To clean Nike sneakers safely, first identify the upper material. Brush off loose dirt, then use a mild soapy solution and gentle brushing only on materials suited to damp cleaning; keep suede cleaning mostly dry. Wipe away residue and air-dry at room temperature. Nike does not recommend putting shoes in a washing machine.
What you need before you start
- A soft-bristle shoe brush or clean toothbrush for removing loose dirt and gently working on suitable materials.
- A clean cloth, preferably microfiber, for wiping away soap or residue.
- Mild soap and water for leather, knit, Flyknit or mesh when appropriate; avoid bleach and harsh cleaners.
- For suede, use a suede brush and suede rubber or pencil eraser instead of starting with soap and water.
Nike’s shoe-cleaning guide gives material-specific instructions rather than a model-by-model cleaning database. If a shoe combines materials, clean each panel using the gentlest method suited to that material.

How to clean Nike sneakers step by step
- Check the upper material. Look for leather, suede, knit, Flyknit or mesh panels so you can choose a compatible method.
- Remove loose dirt while dry. Brush gently with a soft shoe brush or toothbrush. This helps avoid working grit farther into the material. If you are unsure how a finish will respond, use light pressure and try the technique on a discreet area first.
- Clean according to the material. Use the instructions below rather than applying one wet-cleaning method to the whole shoe.
- Wipe away residue. For materials cleaned with soapy water, use a clean cloth to remove the soap.
- Air-dry. Leave the shoes at room temperature. Do not use a clothes dryer or other high heat; Nike warns that excess heat can damage or deform shoes. The cited Nike guidance does not specify a fixed drying time.
Choose the right method for each material
Leather
Start with a dry brush to remove surface dirt. Then use a mild dish-soap solution and gentle brushing. Avoid scrubbing hard, which can damage the leather. Nike also mentions a household cleaning eraser or leather conditioner as possible aids for stains; use them cautiously and follow the product directions.

Suede
Keep the initial cleaning dry. Brush away debris with a suede brush or toothbrush, following the nap, then use a suede rubber or pencil eraser for surface marks. Let wet mud or moisture dry before brushing. Nike describes white vinegar, rubbing alcohol or suede cleaner as selected spot-treatment options for stubborn stains, not as universal cleaners. Test cautiously and avoid soaking the shoe.

Do not wash suede with soap and water or put it in a washer. Nike cautions that water can set stains in suede. Its suede-cleaning guide covers these dry-cleaning steps and spot-treatment options.
Knit, Flyknit and mesh
Use mild soapy water and a soft brush, working gently in the direction of the knit. Wipe away soap with a clean cloth and let the shoes air-dry. Avoid bleach and harsh cleaning products, which Nike warns can damage these materials.

Should you put Nike sneakers in the washing machine?
No. Nike says, “Nike does not recommend washing shoes in the washing machine.” Machine washing can damage delicate materials, while dryer heat can deform or damage shoes; bulky sneakers can also pose a risk to the washing machine. Follow Nike’s washer and drying guidance and clean by hand instead.

Common mistakes that can damage sneakers
- Using one wet-cleaning method on every material: suede needs a largely dry approach, unlike knit or mesh cleaned with mild soapy water.
- Scrubbing aggressively: hard scrubbing can damage leather and may be too rough for delicate uppers.
- Using bleach or harsh cleaners: these can damage knit and mesh, and a strong cleaner is not suitable for every shoe material.
- Applying dryer heat: excess heat can damage or deform shoes.
- Brushing wet mud into suede: let the mud dry first, then brush it away.
