Clean up a Docker Compose stack by making its project scope explicit, keeping optional services out of the default run, and separating routine container cleanup from data deletion. These seven techniques help simplify a growing Compose project and make day-to-day changes safer. Compose features can vary by installed version; Compose Watch’s Develop specification, for example, is available from Compose 2.22.0.
1. Give each stack a deliberate project name
Compose uses a project name to group and identify the resources associated with an application. A consistent name makes a stack easier to recognize and helps ensure commands target the intended project.

docker compose -p myapp-dev downThe project-name precedence is -p, the COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAME environment variable, the top-level name field, and then a name derived from the project directory. Choose one naming approach and use it consistently for status checks, updates, and cleanup. See Docker’s Compose CLI reference.

Debug tools, test runners, and administrative utilities do not always belong in the default stack. Assign them a profile so services without a profile remain enabled by default, while profiled services start only when their profile is activated.

profiles: [debug]Start the regular services with docker compose up, or activate the optional service with docker compose --profile debug up. Explicitly targeting a profiled service also activates that service for the command. Consult Docker’s guides to profiles and using profiles with Compose.
3. Split a growing Compose configuration
When one Compose file becomes hard to maintain, separate infrastructure or environment-specific settings. Compose supports including another file and merging multiple files in order.
Use include for a separate configuration
An include entry can bring a separate Compose configuration into the project, which is useful for keeping a component such as infrastructure distinct. Docker’s Compose Quickstart demonstrates this approach.

Pass multiple files with -f; Compose merges them in order, with later files able to add to or override earlier values:
docker compose -f compose.yaml -f compose.dev.yaml upWith -f, relative paths are resolved from the first Compose file unless you change the base with --project-directory. This matters for build contexts, bind mounts, and other paths when an override file lives elsewhere. See Docker’s multiple Compose files documentation.

4. Use Compose Watch for the development loop
Compose Watch can respond to file changes during development. Start it with docker compose up --watch or run docker compose watch for an existing development workflow.
- Sync files into a running service when the changed files can be copied in without rebuilding the image.
- Rebuild when a change affects dependencies or other image contents that need to be incorporated into a new image.
Watch rules and actions are part of the optional Develop specification, available from Compose 2.22.0. Check the installed Compose version and supported actions before adopting the configuration. Docker documents the Develop specification, the watch command, and the file-watch workflow.
5. Express readiness with health checks
A container being started does not necessarily mean its application is ready for another service to use. Define a health check for the dependency and make the dependent service wait for a healthy state with depends_on and condition: service_healthy.

condition: service_healthyThe check should reflect the service’s actual readiness signal; a process existing is not always enough. Docker’s Quickstart shows the health-check and dependency-condition pattern.

Compose secrets are mounted as files for services that are explicitly granted access. Inside a Linux container, a service reads an authorized secret at /run/secrets/<secret_name>. This lets the configuration limit which services receive each secret and avoids placing the secret value directly in the Compose file.

This file-mount mechanism does not by itself establish an encrypted secrets vault, and an application must support reading the secret from a file. Docker documents the behavior and Linux-container scope in its Compose secrets guide.

7. Remove stale containers without deleting stored data
When service definitions change, old containers that no longer correspond to declared services may remain as orphans. The COMPOSE_REMOVE_ORPHANS setting can enable automatic orphan removal for a command or environment; it is disabled by default. Review the project scope before enabling automatic removal.
For a deliberate cleanup, inspect the intended project and bring it down by name:
docker compose -p myapp-dev ps --all
docker compose -p myapp-dev downOrdinary docker compose down removes the project’s containers and networks, while named volumes persist by default. To remove named-volume data as well, use --volumes only when permanent deletion is intended:
