In Playwright, await the button click, wait for the page to show the result you need, and then capture it with page.screenshot(). The click normally waits for actionability and any navigation it starts, but it does not guarantee that every later, app-specific update is ready.
Click, wait for the result, then capture
Use a locator that identifies the button by its accessible role and name where possible. Await the click so the screenshot cannot run ahead of the interaction. Then wait for a meaningful outcome if the page updates asynchronously.

Choose a wait condition that proves the click worked
When the click promise resolves, ask what visible or navigational state must be present in the screenshot. Wait for that state rather than relying on an arbitrary delay.
- A message appears: wait for the confirmation or status text to become visible.
- A dialog opens: wait for the dialog to become visible before capture.
- The page changes: wait for the expected heading or other content to appear.
- The click navigates: the click normally waits for initiated navigation; if the destination renders additional asynchronous content, wait for that content too.
For example, a button that reveals data without navigation needs a condition tied to the revealed data. A click that starts a navigation may still need a separate condition for the destination’s final content. There is no single wait condition that is correct for every application.

Capture the right scope
- Viewport: use
page.screenshot()for the currently visible page area. - Full page: use the screenshot option
fullPage: truewhen the evidence needs to include the full scrollable document. - One element: use the locator’s screenshot method when only a particular component matters.
Choose based on what the image needs to demonstrate; a full-page image is not automatically better if the relevant result is a single component. See the Playwright screenshots guide and Page API.

Keep visual captures stable
For a screenshot intended as a visual test baseline, the semantic wait still matters: first establish that the intended post-click state is present. Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() additionally waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the final capture with an expectation. That helps with visual stability; it does not replace waiting for the correct post-click state. Playwright visual comparisons

Troubleshooting
- The screenshot shows the page before the click: make sure the click is awaited and that the screenshot call comes after it.
- The click runs but the new content is missing: wait for a visible, app-specific result such as a message, dialog, changed heading, or loaded data before capture.
- The locator cannot click the button: confirm that it identifies the intended button and that the element is attached and actionable. Locator clicks perform actionability checks and scroll the target into view, but an absent or obstructed target may still prevent the action.
- The page navigates but the destination looks incomplete: wait for a destination-specific state; navigation completion alone may precede app-rendered content.
- Visual comparisons differ between runs: stabilize the page state and run captures in a consistent browser and host environment, since rendering can vary across machines and settings.
Using a different screenshot API
“Screenshot API” does not identify one universal interface. The example above is specifically for JavaScript Playwright; hosted providers and Playwright MCP may expose different methods and synchronization behavior. Confirm the selected tool’s current documentation before translating the sequence.
