Clearing the Google Play Store’s cache or app data does not uninstall the apps already installed on your Android device. It resets data stored by the Store app itself. Start with Clear cache; if that does not help, clearing the Store’s data can give it a fresh start, but you may need to restore Store preferences such as parental controls and password protection.
Clear the Google Play Store cache or data
Menu names vary by Android version and device maker. Google’s instructions refer to the storage screen as either Storage or Storage & cache.

- Open your device’s Settings app.
- Tap Apps. If necessary, tap See all apps.
- Select Google Play Store. Check the name carefully: do not select Google Play services.
- Tap Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache, then reopen the Play Store and retry the download or update.
- If the problem remains, return to the same screen and tap Clear data or Clear storage. Review and confirm the prompt shown on your device.
- Open the Play Store again. If prompted, agree to its Terms of Service and restore any preferences that were reset.
Google describes clearing the Store’s cache and data as a fresh start that can help fix issues, including download problems; it is not a guaranteed fix. Google’s instructions are for resetting the Store app and do not direct you to uninstall installed apps. See Google’s Play Store cache and data instructions and reinstall and re-enable apps guidance.
What clearing Play Store data changes
Clearing data resets information stored by the Google Play Store app. Google warns that Store settings such as parental controls and password protection may be deleted, so you may need to set them up again. You might also be asked to accept the Terms of Service when you next open the Store.

This is not the same as uninstalling apps from your device. The reset steps above do not remove your installed apps. If you separately uninstall a purchased app, Google says you can install it again using the same Google Account without paying again.
Do not confuse the Play Store with Google Play services
Google Play Store is the app storefront; Google Play services is a separate component. For this procedure, select Google Play Store in Settings and leave Play services alone.

Google cautions against clearing Google Play services data as an early troubleshooting step. It can remove information saved on the device and may require you to reauthenticate Google Pay payment methods or sign in to your Google Account again. Treat it as a more consequential escalation, not an extension of clearing the Store’s cache.

Try Google’s basic checks before resetting other components or changing your account:

- Check that Wi-Fi or mobile data is working.
- Check that the device has enough available storage.
- Check for Android system updates.
- Close and reopen the Play Store, then restart the device.
- Check that the device’s date and time settings are correct.
Google lists these checks in its basic troubleshooting steps for app downloads. If the issue persists, its advanced troubleshooting guidance for multiple app downloads covers further steps. Removing and re-adding a Google Account or clearing Google Play services data can have wider effects than clearing the Store cache, so follow Google’s instructions carefully before trying them.
