You can’t manually empty a single “System Data” bucket on an iPad using a documented setting. Instead, check Settings > General > [your iPad] Storage, then remove apps or files you no longer need. iPadOS manages cached and temporary files itself and removes them when it needs space.
What “System Data” means on an iPad
Apple’s current storage guide calls the operating-system category System. Its size varies by iPad model. The separate Other category can include items such as Siri voices, fonts, dictionaries, logs and caches, Spotlight indexing, and system data used by services such as Keychain and CloudKit. The exact labels and breakdown may vary by device and software version; neither label is a reliable inventory of files you can delete individually.

Apple says iPadOS removes cached and temporary files when storage is needed. It does not document a control for purging all System or Other data on demand. Cached media may also appear as Other when the iPad is connected to a computer, and the iPad removes cached files when it needs space. Apple’s storage guide explains the categories and how the device manages them.
How to free storage safely
1. Check the storage breakdown
- Open Settings > General > [your iPad] Storage.
- Review the recommendations and the storage used by each app.
- Use the breakdown to identify large apps and files, rather than treating the System or Other figure as a list of items to delete.
Cached or temporary app data may not be included in the app’s displayed usage, so the figures are not necessarily a complete cache inventory.

2. Offload or delete apps you don’t need
In an app’s storage details, choose Offload App to free the app’s storage while keeping its documents and data. Choose Delete App to remove the app and its related data. Some apps let you remove documents or data separately. Before deleting an app, make sure important data is backed up or synced; what can be recovered depends on the app.
3. Review downloads and personal files
Look for content you recognize and no longer need, such as photos and videos, downloaded music or other media, mail attachments, Books, Messages attachments, locally downloaded iCloud Drive files, Safari downloads, and items in the Files app. Delete or move only files you want to remove from the iPad. Apple lists these among the storage categories in its storage guide.

Clear Safari history and website data only if that’s your goal
Safari cleanup is separate from clearing system storage. In the Safari instructions for iPad, open the sidebar, go to History, tap More, choose Clear, select a timeframe, and tap Clear History. This removes visited-site history, recent searches, cookies, and website permissions for location or notifications. It does not remove histories kept independently by websites or records in other apps. See Apple’s Safari instructions for iPad.

Apple also documents this route: Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. Labels and paths can vary with iPadOS version, so use the instructions matching your software. Clearing Safari data can affect site sign-ins and permissions, and it is not a way to clear other apps’ data or the entire System category. Apple’s Safari troubleshooting guide includes this option.

When a restart or update may help
Restarting is one of Apple’s Safari troubleshooting steps, and Apple notes that an iPadOS update might resolve an issue. These are reasonable steps when troubleshooting a relevant problem, but Apple does not promise that either will reduce System Data by a particular amount. Don’t treat them as guaranteed storage-purge methods.

Reset All Settings returns selected settings to their defaults; it does not delete data or media. Back up first if you need to preserve your settings. Erase All Content and Settings removes the iPad’s content. It is a last-resort troubleshooting step, not routine cache cleanup: make a backup before erasing or restoring, and proceed only if you understand what will be removed. Apple explains the distinction in its reset and erase guidance.
