisclosed could mislead listeners—for example, when the voice might reasonably be taken as a real person speaking words they did not say. Follow applicable platform rules and law for the specific use.

Verification, monitoring, high-risk voice blocks, reporting tools, watermarking, and detection systems can reduce some risks. They cannot guarantee that a clone will not be misused, or prove on their own that a recording is authentic. ElevenLabs describes its provider-specific measures on its safety page. The FTC identifies prevention and authentication, real-time detection, and post-use evaluation as intervention points, while cautioning that no single approach solves the problem in its April 2024 discussion.

A practical consent and privacy checklist
- Choose the voice and purpose. Prefer your own voice. For another person’s voice, obtain explicit permission and confirm legal rights for the intended use.
- Record the boundaries. If working with another person, write down permitted uses, duration, and limits so both sides have a clear reference. This is practical guidance, not a universal legal requirement.
- Read the feature-specific rules. Check verification, consent, impersonation, and sharing requirements. Do not assume permission makes every feature available.
- Review data controls before upload. Check training use, retention, opt-out, and deletion provisions in current terms and account settings.
- Plan publication and disclosure. Check the destination platform’s current policy and disclose synthetic audio where required or where silence could mislead the audience.
- Keep safeguards in perspective. Use available verification and reporting tools, but do not treat them as guarantees of authenticity or protection from misuse.
