If your Chromatic build is still marked “in progress,” first check how long it has been in that state. Chromatic says it automatically cancels a build that remains stuck for two hours. If it has been stuck longer, contact [email protected] or use Chromatic’s in-app chat. Before then, compare the Chromatic build page with the CI run that started it; the two statuses and their logs can help you see where work is still happening.
What to do first
- Check the elapsed time. Note when the build began or when it first appeared stuck. Chromatic’s FAQ says builds stuck in progress are automatically canceled after two hours; it does not document an immediate manual-cancel path. See Chromatic’s build cancellation FAQ.
- Open the Chromatic build page and the CI run. Check whether the CI job is still running, has failed, or has finished while Chromatic still shows the build in progress. Chromatic’s CLI and GitHub Action publish Storybook and start Chromatic tests when those tests are enabled, so CI logs can help locate which step is active. Storybook’s Chromatic integration documentation describes the CLI and action.
- Compare your workflow with the official setup. Verify that the repository is checked out, dependencies are installed, and the Chromatic project token is available as a CI secret. Storybook’s publishing guidance also shows a GitHub Actions example using full Git history (`fetch-depth: 0`). Treat these as checks against the example, not guaranteed fixes for every stuck build. See Publish Storybook and Deploy Storybook.
- If it is still stuck after two hours, contact support. Send the build URL, approximate start time, CI provider, workflow run link, and relevant logs so support can investigate the specific run. Chromatic documents support email and in-app chat as the escalation routes.
Use the two status pages to narrow down the issue
A Chromatic build and the CI job that invokes it are related, but they are not the same status. The CI job may still be executing, or it may have completed while the Chromatic page remains in progress. Check the timestamps and logs for the publish or test step before deciding what happened. A separate Storybook test-runner job is another distinct process: Storybook describes the test runner as a tool that can run locally or in CI, while Chromatic is a cloud service for visual and component tests integrated with a git provider. See Storybook’s test-runner documentation.

- CI is still running: Inspect the active step and its output. The build page alone does not show whether the workflow is still working.
- CI finished but Chromatic remains in progress: Save both links and the relevant logs. If the two-hour threshold has passed, send those details to Chromatic support.
- Both show a failure: Use the CI error and Chromatic build details to investigate that specific failure rather than assuming every stuck build has the same cause.
Check workflow configuration without assuming a root cause
The available Chromatic and Storybook guidance establishes a cancellation threshold and describes the publishing workflow, but it does not identify one universal cause for a build becoming stuck. A missing token, a workflow problem, or a provider incident should not be assumed without evidence from the affected run.
For a GitHub Actions setup, compare the workflow with Storybook’s example and confirm the token is stored as a secret and passed to the Chromatic step. Check that checkout and dependency-install steps complete, then review the Chromatic action’s logs. Storybook’s example includes `fetch-depth: 0`; this is a workflow detail to compare, not a general fix. Compatibility details can change, so consult the live Chromatic integration page for supported platform and version combinations. It currently describes support for the latest LTS Ubuntu, Windows Server, and macOS versions; Node.js Current, Active, or Maintenance (LTS) releases; and Storybook 6.5 or later, while noting that other combinations may work without being officially supported.

What not to confuse with Chromatic’s timeout
Storybook’s test-runner documentation includes a sample CI recipe that builds Storybook, serves it, waits for port 6006, and runs tests. Its example uses a 60-minute CI job timeout. That is a timeout for the example CI job, not Chromatic’s automatic-cancellation threshold. Do not use the test-runner job timeout as a substitute for Chromatic’s two-hour guidance.

ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first if you need an API or MCP server for capturing website screenshots rather than diagnosing this Chromatic build. Its screenshot API accepts a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF; it is not a fix for a stuck Chromatic build.
