How to Clear RAM on a Chromebook: Steps That Actually Help

There is no dedicated RAM-clear button on a Chromebook. Reduce active work, restart without restoring tabs if needed, and use Chrome Task Manager to close unnecessary activity.

Chromebooks do not have a dedicated RAM-clearing button. To ease low-memory symptoms—such as slow apps or tabs that keep refreshing—close work you do not need, restart the Chromebook, and use Chrome Task Manager to identify unnecessary activity. These steps reduce the active workload; deleting browsing data or files is not a substitute.

What “clear RAM” means on a Chromebook

RAM is working memory used by active tabs, apps, and processes. In practice, freeing it means reducing what is running or restarting to begin a fresh session. Google’s Chromebook Help recommends closing unused tabs, restarting, checking Task Manager, and turning off unneeded extensions when a Chromebook may be low on memory. Google’s troubleshooting guide connects low memory with tabs that refresh constantly.

Clear active workload in this order

  1. Close tabs you are not using

Save any work first, then close tabs you do not need. This is the quickest way to reduce the browser workload without deleting saved browser information.

  2. Restart and choose whether to restore your session

Restart the Chromebook. If ChromeOS offers to reopen the previous apps and tabs, choose No thanks to continue without restoring that workload. If sessions reopen automatically, review Settings > System preferences > Startup and set startup restoration to Off. Google documents this option in its memory troubleshooting guidance and startup settings help. A restart is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that an ongoing memory problem is fixed.

  3. Close unnecessary apps or windows in Task Manager

Press Shift + Esc to open Chrome Task Manager. Close apps, tabs, or processes you recognize as unnecessary. Avoid ending unfamiliar system processes.

  4. Turn off extensions you do not need

Review installed extensions and disable ones you do not use. If a problem began recently, test extensions deliberately and see whether the symptom changes; do not casually disable an extension you rely on.

  5. Check diagnostics and ChromeOS updates if the issue persists

Use Chromebook Diagnostics to check memory, then check for and install available ChromeOS updates. If the problem continues, Google recommends contacting the Chromebook manufacturer. See Chromebook memory troubleshooting and Google’s slow Chromebook guidance.

Use Memory Saver to manage inactive tabs

Chrome’s Memory Saver can deactivate tabs you are not currently using so active tabs have more memory available. It is an ongoing tab-management feature, not a one-time purge. Find it under Chrome Settings > Performance; labels or behavior may vary as Chrome changes.

Some activity can keep a tab active, including audio or video, screen sharing, notifications, downloads, partially completed forms, pinned tabs, and connected devices. On Chromebook, Chrome can also show tab memory use in hover cards. See Chrome’s Memory Saver help.

RAM, storage, and browsing data are different

What you notice or want to do Appropriate first move What it changes
Tabs refresh, apps slow, or memory may be low Close unused tabs and apps, restart, inspect Task Manager and extensions Active workload and processes
Old tabs and apps reopen after restart Choose No thanks, or turn off session restoration in Startup settings Whether the prior session reopens
Low disk-space warning or trouble saving downloads and apps Open Settings > System preferences > Storage management and remove unneeded local files or apps Local storage, not active RAM
You intentionally want to remove history, cookies, or cache Use Chrome > More > Delete browsing data and select categories carefully Selected browser data, not a general RAM reset

For a storage problem, Google’s storage management guidance covers freeing local space. To remove browser information, open Delete browsing data, choose a time range and the categories to delete, then confirm. Depending on your selections, this can remove history, cookies, site data, cached images and files, saved passwords, autofill entries, or site settings. Only select information you are willing to lose.

Why Powerwash is not a RAM-clearing step

Do not use Powerwash as a routine response to low memory. A factory reset erases local user data, including files in Downloads. Google advises trying other steps and backing up files before resetting. If the Chromebook is managed by a school or workplace, contact its administrator; users cannot reset a managed device themselves. See Google’s Chromebook reset guidance.
