The options differ between Fire OS 7 and Fire OS 8: you can archive eligible content, manage items to remove, and—for compatible tablets—add a microSD card. Start with archiving or removing downloads you can get back before deleting anything you may need locally.
Free up space from Settings
- Open Settings and select Storage.
- On Fire OS 7, under Free Up Space, select Archive Now to archive eligible unused Amazon content.
- On Fire OS 8, select Internal Storage. Choose Archive Now to archive eligible content automatically, or Free Up Space to manage eligible content manually.
The Storage activity is also the destination Amazon documents for package-storage management actions across supported Fire tablet generations. Amazon’s Fire tablet intent documentation describes that destination.

Choose what to archive or remove
Use Auto Archive for eligible apps
Amazon says Auto Archive can archive non-Amazon apps that have been infrequently used during the past 60 days. Turn it on or off at Settings > Storage > Auto Archive. Archived apps can be reinstalled from that page or from the App Store. If you uninstall an archived app from its App info page, its data is removed too. Amazon-purchased content is automatically saved to your Amazon account’s Cloud. Removing a downloaded copy from the tablet frees local space without deleting that content from your account. This makes downloaded Amazon content a useful place to start when you want space back while retaining the ability to access it through your account.

Check local-only content before deleting
Before removing an app or file, decide whether you need its local copy or data. Archiving eligible content, uninstalling an app, and deleting a downloaded file are different actions; don’t assume they have the same effect. In particular, Amazon notes that uninstalling an archived app from its App info page removes its data.
Clear an app cache carefully
There is no single universal cache-clearing path established here for every Fire tablet app. Amazon’s published procedure is specifically for Amazon Music: open the app, tap its Settings icon, open Settings, scroll to Storage, then select Clear Cache. Follow the app maker’s instructions or look in the individual app’s settings for other apps. Avoid confusing a cache control with clearing app data; the latter may affect saved settings or local content, and Amazon’s cited Music instructions do not establish that clearing data is harmless. Consider a microSD card if cleanup is not enough
Amazon says compatible Fire tablets from the 5th generation onward support microSD cards for additional content storage. When setting up a card, choose portable or internal storage based on how you intend to use it. Support, capacity, and what can be stored vary by tablet generation and Fire OS; a card does not guarantee that apps can be moved onto it.

Portable storage
Portable storage is suited to transferring files, photos, and videos. Some copyrighted app media may remain on the card and may not transfer between devices. Kindle books stored on the card can be accessed on other devices only when they use the same Amazon account. The Kindle and Prime Video apps support portable storage only.

To remove a portable card safely, use Settings > Storage. Amazon’s microSD storage guidance explains the modes and limitations.
Internal storage
Internal storage is intended to expand the tablet’s device storage and can support apps and games when the app itself supports card storage. Setting up a card in this mode formats it. Amazon warns not to remove an internal-storage card casually: data stored on a removed card can be permanently lost, and app data on it will not be available if apps are reinstalled. The card must be reformatted before it can be used with the tablet again; an internally formatted card cannot be used on another device without reformatting and losing its data.

Check generation and Fire OS before choosing a card

These are maximum-capacity figures in Amazon’s undated help guidance, not a guarantee that every card or app will work with every tablet. Amazon also says Fire OS 6 and higher cannot install apps and games to a microSD card. Check the exact model, Fire OS version, and the app’s storage support before buying a card. If the storage display seems stale or the tablet behaves intermittently after cleanup, restart it: hold the power button until the shutdown request appears, select OK, then press the power button again to turn it on. Amazon’s restart instructions.
Factory reset is not a routine storage-cleanup step. Start with the reversible storage controls and inspect the content you plan to remove; the cited Amazon instructions do not establish a reset as necessary for ordinary cleanup or specify what it removes in every configuration.
