To choose compatible DDR4 RAM, check the exact model of both your motherboard and CPU, then match a kit to their documented memory type, capacity, slot layout, data rate and any ECC requirements. Use the motherboard manual and memory QVL to verify the kit’s part number and intended slot configuration. A kit’s advertised XMP speed is a profile setting, not a guarantee that it will run at that rate on every system.
Start with the exact motherboard and CPU
Compatibility depends on both parts: the processor’s memory controller and the motherboard’s design and population rules. Find the full CPU model and the motherboard model and revision before comparing kits. Motherboards that look similar may support different memory generations, and DDR4 and DDR5 are physically keyed and electrically distinct. The board must specifically be the DDR4 version.

Intel recommends checking the processor specifications and the motherboard manual or manufacturer for a particular memory brand and model. Its guidance is direct: “To ensure that a certain brand and model of memory will work on a particular motherboard, check the motherboard’s manual, or contact your motherboard vendor for support.” See Intel’s guidance on processor memory specifications.

CPU specifications
Look up the exact CPU on its manufacturer’s specification page. Confirm that it supports DDR4 and note its maximum memory capacity, channel configuration and supported memory rates. Those values are specific to the processor model; there is no universal DDR4 capacity or speed that applies to every CPU.
#1 Best Overall
- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
Motherboard manual and QVL
In the manual for the exact board revision, check the DIMM form factor, supported module types, number of slots, total capacity and recommended slots for one or more modules. The board’s memory QVL (qualified vendor list) identifies specific memory part numbers and configurations the manufacturer tested. Search for the kit’s complete part number and check whether the listed configuration matches how you plan to populate the slots. A kit absent from the QVL is not thereby proven incompatible, but it lacks that particular evidence of testing.
Board guidance can also specify supported speeds according to the number of DIMMs per channel or the modules’ ranks. Check the manual and QVL for those details rather than assuming a kit’s advertised rate applies to every slot population.
Rank #2
- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL RipjawsV Series DDR4 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F4-3200C16D-16GVKB
- Non-ECC, DDR4 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and Intel XMP memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
Match the memory type and configuration
Before buying, check the kit’s label or manufacturer specifications for its form factor and module type. For a typical desktop, that often means looking specifically for DDR4 UDIMMs—but use the motherboard manual to establish what your system requires. Do not assume that two modules are interchangeable just because both are described as DDR4.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Capacity: Keep the kit’s total capacity within the limits of both the CPU and motherboard.
- Module count and slots: Follow the board’s recommended slots and supported population rules. A matched kit with the intended number of modules is easier to check against the documentation than a collection of unrelated sticks.
- Ranks and DIMMs per channel: These can affect the memory rate supported in a given configuration; consult the board’s population guidance.
- ECC and buffering: If ECC matters, verify support on both the CPU and motherboard. Confirm whether the platform requires ECC or non-ECC, registered or unbuffered memory, and do not mix module types.
Understand advertised speed and XMP
Compare the kit’s advertised rate with the standard rates documented for the CPU and the board, taking the planned capacity, ranks and slot population into account. A higher number on the kit’s box does not establish that the system will operate at that rate in every configuration.

Intel XMP profiles store preset memory settings that can be loaded on compatible DDR4 memory. Intel describes XMP as overclocking; using a profile depends on motherboard BIOS support and system stability, and Intel notes warranty and stability considerations. The profile may need to be enabled in BIOS or a motherboard vendor’s tuning utility. Check the board’s current documentation and do not treat the profile’s rated speed as a guaranteed default operating speed. See Intel’s XMP overview.
Use this compatibility checklist before buying
- Record the exact CPU model and motherboard model and revision.
- Confirm in the CPU specifications that it supports DDR4; note its capacity, channels and supported rates.
- Open the manual for the exact motherboard revision. Confirm DIMM type, module support, slot count, capacity and recommended slots for your intended module count.
- Search the motherboard QVL for the kit’s exact part number and check that the listed slot configuration matches yours.
- Verify the kit’s capacity, UDIMM or other form, ECC status and buffered or unbuffered type against both CPU and board requirements.
- Check how module ranks and DIMMs per channel affect supported speed for your planned configuration.
- If you intend to use XMP, confirm that the board supports the profile and that you can enable it in BIOS or the vendor’s utility; regard the result as a profile-dependent setting rather than a promise.
How to choose between otherwise compatible kits
Compare kits on the details that determine whether they fit your system: exact QVL part-number and configuration support, total capacity, module count and slot placement, standard supported speed, and whether the desired XMP profile is available. Prefer a configuration documented for your board and CPU over a higher advertised rate that exceeds the limits for your planned population. Without the exact CPU and motherboard models, it is not possible to name one best kit or speed.
