Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou cannot have both outcomes completely. NVIDIA’s clean-install option resets NVIDIA settings to their defaults and removes created profiles. If preserving your configuration is the priority, install the newer driver over the existing one instead. If a true clean install is necessary, back up the profile and custom-resolution files that NVIDIA supports, record anything else you rely on, and plan to re-enter settings after installation.
The key trade-off: clean reset or retained configuration
“Clean install” is often used to mean “install the driver from scratch,” but NVIDIA’s installer gives that phrase a specific consequence. In NVIDIA’s installation guidance, selecting Perform a clean installation “restores all NVIDIA settings to the default value and removes any profiles you have created.” That wording comes from an older Windows installation guide, so it should be read as the documented behavior of that installer option rather than a promise about every future installer interface. You can read the guide at NVIDIA’s installation documentation.

NVIDIA’s current driver FAQ takes the opposite approach when settings retention matters: you do not need to uninstall the old driver first, and the recommended method is to install the newer driver over it. NVIDIA states, “Today the recommended method is to overinstall the newer driver on top of your older driver.” That is an update or overinstall, not a clean install, but it is the documented path for retaining current Control Panel settings or profiles. See the NVIDIA Driver FAQ.
| Installer choice | Settings consequence | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Install the newer driver over the existing driver | NVIDIA says this retains current Control Panel settings or profiles. | Anyone whose main goal is keeping an existing configuration. |
| Select Perform a clean installation | NVIDIA’s installation guide says settings return to defaults and created profiles are removed. | Anyone who specifically needs a reset and accepts manual reconfiguration. |
The practical answer is therefore conditional: use an overinstall when preserving settings is more important than resetting the installation. Use a clean install only when the reset itself is the reason for reinstalling. A saved profile and an exported custom-resolution file can reduce the work afterward, but they are not a guaranteed backup of every NVIDIA setting.

What “clean” does and does not remove
The clean option concerns NVIDIA’s driver installation and its stored configuration. It is not a general Windows reset, and it does not make a promise that every component of a PC will be removed or reinstalled. Its documented settings effect is the important part for this decision: NVIDIA options go back to defaults and profiles created in the Control Panel are removed.
That is why uninstalling the old driver manually before running the new package is usually unnecessary. NVIDIA’s FAQ says users do not need to uninstall the older driver first. Removing it yourself adds another step without changing the central choice between an overinstall and the installer’s clean-install option. If a troubleshooting procedure specifically requires another removal method, follow that procedure, but do not treat pre-uninstall as the normal way to preserve settings.
The installer’s wording and layout can change between driver packages. Look for the installation-type screen and read the checkbox carefully. The decisive action is whether Perform a clean installation is selected, not whether a screen happens to be labeled “advanced” or “custom” in exactly the same place as an older guide.
What to prepare before changing the driver
Download the correct package first
Obtain the NVIDIA driver that matches your graphics processor and operating system before starting the installation. Do not rely on a particular “latest” version in a static guide; NVIDIA’s available package changes over time. Keep the downloaded installer accessible even if you intend to use the overinstall method.
Confirm the GPU and Windows edition shown on the download page before launching the file. A package intended for a different product family or operating system is not a substitute for the matching driver. If more than one NVIDIA package is offered for your hardware, choose the package appropriate to the use case shown by NVIDIA rather than assuming that every package has identical features.
Record settings that matter to you
Make a written list or screenshots of important global and per-application settings before either installation path. Include the options you would notice immediately if they reverted: display mode, refresh rate, scaling, application-specific 3D options, power or performance preferences, and any unusual overrides. This is practical protection rather than a documented universal NVIDIA backup feature; the official material does not promise a complete export of every setting.
Capture the settings for every display and for the applications that have their own overrides. A global setting can look correct while a game or creative application still has a different program profile. Screenshots also preserve values that might not appear in a profile file or that may be presented under a different interface after the driver update.

Save a Control Panel profile when the menu exists
NVIDIA Control Panel can save a desktop profile to an .nvp file and load a previously saved profile. In Control Panel, open the Profiles menu and choose the save command, then place the resulting file somewhere outside any directory you plan to remove. NVIDIA documents the save and load functions in its Control Panel Quick Start Guide.
The profile is a useful fallback, not proof that every driver setting will survive a clean installation. Save it anyway if the Profiles menu is available, but keep your screenshots or written notes for settings that are not represented in the file or that fail to load after the reinstall. If the menu is absent, do not spend time searching for a hidden universal export; use the manual record instead.
Export custom resolutions separately
Custom resolutions follow a separate export procedure. In NVIDIA Control Panel, go to Display > Change resolution, select the relevant display, choose Customize, and use the file icon beside the custom resolution to export the settings as an XML file. Store that XML with the .nvp profile and your notes. NVIDIA’s documented procedure is available at To export a custom resolution you created.
Export each display’s custom-resolution configuration you care about. The XML is a separate artifact; saving an NVIDIA profile does not establish that custom resolutions are included. Keep the file in a location that will not be deleted during cleanup, such as a separate drive or a normal documents folder.
A short pre-install checklist
- Confirm the GPU and operating-system match for the downloaded installer.
- Close games, editors, virtual machines, and other programs using the GPU.
- Save the
.nvpprofile if the Profiles menu is present. - Export every custom resolution you need, selecting the correct display each time.
- Capture global and per-application values that you cannot afford to lose.
- Decide explicitly whether retention or a reset is the priority before clicking through the installer.
This order prevents the most common mistake: selecting the clean option first and discovering afterward that the only copy of a custom resolution or unusual application override was stored in the configuration being reset.
Option 1: install the new driver without discarding settings
Choose this route when your priority is preserving the current configuration. It follows NVIDIA’s recommended overinstall method and avoids selecting the reset option.
- Close applications that use the GPU. Save work in games, creative applications, virtual machines, or other GPU-intensive software before launching the installer.
- Run the NVIDIA driver installer you downloaded for your GPU and operating system.
- Use the normal installation path. Do not select Perform a clean installation. The exact screen layout can vary by driver package, but the important decision is leaving that reset option unselected.
- Allow the installer to complete. The display may flicker or go blank briefly while the driver is replaced. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Verify the result. Open NVIDIA Control Panel and check the settings that matter to you. To identify the installed driver version, use Help > System Information in NVIDIA Control Panel, or check the graphics device in Windows Device Manager. NVIDIA lists both version-checking routes in its driver FAQ.
This method is still an installation over an existing driver. It is not a clean reset, so it does not satisfy a requirement to remove profiles or return NVIDIA options to defaults.

After the restart, test a representative game or application before changing anything else. If the issue that prompted the update remains, you will know that the overinstall preserved the configuration but did not resolve the underlying problem. You can then decide whether a later clean installation is justified, using the backup steps above.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Option 2: perform a true clean installation
Use this route only when you have a specific reason to reset the NVIDIA installation and are willing to restore settings manually. A clean install can be appropriate when you are deliberately starting from defaults, but it conflicts with the promise of retaining the existing configuration.
- Complete the preparation steps. Save an
.nvpprofile if the Profiles menu is available, export custom resolutions to XML, and finish your written checklist or screenshots. - Run the matching NVIDIA driver installer.
- Choose Custom (Advanced) when the installer presents the installation-type choices.
- Select Perform a clean installation. Proceed only after acknowledging that NVIDIA settings will return to defaults and created profiles will be removed, as described in NVIDIA’s installation guide.
- Finish the installation and restart if prompted. Do not judge the result until Windows has loaded the new driver and the display is operating normally.
- Open the available NVIDIA settings interface. Load the saved profile or re-enter settings from your notes where the relevant controls are present. Recreate or import the custom-resolution XML through the available display controls; if a particular control does not offer a load option, enter that value manually.
- Check the driver version and essential display behavior. Use NVIDIA Control Panel’s Help > System Information or Windows Device Manager, then test the applications and displays that motivated the reinstall.
The profile and XML files reduce repetitive work, but neither is documented as a complete migration package. Expect to review every important global and per-application option after the clean install.
Restoring settings after the reset
Load the saved profile where supported
Open NVIDIA Control Panel and use its Profiles menu to load the saved .nvp file. The profile feature is documented as a save/load mechanism; it does not guarantee that options introduced by a newer driver, options tied to a particular display, or settings outside the profile are restored exactly as before.
Reapply display and application settings
Compare the post-install interface with your checklist. Re-enter global options first, then inspect per-application overrides. Test a representative application after changing its settings rather than assuming a profile load changed every program entry.

Return to Display > Change resolution > Customize and use the available control for the XML you exported, if the installed interface provides one. If the resolution is not offered for the current display or the interface has no import control, recreate it from the values in your notes. A custom resolution can be display-specific, so confirm the selected monitor before applying it.
Apply one display at a time and verify the result before moving to the next. If a mode is not listed, do not force a different display’s XML onto it; check the selected monitor and use the recorded timing values to recreate the mode only when the interface permits it.

Common pitfalls that cause lost settings
- Confusing Custom (Advanced) with a clean install. Custom installation exposes more choices, but the reset occurs only when the clean-install option is selected.
- Saving the backup where cleanup will remove it. Keep the
.nvp, XML, and screenshots outside folders you intend to delete. - Assuming a profile contains custom resolutions. NVIDIA documents a separate XML export, so handle resolutions independently.
- Expecting a profile to cover every new driver option. A newer package can add controls or change where a setting appears; compare the interface manually.
- Testing only one program. Global settings and per-application overrides can differ, so check the applications that matter.
- Assuming every NVIDIA product has the same menus. GeForce RTX users may see relevant controls in the NVIDIA app, while workstation, enterprise, or older products can expose different interfaces.
What changes for GeForce RTX users
NVIDIA has been moving modernized Control Panel functionality into the NVIDIA app for GeForce RTX products. NVIDIA says the app’s Graphics > Program Settings replaces the former Control Panel path 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings. The company describes the app as a driver-update and GPU-settings application on its NVIDIA App page, and discusses the Control Panel migration in its GeForce driver announcement.
These labels should be treated as GeForce RTX context, not as a universal map for every NVIDIA workstation, enterprise, or older product. Interface availability depends on the GPU and installed NVIDIA software. NVIDIA also notes that existing Control Panel installations remain unless the user performs a clean installation; after a clean install, a control you remember from the previous setup may therefore be located in the NVIDIA app or may require the relevant component to be installed again.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before restoring a setting, identify which application currently owns it. If it was previously under Control Panel’s program-settings page, look in Graphics > Program Settings in the NVIDIA app on supported GeForce RTX systems. Do not assume that a menu name shown in an older screenshot applies to every current installation.
Common situations and the safest choice
“I only want the newest driver.”
Use the overinstall path and leave Perform a clean installation unselected. That is the choice aligned with NVIDIA’s recommendation for retaining current settings or profiles.
“A previous driver caused problems, and I want a reset.”
Use the clean-install path, but treat the reset as intentional. Save the profile, custom-resolution XML, and notes first, then expect to rebuild anything those files do not cover.
“The Profiles menu is missing.”
Do not assume another backup exists. Continue with screenshots or written records of the settings you need, and understand that NVIDIA’s documented .nvp workflow is unavailable in that interface.
“My custom resolution disappeared.”
Confirm that the correct display is selected under Change resolution, then look for the control to load or recreate the exported XML. If the display, connection, or available modes changed, the saved resolution may not be offered exactly as before; use the exported values and your notes rather than assuming the driver will restore it automatically.
Best Value
“The clean install completed, but my old settings are still gone.”
That result is consistent with the option’s purpose. Load the saved profile if the Profiles menu is present, restore the custom resolution separately, and work through the remaining checklist. A clean installation is not a settings-preserving installation.
“Do I have to uninstall the old driver first?”
No. NVIDIA’s driver FAQ says the older driver does not need to be uninstalled before installing the newer one. If retention is your goal, overinstall the new package and avoid the clean-install checkbox. If a reset is your goal, use the installer’s documented clean option after making your backups.
Verification checklist
- Confirm the installed driver version in NVIDIA Control Panel under Help > System Information or in Windows Device Manager.
- Check each connected display’s resolution, refresh rate, orientation, and scaling.
- Review global 3D settings and the per-application entries you recorded.
- Load the saved
.nvpprofile if the Profiles menu is available. - Restore or recreate custom resolutions from the exported XML and notes.
- Open the applications that depend on your GPU and verify their expected behavior.
- For GeForce RTX hardware, check both NVIDIA Control Panel and the NVIDIA app because the relevant setting may now be under Graphics > Program Settings.
Bottom line
A clean NVIDIA driver installation without losing any settings is not the outcome NVIDIA documents: the clean-install option resets settings and removes profiles. To keep your configuration, overinstall the newer driver instead. When a clean reset is necessary, save the available .nvp profile, export custom resolutions as XML, record everything else that matters, and plan a deliberate restoration pass after the installer finishes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a true NVIDIA clean install keep my Control Panel settings?
No. NVIDIA’s installation guidance says the clean-install option restores NVIDIA settings to defaults and removes profiles you created. Use an overinstall instead when retaining the configuration is the priority.
Do I need to uninstall the old NVIDIA driver first?
No. NVIDIA’s driver FAQ says the recommended approach is to install the newer driver over the older one, without a preliminary uninstall. That overinstall is different from selecting Perform a clean installation.
Can I back up NVIDIA settings before a clean install?
You can save a Control Panel desktop profile as an .nvp file when the Profiles menu is available, and you can export custom resolutions separately as XML. NVIDIA does not promise that these files contain every setting, so also keep screenshots or written notes.
How do I save a custom resolution?
Open NVIDIA Control Panel, choose Display > Change resolution, select the display, choose Customize, and use the file icon beside the custom resolution to export it as XML. Repeat for each display whose custom modes you need.

What should I check after the driver installation?
Verify the driver version through Control Panel’s Help > System Information or Windows Device Manager. Then check each display, global and per-application settings, custom resolutions, and the applications that prompted the reinstall.
The Bottom Line
To preserve NVIDIA settings, overinstall the newer driver and leave Perform a clean installation unchecked. If a clean reset is required, save the available .nvp profile, export custom resolutions as XML, record everything else, and expect to restore settings manually.
