You can still clean your floors while troubleshooting a robot vacuum that will not map. First identify whether it failed to create its first map, lost a saved map, or has a map but cannot locate itself; then try one prepared, uninterrupted mapping run using the instructions for your exact model. For now, use a broom or mop on hard floors and a conventional vacuum on carpet.
Identify what “cannot map” means
These three problems have different possible causes and next steps. Before changing settings or deleting anything, work out which one describes your robot.

- The first map was never saved: The robot has not completed a mapping run that produced a usable map. Prepare the home and retry according to the model’s instructions.
- A saved map disappeared: Check the app’s map-management controls and selected floor before attempting to rebuild the map. eufy’s L70 map-loss guidance also describes floor-plan mismatch after moving the robot.
- The map exists, but the robot cannot localize: It may not be matching its current position to the saved layout. Check that the app has the right floor selected and consider whether the robot was moved or the home’s layout changed.
A layout change can make an old map a poor match for the home as it is now. Use the instructions for the exact model to restore or replace a map; do not assume every app handles map loss the same way.
Prepare for one clean mapping retry
Before starting a new map, make the route as predictable as possible. Dyson’s mapping support guidance recommends clearing obstructions and avoiding interruptions during mapping.

- Pick up loose cables, small objects, and other floor clutter.
- Remove thin rugs if they could snag or obstruct the robot.
- Open the internal doors to the rooms you want mapped.
- Move temporary furniture out of the robot’s path where practical.
- Be aware that mirrors and windows can affect navigation or map accuracy.
Then start the robot in the manner its manufacturer specifies. Requirements are model-specific: Dyson says the robot must return to its dock on its own and notes that mapping a larger home may require recharging before the run is complete. Xiaomi’s mapping FAQ says a mapping attempt may need to start close to the charging station. These are examples for the cited guidance, not universal rules for all robot vacuums.
Let the run finish without moving the robot or interrupting it unless the manual says otherwise. Dyson describes mapping with the brush bar and suction off on the models covered by its guidance; that detail should not be assumed for other models. Dyson’s advice is: “Your robot needs a complete and accurate map of your home, so if there are any problems during mapping, it’s better to start again.”

If a saved map vanished or the robot is in the wrong place
Before deleting map data, look in the app for a saved map, map-management options, and the selected floor. If the robot was carried to a different floor or the layout has changed, the current position or room arrangement may not match the stored map. eufy’s L70 guidance discusses both a map removed from the app and floor mismatch after moving the robot; follow your own model’s instructions to restore a map or create a new one.

Keep cleaning while you troubleshoot
Mapping is not a prerequisite for removing dust and debris by hand. Sweep hard floors with a broom and dustpan or clean them with an ordinary mop; a microfiber flat mop is another optional tool for hard floors, not a fix for the robot. Use a conventional vacuum for carpet if one is available.

- Whether this is the first mapping attempt, a lost saved map, or a localization problem.
- Whether the floor plan, furniture, or robot location changed recently.
- Whether the robot could reach or return to its dock during mapping.
Support procedures, app wording, and available channels vary by model and geography. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish one button combination, firmware fix, warranty remedy, or repair provider that applies across brands.
Model-specific limits to keep in mind
Xiaomi’s cited FAQ flags homes larger than 120 square metres as a possible reason a map may not build. That is Xiaomi support guidance, not a universal size limit for robot vacuums. Dyson separately notes that a larger home may require a recharge to complete mapping, without establishing a general area cutoff. Check the documentation for your own model rather than applying either statement to another brand.
