What you need—and when to clean
Cleaning is not a routine maintenance requirement. If the gold contacts look clean, focus on reseating the DIMM and confirming the correct slot rather than wiping it unnecessarily.

- Canned compressed air for loose debris.
- A cotton swab and high-percentage isopropyl alcohol for residue that remains.
- A grounded antistatic wrist strap, if available; touching unpainted grounded metal is an alternative for reducing electrostatic-discharge risk.
These are task-specific supplies, not required purchases. Corsair’s DRAM pin-cleaning guidance recommends air for loose dirt and a lightly moistened swab for remaining dirt. Kingston’s desktop memory installation guidance advises grounding yourself before handling a module.

- Shut down and unplug. Turn off the PC, disconnect its AC power cord, and remove the case panel according to the case maker’s instructions. Do not handle a DIMM while the desktop is connected to AC power.
- Reduce ESD risk. Before touching the memory, touch unpainted grounded metal or put on a grounded antistatic wrist strap. Kingston’s desktop installation guidance says to touch grounded, unpainted metal or use a grounded strap before handling DIMMs.
- Handle by the edges. Hold the module at the upper corners of its PCB. Avoid touching the gold contacts or pressing on the memory chips.
Remove the DIMM without forcing the latches
Find the module you need to inspect. Gently release the retaining tabs at the ends of the slot; the number and design of latches vary by motherboard. Lift the DIMM straight out by its edges once the tabs release. If a tab resists, stop and check the motherboard manual rather than levering or pulling hard. Excessive force can damage a latch, as cautioned in Supermicro’s model-specific DIMM installation instructions.

Clean the contacts only if needed
- Remove loose debris. Hold a can of compressed air upright and direct short bursts toward the contacts. Corsair warns that tilting the can can release liquid and damage the module. Use canned air—not high-pressure shop air.
- Wipe remaining residue gently. If visible dirt remains, lightly moisten a cotton swab with high-percentage isopropyl alcohol and gently wipe the contacts. Keep the swab only slightly damp; do not saturate it, scrub hard, or apply liquid to the motherboard slot.
- Let the module dry completely. Do not reinstall it while damp. Corsair does not specify a drying time, so wait until no moisture remains rather than relying on a fixed number of minutes.
Do not use an eraser or abrasive material: the cited manufacturer guidance does not recommend them, and aggressive rubbing is unnecessary. Corsair’s cleaning instructions were updated on April 25, 2024: Best practice for cleaning DRAM module pins.
Reseat the module in the correct slot
- Check the motherboard manual. Use its recommended slot arrangement, especially if installing a pair of DIMMs. Slot order and population rules differ across boards.
- Align the notch. Match the notch in the DIMM’s contacts to the key in the slot. The module should line up in only the correct orientation; do not force it if the notch and key do not match.
- Press evenly. Set the module straight into the slot and press down evenly at both ends until the retaining clips lock into place. The exact latch motion depends on the motherboard design.
- Close the case before restoring power. Reconnect the power cord only after the DIMM is installed and the case is closed.
Kingston’s desktop installation guide illustrates the handling and installation sequence; your motherboard’s manual takes precedence for its slot layout and latch design.

If the PC still does not recognize the memory
A cleaning and reseat do not establish that a DIMM is healthy or guarantee that detection will return. Check the likely installation causes first:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm that the DIMM is compatible with the motherboard and system.
- Verify that both ends are fully seated and the retaining clips have locked.
- Check the motherboard’s prescribed slot population, particularly for a two-module configuration.
If those checks do not resolve the problem, consult the memory vendor or system support. Kingston’s desktop and notebook memory support page provides recognition troubleshooting and advises contacting Kingston support if its initial steps do not resolve the issue. A faulty module, slot, compatibility problem, or another system fault may require separate diagnosis.
