For routine dusting, start with a clean, very soft brush and gentle dry strokes. Support delicate parts, work without forcing joints, and stop once the loose dust is gone. Add moisture only if the figure’s own care instructions allow it.
What you need—and what to avoid
- Default tool: a clean, very soft detail brush. Sideshow’s written care guidance, last updated May 20, 2025, recommends a clean microfiber cloth or soft detail brush for dust. Hobbyco likewise recommends beginning with a clean, soft brush in its August 24, 2026 guide.
- Optional for recesses: a manual air blower can move loose dust from gaps without contact. It is optional, not a replacement for careful brushing.
- Do not use as a default: canned compressed air, alcohol, solvents, abrasive materials, or general-purpose cleaners. Canned air used too close may chill a surface or release liquid propellant; pressure can also harm fragile parts. Alcohol, solvents, and abrasives can damage painted surfaces.
Keep a light towel or divided tray beneath small accessories so they are easier to find if they come loose. Work on a stable surface with enough room to support the figure.

How to dust a figure safely
- Stabilize it. Hold the figure by a sturdy section and support thin accessories, hair strands, and other delicate details. Remove only parts designed to detach easily; do not force a tight joint or disassemble the figure just to reach dust.
- Brush gently, from higher areas downward. Use light strokes to lift loose dust. Go especially lightly around painted details, narrow parts, and articulated joints. If the brush catches on a feature or the finish changes, stop.
- Use a manual blower only if dust remains in a recess. Direct gentle airflow at loose dust, keeping the blower controlled around thin or brittle parts. Avoid close-range canned air.
- Inspect and stop when the dust is gone. Routine dusting does not call for moisture. Hobbyco recommends cleaning according to visible dust and display conditions rather than following a fixed schedule.
- For a remaining mark, check the maker’s instructions first. If spot cleaning is allowed, test a barely damp white cloth or cotton swab on an inconspicuous area. Dab gently; do not scrub or soak unless the maker explicitly recommends that method for the specific figure.
- Stop if the surface reacts. If color transfers to the cloth, paint becomes tacky, or a part starts to flex, stop cleaning and ask the maker for guidance rather than trying a stronger product.
Choose the method for the figure’s materials
A figure’s base material does not tell you whether every cleaner is safe. Painted, printed, metallic, clear, fabric, or flocked details may react differently, even when they are attached to the same piece of plastic. Product-specific care instructions should take precedence over a general cleaning method.
Recommended Free Tools
| Figure or detail | Practical approach |
|---|---|
| Painted PVC or ABS | Begin with dry brushing. Factory paint, printed details, metallic finishes, and clear parts can have different sensitivities, so spot-clean only if the maker’s instructions allow it. |
| Resin or polystone | These materials can be brittle. Avoid soaking and forceful airflow around thin parts; follow the figure’s own care guidance. |
| Articulated figures | Dust gently around joints and gaps. Avoid repeated disassembly for routine dusting, and do not force a tight joint. Moisture can be difficult to remove from narrow gaps. |
| Fabric, flocking, rubberized surfaces, or specialty coatings | Do not assume the plastic-figure method applies. Check the maker’s instructions for the specific material or finish. |
Why solvent and soak advice for model parts may not apply
Kotobukiya’s guidance on painting ABS parts warns that paint thinner can penetrate ABS and cause small cracks and brittleness. That is a reason to be cautious with solvents, not a routine cleaning method for finished figures. Its neutral-detergent soak advice concerns unpainted ABS model parts being prepared for painting; it should not be treated as permission to soak a finished collectible.

Some care advice permits a lightly dampened microfiber cloth if needed. That does not make moisture suitable for every figure: check the maker’s directions and the finish before using it. For routine dust, dry brushing remains the cautious first choice.
