This is a low-risk troubleshooting step suggested by a Google Help Community Product Expert, not a Google-authored guarantee or a fix for every sign-in or loading problem.
Before you change anything, note exactly what fails: signing in, opening a particular chat, or getting a response. Then compare the Android app with Gemini on the web and, if appropriate, compare accounts. These checks help identify the scope of the issue; they do not prove its cause.

First work out where the problem is happening
Before changing app settings, note the exact symptom and check whether it affects only Gemini on your Android phone. That distinction helps you avoid treating every failure as a cache problem. A sign-in failure, a chat that will not open, and a prompt that receives no response are different observations, even if they all feel like Gemini is not working.
Keep the first comparison simple. Retry the same action and note what happens, then check the same account on Gemini’s web version in a supported browser. If you have access to another eligible Google Account, you can also compare accounts on the same device. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether the result changed after a particular step.

| Gemini fails in the Android app, but works on the web | Start with the app-specific steps below, including clearing Gemini’s cache. Record that the web version works; it narrows the symptom to the app experience without proving what caused it. |
| Gemini fails in both the app and on the web | Clearing the Android app cache may not address the issue. Check connectivity and account eligibility, then report the persistent problem. |
| The problem appears with one Google Account but not another | Consider account eligibility or account-specific settings rather than assuming the phone’s cache is the cause. A community post described an account-specific web issue across devices, but an individual report does not establish a general cause. |
| Only one chat fails to load | Record that detail and compare with another chat or the web version. The support reports do not establish a precise diagnosis for the message “Loading chat failed.” |
| The app opens, but a prompt gets no response | Note whether other app functions work and compare the same account on the web. A report of no response is a symptom to describe, not a diagnosis of cache, connectivity, account, or service trouble. |
These checks narrow down the scope; they do not diagnose an outage or prove what caused the failure. Community posts use descriptions such as “Gemini apps are facing issues with login, loading, & responses,” “Gemini doesn’t work on android phone,” and “Loading chat failed.” Those are user descriptions, not official error categories.
Clear the Gemini app cache on Android
Android’s cache is temporary app data. The suggested first step is to clear the cache for Gemini itself. The exact menu labels and layout can vary by Android version and phone manufacturer, so the words on your screen may not match the path exactly. Look for the app-management area in Settings and the storage controls for Gemini.
- Open your phone’s Settings.
- Open Apps or the app-management screen, then select Gemini. If you do not see it in the list, use Settings search for “Gemini.”
- Open Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache. Check the wording before confirming; do not choose Clear storage or Clear data for this first step.
- Reopen Gemini and try the action that was failing, such as signing in or opening a chat. Note whether the result is different.
The path above comes from advice by a Product Expert in the Google Help Community. It is a reasonable low-risk check, but community advice and the reports reviewed do not establish that cache clearing is a universal or guaranteed fix. If nothing changes, that is useful information: continue with the other checks instead of repeating the same cache-clearing step over and over.
If the app has more than one symptom, test them separately. For example, retry signing in first, then check whether a chat opens. If sign-in still fails, note that; if sign-in succeeds but one chat does not load, note that as a separate result. This makes a support report more specific and avoids describing several different failures as one unexplained problem.
Optional: clear the Google app cache separately
A community Product Expert also suggests clearing the Google app cache. This is separate from clearing Gemini’s cache: in Android Settings, open Apps > Google > Storage or Storage & cache, then choose Clear cache. Menu labels vary. Try this as a separate step so you can tell whether the symptom changes; it is community guidance, not a required step or an official Google procedure.
Do not treat the two cache controls as one combined reset. First try clearing Gemini’s cache and test the same action. If you then choose to try the Google app cache, test again and record the result separately. If you cannot find the Google app in your Settings list, do not substitute a different app or select a broader reset; continue with the other troubleshooting checks.

Do not confuse clearing cache with clearing data
Clear cache and Clear storage/data are different controls. The community advice surfaced for a more disruptive reset warns that clearing storage or data can reset local app state and may mean signing in again. Prefer clearing cache first. Do not use Clear storage/data as though it were the same action, or as a way to delete Gemini chat history from your Google Account.
If a screen offers both buttons, pause and verify which one you are selecting. The initial instruction is specifically to choose Clear cache. If you already cleared storage or data, the community warning indicates that local app state may have reset and you may need to sign in again. That does not establish that account-level Gemini Apps Activity has been deleted.
Try the remaining low-risk checks in order
If clearing cache does not help, make one change at a time and retry the same action. That makes it easier to see whether anything changed. Keep a short note of the order: for example, “cleared Gemini cache—no change,” then “switched connection—chat opened.” A result after a step is an observation, not necessarily proof that the step fixed the underlying cause.
- Check the connection. If available, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, reconnect, and try again. Community replies recommend checking connectivity, but that does not establish that a network problem is the cause in your case. If the symptom is unchanged on either connection, note that rather than assuming the connection is ruled out completely.
- Check for app updates. Open Google Play and check for updates to both Gemini and the Google app. Updating is a community-recommended troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix. If updates are available and you install them, retry the same action afterward so you know whether the result changed.
- Restart the phone. After checking for updates, restart the Android device and retry Gemini. This too is community guidance rather than a verified resolution. Record whether the app behaves differently after the restart.
- Compare with Gemini on the web. Try the web version in a supported browser. If it works there but not in the app, the issue may be limited to the app experience; if it fails in both places, do not assume clearing the app cache will resolve it. Report what you observed on each surface.
- Refresh the account session if appropriate. Community support replies recommend signing out and back in. This may refresh a session, but it should not be treated as a way to remove account restrictions or fix a service-side problem. Make sure you can sign back in before signing out.
Retry the same symptom after each step—for example, opening the same chat—rather than changing several things at once. If a step makes no difference, continue to the account and escalation checks rather than repeatedly clearing cache. If you cannot sign in, do not sign out merely to try a session refresh; first make sure you can access the account and complete the sign-in process again.
When comparing app and web, keep the account consistent if possible. An app test with one account and a web test with another does not show whether the difference is due to the app or the account. Similarly, compare the same type of action when practical: a failure opening one chat is not directly comparable to a successful sign-in alone.
Check that your Google Account can use the Android app
Google’s Android Help says a Google Account is required to sign in to the Gemini mobile app on Android. Account type and work or school administrator settings can affect access, so a sign-in failure may not be caused by the phone or its cache. If sign-in continues to fail, consult Google’s official Gemini sign-in requirements for the account you are using.

Some Gemini features may be available without signing in, depending on device and location. That does not remove the sign-in requirement for using the Gemini mobile app on Android. If you use a work or school account, the organization’s administrator settings may affect access; testing with a different eligible account can help identify whether the problem is tied to the account, but it does not explain the underlying reason.
Keep the distinction clear when describing the problem: having access to some Gemini features without signing in is not the same as being signed in to the Android mobile app. If the app asks you to sign in and will not proceed, check whether the Google Account you are using is eligible and whether administrator settings apply. A cache reset cannot establish or change those account conditions.
If another account works on the same phone, record that comparison and identify which account type was involved if you know it. Do not assume the first account is blocked or that the second account proves the app is healthy in every respect. It only shows that the behavior differed between the two account tests on that device.
Clearing cache does not delete Gemini Apps Activity
Gemini’s Android app cache is local temporary app data. Gemini Apps Activity is account-level activity managed through Google Account controls. Google’s Gemini Apps Activity help documents how to review or delete that account activity; clearing the Android cache is not a substitute for those controls and is not established as a way to erase chat history.
If your goal is to delete saved Gemini activity, use the activity controls in your Google Account rather than the Android app’s Clear cache button. Conversely, if your goal is to troubleshoot loading, deleting account activity is a different operation and is not part of the recommended cache-clearing sequence. Treat the two tasks separately: use app settings for the cache troubleshooting step, and use account activity controls for reviewing or deleting account-level activity.
This distinction also matters if you are considering Clear storage/data. The community warning says that action can reset local app state and may require signing in again. It is not a documented method for deleting account activity. Do not choose a more disruptive local reset on the assumption that it will remove history stored in your account.

When the problem persists
If Gemini still will not sign in or load after the low-risk checks, report the specific symptom through Gemini’s in-app feedback/reporting path or ask in the Google Help Community. Include whether the failure occurs in the Android app, on the web, or both; whether it affects one account or more than one; the error wording; and which steps you tried. Avoid describing a service outage as confirmed unless Google has confirmed one.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- If the failure is app-only, report that it is limited to the Android app and note whether clearing Gemini’s cache changed anything.
- If the same account fails in the app and on the web, mention that comparison and check the account’s eligibility or administrator settings.
- If another account works on the same device, report that the symptom appears account-specific; that observation helps scope the issue but does not identify its cause.
- If the problem began and ended without a settings change, report the timing rather than assuming the cache caused or resolved it.
- If only one chat fails, include the wording you see, such as “Loading chat failed,” and say whether another chat or the web version behaved differently. The message itself does not establish a specific cause.
A useful report separates what you observed from what you suspect. For example, “Gemini signs in on the web but not in the Android app” is more precise than “Gemini is down.” Mention the Google Account comparison only in general terms needed to describe the issue; the key troubleshooting detail is whether one account or multiple accounts show the same behavior. Include the sequence of checks and whether each one made a difference.
Support reports and community posts can help identify patterns in the symptoms people describe, but an individual post is not proof of a general failure or its cause. If your own issue continues, use the official feedback or community route rather than treating a similar user report as confirmation that your account or device has the same problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will clearing Gemini’s Android cache delete my chats or Gemini Apps Activity?
Clearing the app cache is different from deleting Gemini Apps Activity in your Google Account. Google’s activity controls are where you review or delete account-level activity; clearing the Android cache is not established as a way to erase chat history.
Is Clear cache the same as Clear storage or Clear data?
No. The recommended first step is specifically Clear cache. Community advice warns that clearing storage or data can reset local app state and may mean signing in again. Do not choose it as a substitute for clearing cache or as a way to delete account activity.

Should I clear the Google app cache too?
A Google Help Community Product Expert suggests it as a separate optional step. Clear Gemini’s cache and test first; if you choose to clear the Google app cache afterward, test again so you can tell whether anything changed. It is not presented as a required or guaranteed fix.
Why does Gemini still fail after I clear the cache?
Cache clearing is only one low-risk troubleshooting step and is not a guaranteed resolution. Check connectivity, updates, and whether the same account works on the web; if sign-in is the issue, check Google Account eligibility and any work or school administrator settings.
Do I need a Google Account to use the Gemini Android app?
Google’s Android Help says a Google Account is required to sign in to the Gemini mobile app on Android. Some other Gemini features may be available without sign-in depending on device and location, but that does not remove the app’s sign-in requirement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat if Gemini works on the web but not in the app?
That comparison suggests the symptom may be limited to the Android app experience, but it does not prove the cause. Try the app-specific cache step and other low-risk checks, then report that the same account works on the web but not in the app if the issue persists.
Does a “Loading chat failed” message mean Gemini is having an outage?
No specific diagnosis is established for that wording. Note whether it affects one chat or several, compare the app with the web version, and report the exact message. Do not call it a confirmed outage unless Google has confirmed one.
The Bottom Line
Start with Settings > Apps > Gemini > Storage or Storage & cache > Clear cache, then retry the same action. If it still fails, check connectivity, app updates, the web version, and Google Account eligibility—especially work or school settings. Cache clearing is not guaranteed to fix the problem, and it does not replace Google Account controls for Gemini Apps Activity. If the failure persists, report what happens in the app versus the web, which account(s) are affected, the exact message, and the steps you tried.
