To find out whether your motherboard supports a particular M.2 SSD, look up the exact board model and revision in the manufacturer’s manual and check the specifications for the specific M.2 slot. Confirm the slot’s key, interface (PCIe/NVMe, SATA, or both), supported drive length, PCIe generation and lane configuration, and any shared-port notes. A matching notch can indicate physical fit, but it does not prove that the slot supports the drive’s protocol.
Find the exact motherboard model and revision
Start with the model name printed on the board or shown in your computer’s system information. Record the board revision too if the manufacturer publishes different documentation for different revisions. A computer maker’s model name may not be the motherboard model, so use the board’s own identity when you can.

Go to the motherboard manufacturer’s official support page for that exact model and open its specifications and manual. In the manual, use the board diagram to find each M.2 slot and note its label, such as M2_1. Use that same label when checking the storage specifications and footnotes; two slots on one board may not have the same capabilities.
Check the slot’s electrical and physical specifications
Key and interface
Look for the slot’s key designation and explicit support for PCIe/NVMe, SATA, or both. “M.2” describes a form factor and connector family, not a guarantee of one storage protocol. Keying can help identify which modules may physically fit, but it does not establish which signals the motherboard routes through that slot. For background on keys and module attributes, see Dell’s M.2 key guide; for actual support, rely on your board’s documentation.

- MEET THE NEXT GEN: Consider this a cheat code; Our Samsung 990 PRO Gen4 SSD helps you reach near max performance with lightning-fast speeds; Whether you’re a hardcore gamer or a tech guru, you’ll get power efficiency built for the final boss
- REACH THE NEXT LEVEL: Gen4 steps up with faster transfer speeds and high-performance bandwidth; With a more than 55% improvement in random performance compared to 980 PRO, it’s here for heavy computing and faster loading
- THE FASTEST SSD FROM THE WORLD'S FLASH MEMORY BRAND: The speed you need for any occasion; With read and write speeds up to 7450/6900 MB/s you’ll reach near max performance of PCIe 4.0 powering through for any use
- PLAY WITHOUT LIMITS: Give yourself some space with storage capacities from 1TB to 4TB; Sync all your saves and reign supreme in gaming, video editing, data analysis and more
- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
For example, MSI’s MPG B850M EDGE TI MAX WIFI specifications list multiple Key M slots with differing specifications and a Key E slot for a wireless module. A Key M label alone is therefore not enough to conclude that a particular SSD will work.
Drive length
M.2 size labels such as 2242 and 2280 describe a module’s dimensions: the first two digits indicate its width in millimeters and the remaining digits its length. Match the drive length to the slot’s stated support and the board’s screw or mounting positions. For instance, the ASUS PRIME B850M-K user guide specifies a 2280 device for its cited slot.

PCIe generation and lane configuration
If the slot supports PCIe/NVMe, check the listed generation and lane configuration, such as PCIe 5.0 x4. These details describe the slot’s connection, not a guarantee that every SSD will operate at its advertised maximum speed. Compare the drive’s interface and capabilities with the slot entry in the manual; compatibility comes before speed claims.

Check for shared ports and installation notes
Read the notes attached to the slot specification and the storage section of the manual. Some boards share resources between an M.2 slot and one or more SATA connectors, so installing a drive can make a particular SATA port unavailable. The affected slot or port varies by board. MSI’s hard-drive troubleshooting guidance directs users to their board documentation for supported drives and notes that M.2/SATA sharing can occur. ASRock also provides board-specific examples in its M.2 FAQ.

Use this compatibility checklist before buying
- Identify the board: record its exact model and, where relevant, revision.
- Find the slot: locate the intended M.2 slot in the manual’s board diagram and note its label.
- Match the interface: verify that the slot explicitly supports the drive’s protocol—PCIe/NVMe or SATA. Buy an M.2 NVMe SSD only if the slot documentation lists PCIe/NVMe support; choose an M.2 SATA SSD only if SATA support is explicitly listed.
- Match the physical size: check that the slot and board mounting points support the drive’s length.
- Compare the PCIe details: for an NVMe drive, check the slot’s generation and lane configuration alongside the drive’s specifications.
- Read the caveats: check whether using the slot disables or shares a SATA port or other resource, and follow any installation notes.
When comparing two candidate drives, check interface first, then supported length, PCIe generation and lane configuration, and board-specific sharing or clearance constraints. The motherboard model and the two drive models are needed to determine which specific option is compatible; no exact drive can be selected from the slot type alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the notch is not enough
The notches on M.2 modules and connectors are useful physical clues, and keying arrangements can limit which cards can be inserted. But physical fit does not tell you by itself whether a slot supports SATA, PCIe/NVMe, both, or another device type. Supermicro’s M.2 Compatibility FAQ discusses socket and key arrangements with different lane capabilities. Treat a notch as a cross-check, then confirm the electrical support in your exact motherboard manual.
