Clean up autoloaded WordPress data by measuring the total payload, identifying which options are actually used, and applying the least destructive change first. Keep values that are still needed but turn autoload off when an option is only required on limited requests; delete an option only when you have verified that its plugin, theme, or other owner is gone and you can restore the database.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
There is no universal safe byte limit. WordPress loads the combined autoloaded payload during all-options initialization, so both the amount of data and how many values are loaded matter. A large option can be legitimate configuration, while an unfamiliar name is not proof that it is stale.

What autoloaded options are and why they affect performance
WordPress stores many settings in the wp_options table. Rows marked for autoload are collected when WordPress initializes its all-options cache, making those values available without a separate lookup later in the request. That convenience is useful for settings read throughout a site, but it also means every request can carry the combined serialized payload.
WordPress core describes the risk plainly: “Autoloading too many options can lead to performance problems, especially if the options are not frequently used.” The problem is not a magic count of rows. A site with a few very large values can carry more overhead than one with many small settings, and a moderate payload can still be wasteful when the values are read only on occasional URLs.

Which settings normally belong in autoload
Options used across several frontend locations, on most requests, or during common administrative bootstrap work are typical autoload candidates. Site-wide behavior, active-theme settings, and configuration read on nearly every page may reasonably stay loaded.
Which settings are better left out
An option used only by a single administrative screen, one shortcode endpoint, a scheduled task, or a small group of URLs usually does not need to be present on every request. Turning autoload off keeps the value in the table while avoiding its inclusion in the all-options payload. The owning code can still retrieve it when needed.
Prepare a safe audit before changing anything
Treat this as a database change, not a housekeeping shortcut. A wrong deletion can remove settings that a plugin or theme expects, and a wrong autoload change can expose a bug only on a less frequently visited page.
- Create a current database backup. Store it somewhere you can access independently of the WordPress installation, and confirm that you know how to restore it. A backup that has never been tested is not a reliable rollback plan.
- Record the site context. Note the WordPress version, active theme, active plugins, recent deactivations, and whether a staging copy is available. Autoload behavior and command support depend partly on the WordPress and WP-CLI versions in use.
- Plan small batches. Change one option or a tightly related group at a time. Small batches make it possible to identify the setting that caused a regression and to compare measurements accurately.
- Choose a maintenance window for important sites. You can usually audit without downtime, but a backup restore or plugin rollback may require a controlled window.
Do not start by deleting rows whose names look old. An option name may be abbreviated, generated dynamically, or still required by an active component. Establish ownership and usage before making a destructive decision.
Measure the current autoloaded payload with WP-CLI
Run these commands from the WordPress installation, using a shell account with the permissions needed to read and update the site.
Get the total number of autoloaded bytes
wp option list --autoload=on --format=total_bytes
This gives you a baseline for the currently loaded payload. Save the output with the date and the site or environment name so that later measurements are comparable. The command’s output is a measurement, not a recommended target.

List option names and their sizes
wp option list --autoload=on --fields=option_name,size_bytes --format=csv
The CSV includes each autoloaded option name and its size. Sort the result outside WP-CLI if necessary, then inspect the largest values first. A size ranking helps you prioritize, but it does not decide whether an option is safe to change. A large value can be an intentional configuration object, a cache, or data used by an active component.
Check one option’s current autoload flag
wp option get-autoload OPTION_NAME
Replace OPTION_NAME with the exact name from the listing. Check the value rather than assuming that a report labeled “autoloaded” reflects only one historical literal. Newer WordPress APIs use boolean autoload decisions, while legacy yes and no values are documented as deprecated for those APIs. Use the behavior supported by the site’s WordPress and WP-CLI versions.
Identify the owner and real usage of each large option
Before changing a candidate, answer four questions: who created it, whether that owner is still present, where the value is read, and whether the value is configuration or disposable data.
Map the option to a plugin, theme, or core
- Search the active plugin and theme code for the exact option name and for the APIs that read or update it.
- Review the component’s settings and uninstall documentation. A supported uninstall routine may clean up more safely than a manual delete.
- Check recently removed plugins and themes. A former owner is a lead for investigation, not proof that the row is abandoned.
- Look for WordPress core ownership before touching settings related to site identity, URLs, cron behavior, users, or other foundational functions.
Observe when the setting is needed
Trace the code path or use a staging copy to exercise representative frontend and administrator pages. Ask whether the option is read during nearly every request or only for a particular screen, template, endpoint, or scheduled operation. If the value is only needed in a narrow path, retaining it with autoload disabled is often safer than deleting it.

Distinguish configuration from cache data
Some large values are caches that can be regenerated; others contain settings that would be expensive or impossible to reconstruct. Do not infer the difference from size alone. Read the owning code and documentation, and verify what happens after a cache is cleared or a setting is re-saved.
Choose the least destructive cleanup
Use the following decision order. Preserve data whenever you can, and escalate to deletion only after ownership and recovery have been established.

| Situation | Preferred action | What changes | Rollback path |
|---|---|---|---|
| The value is still needed but only on limited requests | Turn autoload off | The option value remains; its autoload flag changes | Restore the previous flag or restore the backup |
| An active plugin or theme owns the value | Use that software’s settings, update, or uninstall routine | The owner controls the schema and cleanup behavior | Use the owner’s rollback or restore the backup |
| The former owner is removed and the row is confirmed leftover | Delete the specific option after a backup | The row and its stored value are removed | Restore the database backup |
| The option is a core or site-identity setting | Leave it alone unless official owner documentation directs a change | No manual change | No cleanup rollback is needed |
Turn autoload off while keeping the value
WordPress provides the wp_set_option_autoload_values() API for changing autoload flags without changing option values. WP-CLI exposes the equivalent update operation:
wp option update OPTION_NAME --autoload=off
Use the exact option name and verify the command’s result. This is the usual first choice when a setting remains part of a plugin or theme’s configuration but is not needed on most requests. It is reversible, provided you record the original state and retain your backup.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Let an active owner manage its own setting
If the option belongs to software that is still active, prefer that software’s documented setting, update process, or uninstall routine. A plugin may store a serialized structure whose internal format changes between releases; hand-editing or deleting it can leave the component in an invalid state even when the site appears normal immediately afterward.
Delete only a verified orphan
Deletion is appropriate only when you have confirmed that the original owner has been removed, no active code reads the option, and the backup is restorable. WP-CLI can delete a named option:
wp option delete OPTION_NAME
Adapt any listing-and-delete workflow narrowly to the exact names you verified. Do not use a broad wildcard or a blanket pattern simply because several names share a prefix. Keep a record of every deleted name and the date, so a future investigation can connect a regression to the change.
Do not “clean” core identity settings by appearance
Options that define the site’s identity or core behavior can look small or unfamiliar but still be essential. Leave them in place unless the owning WordPress documentation or the responsible component explicitly instructs you to change them.

A practical, repeatable cleanup workflow
- Back up and verify the restore path. Do this before every maintenance session, especially on a production site.
- Measure the baseline. Run
wp option list --autoload=on --format=total_bytesand save the value. - Export the candidate list. Run
wp option list --autoload=on --fields=option_name,size_bytes --format=csv, then sort bysize_bytesso the largest rows receive attention first. - Inspect each candidate’s flag. Use
wp option get-autoload OPTION_NAMEand record whether the current command reports a boolean-style or legacy value. - Establish ownership. Match the name to active code, a theme, WordPress core, or a removed component. Read the owner’s documentation before editing its data.
- Classify usage. Decide whether the value is read on most requests, only on limited URLs, only in administration, during scheduled work, or not at all.
- Apply the smallest change. For a still-needed, narrowly used value, run
wp option update OPTION_NAME --autoload=off. For an active owner, use its supported controls. Delete only a confirmed orphan withwp option delete OPTION_NAME. - Re-measure immediately. Rerun the total-bytes command and the largest-option report. Confirm that the expected option changed and that no unrelated rows changed.
- Exercise the site. Visit representative frontend templates, login and administrator screens, forms, checkout or publishing flows where relevant, and any endpoint known to use the option.
- Inspect logs and owner behavior. Watch PHP and application logs for notices, fatal errors, missing settings, or repeated regeneration. Confirm that the plugin or theme still reads and saves its configuration.
- Refresh relevant caches. Clear the object and page caches that could preserve the old option set, then repeat measurements so the result reflects the new state.
- Document the change. Record the option name, previous and new autoload states, command used, owner, reason, measurement before and after, and the recovery step.
How to interpret the numbers
The total-bytes command is useful for trend tracking, not for passing or failing a universal limit. Authoritative guidance does not establish one safe autoload-byte threshold or a published benchmark that applies to every WordPress site. Hosting resources, traffic patterns, object caching, PHP versions, and the way plugins read their settings all affect the outcome.
WP-CLI documentation shows 33198 bytes in an illustrative sample output. That number describes the example site used in the documentation; it is not a recommended target for your installation. Use your own baseline and look for a meaningful reduction in data that is loaded unnecessarily, followed by stable behavior on the pages that need the settings.
Track both payload and composition. A reduction in bytes can be useful, but moving one setting out of autoload may not help if another component continually adds a larger value. Conversely, a row-count increase may be harmless when the added values are small and genuinely used on common requests.
WordPress version and value-format cautions
Boolean decisions and legacy literals
WordPress core now accepts boolean autoload decisions through newer APIs and documents legacy yes and no values as deprecated for those APIs. Do not build an audit that recognizes only one literal without checking the WordPress version and the current command behavior. An audit should identify which rows are currently loaded according to the site’s running software, then use the supported API or WP-CLI syntax to change them.

WordPress has also added dynamic handling that can disable autoload for excessively large values when options are added or updated. As a result, a newly saved option may not retain the autoload behavior you expected. Check the actual flag after an update instead of assuming that the write operation preserved the old state. Do not force autoload back on merely to make a report look consistent; first determine whether the value is appropriate for every request.
Performance Lab for deeper audits
The WordPress Performance Team recommends the Performance Lab plugin when a deeper audit of large autoloaded options is needed. Treat its findings as an aid to investigation: ownership, usage, and a tested rollback still determine whether a row should be changed.

Troubleshooting after a change
A plugin reports a missing setting
First identify whether you changed only the autoload flag or deleted the row. If the value still exists, reverse the autoload change and retest. If the row was deleted, restore the backup or use the plugin’s documented settings and import process rather than inventing a replacement serialized value.
A frontend page breaks but the administration area works
Revisit the usage classification. The option may be read only by a template, shortcode, REST endpoint, or conditional feature that your initial test did not exercise. Restore the previous flag, clear relevant caches, and test the exact URL or feature before attempting another change.

The total-byte number does not fall
Confirm that the option was actually autoloaded before the change, that the command ran against the intended WordPress installation, and that the report was rerun after caches were refreshed. Another large option may have been added or updated between measurements. Compare the full CSV, not just the total.
Several options have an unfamiliar prefix
Do not delete the group by prefix alone. Search active code and the history of installed software, identify each owner, and handle names individually. A shared prefix can cover both disposable cache entries and essential configuration.
A value is large but clearly active
Size is a prioritization signal, not a deletion rule. Check whether the value is read on most requests. If it is broadly needed, leave it autoloaded unless the owner provides a safer design. If it is active but limited to a few paths, turn autoload off while retaining the value and test those paths directly.
The site cannot be restored from the backup
Stop further cleanup and resolve the restore procedure before making additional changes. Use a tested backup process for future maintenance; a backup that cannot be restored does not provide meaningful protection against an incorrect option edit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChecks to perform after every cleanup batch
- The total autoloaded byte count was recorded before and after.
- The largest-option report was regenerated and reviewed.
- Each changed option has a documented owner and usage reason.
- Any retained value still exists and its new flag is confirmed.
- Representative frontend pages and administrator screens load normally.
- Relevant logs contain no new errors or missing-setting notices.
- Object and page caches were refreshed before judging the result.
- The backup, commands, option names, and rollback decision are recorded.
What a successful cleanup looks like
A successful cleanup is not the one that produces the smallest possible table or the fewest autoloaded rows. It is a measured change that removes unnecessary per-request work while preserving settings that active code needs. The safest sequence is to identify the largest values, verify their owners, turn autoload off for narrowly used values, rely on supported uninstall routines for active software, and delete only confirmed leftovers. Re-measure and exercise the site after each small batch so that performance work does not become a configuration outage.
