Before you start: protect your files and confirm activation
Microsoft describes a clean installation as an advanced way to start fresh. It is not an in-place repair: the process removes files, apps, and settings. Copy anything you want to keep to separate storage, then open important files from that backup to verify they are usable. Do not begin until the backup is complete. Microsoft’s reinstall guidance explains the clean-install process and its consequences.

Check the Windows edition and license
On the existing PC, find the edition at Settings > System > About, under Windows specifications. Install that same edition so it matches the device’s license. Before starting, confirm that you have a product key or that the digital license is linked to your Microsoft account or embedded in the device firmware. If Setup offers I don’t have a product key, Microsoft allows that route when the correct edition can be selected and the license will be applied through the account or firmware. If you have neither a product key nor a linked key, stop rather than proceeding without an established activation route. Microsoft’s instructions cover the key prompt and edition choice.

You need a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of space. Creating installation media erases the drive, so move any files on it elsewhere first. If the target PC cannot boot and you need to create the installer, use a second working PC. Download Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool from the Windows 11 download page.

Create the installation media and install Windows 11
- On the Windows 11 download page, choose Create Windows 11 Installation Media, download the Media Creation Tool, and follow its prompts to make the USB installer.
- Connect the USB drive to the target PC and start the computer from it. The boot-menu key and startup procedure differ by manufacturer and model. If Setup does not appear, consult the PC maker’s instructions for selecting USB boot or changing the boot order.
- In Windows Setup, choose the language and keyboard preferences, select Install Windows 11, and acknowledge the notice that the installation removes data.
- Select the Windows edition that matches the device’s license. At a product-key prompt, choose I don’t have a product key only if the correct edition can be installed and activation is expected through the linked digital license or firmware key. If neither that route nor a product key is available, do not continue.
- Allow Setup to complete; the PC will restart during installation. Finish the initial Windows setup, and connect to the internet when available so Windows Update can check for updates. The exact first-run prompts can vary across PC makers.
Install drivers after Windows starts
Start with Windows Update. Windows 11 can automatically install recommended drivers, while optional driver updates require you to choose them.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install the available updates and restart if Windows requests it.
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Review the driver updates listed there, select those that apply, and download and install them. Optional drivers are not installed automatically; restart after installing driver updates.
- If a device is missing or still does not work, identify the exact PC model or component and visit its manufacturer’s official support site. Choose a driver listed as compatible with your Windows 11 system. Microsoft advises against downloading drivers from other websites. Storage-controller or network drivers can be hardware-specific, so use the support page for the exact model rather than guessing.
Install a driver package you already downloaded
If you have the correct package saved locally, you can install a driver through Device Manager by browsing to the folder containing the driver files. Make sure the package is intended for the specific device and Windows 11 before applying it.
Don’t judge a driver by its version number alone
Windows Update uses provider targeting information to determine which driver is appropriate for a device. Driver titles and version-number schemes vary by provider, so a higher-looking version number is not, by itself, proof that a package is suitable. Microsoft’s driver-update guidance, published October 20, 2025, lists applicability for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2: Manage driver updates in Windows.

Choose Microsoft installation media or OEM recovery
Use Microsoft’s generic installation media when you want a fresh, standard Windows installation. Use the PC maker’s recovery image when you want to return to the manufacturer’s factory configuration and its bundled software. The recovery image may include hardware-specific drivers, factory apps, and customizations that generic media does not include. Whether recovery media is available depends on the manufacturer and exact PC model.

Microsoft’s clean-install instructions describe the removal of files, apps, and settings; the manufacturer recovery option is the alternative when its original software and setup are important.
