What to use for everyday phone cleaning
Begin with a clean, dry, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. Samsung also recommends a camera-lens cleaning cloth; Google calls for a soft, lint-free cloth. Apple’s routine method is a soft, slightly damp lint-free cloth. These are instructions for wiping the phone’s exterior, not a reason to wet the device heavily.

For stubborn grime, Samsung’s US Galaxy guidance allows a small amount of distilled water on a cloth. Never spray cleaner or water directly onto the phone. Keep moisture away from openings, and avoid excess liquid.
How the major phone makers handle disinfection
Routine wiping and disinfection are different tasks. The manufacturers do not give one universal rule for alcohol or disinfecting wipes, so match the method to your phone rather than assuming a wipe is safe for every device.

The percentages and ppm values in this table are manufacturer cleaning instructions, not general guarantees about every phone or disinfectant. In particular, Samsung’s listed solution guidance applies to glass, ceramic, and metal surfaces; it should not be extended to other materials without checking the device instructions.
A safe cleaning sequence
- Power down and unplug the phone. Remove its case, cables, and accessories before cleaning.
- Wipe away routine dirt. Use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth, gently. If you have an iPhone, Apple’s routine guidance specifies a slightly damp cloth; Samsung allows a small amount of distilled water on a cloth for stubborn grime.
- Disinfect only if needed and only by the maker’s method. Check the guidance for the exact phone and use the permitted wipe or solution on exterior surfaces. For Samsung’s listed solutions, apply the liquid carefully to the cloth, not directly to the phone.
- Keep liquid and force away from vulnerable areas. Do not let moisture enter openings, scrub roughly, or use compressed air or spray bleach on a Galaxy phone.
Why harsh cleaners and rough scrubbing are a poor default
“Harsh cleaner” is not a precise product category, and the manufacturers’ rules differ. The practical rule is to avoid unapproved household products and abrasive technique, then follow the instructions for your own device. Apple says not to use cleaning products except in line with its disinfection instructions; Google warns against harsh cleaners and rough scrubbing; Samsung warns against spray bleach and compressed air.

Samsung says general cleaners, compressed-air sprays, and bleach-based products can peel or damage the oleophobic coating on its phone displays, which helps shield the screen from fingerprint smudging. That warning is specific to Samsung’s guidance; it does not establish that every alcohol wipe damages, or preserves, every phone’s coating.

When to check the exact model instructions
Look up the maker’s cleaning guidance before using a disinfectant if your phone has a foldable display, unusual finish, or older model. A case or accessory may also have different care requirements from the phone itself. Follow any model-specific warning, such as Google’s caution about protective-film edges on Pixel Fold phones, rather than treating the phone as a generic glass slab.
