Clean clip-on earbuds according to the instructions for their exact model. Use only permitted methods on the exterior and sound or microphone openings, clean charging contacts with a dry soft swab or cloth when the manual allows it, and let anything dampened dry fully at room temperature before docking or charging. Do not assume the earbuds’ moisture rating applies to the case.
Before you start: check the exact model’s instructions
Cleaning guidance varies by product and component. Check the earbud manual and any separate care directions for its charging case before choosing a cloth, wipe, brush, or cleaning liquid. In particular, confirm whether moisture is permitted near the earbud openings and case, and how the manufacturer says to clean charging contacts.

The examples below apply to the named models, not to all clip-on earbuds. Sony’s LinkBuds Clip maintenance and wetness guides are available in its maintenance instructions and wetness and charging instructions. For Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, consult the owner’s manual.
A safe cleaning sequence
- Remove loose surface dirt. Use a soft, dry cloth or swab if the manual permits it. Do not use a damp wipe unless the manufacturer allows its ingredients and moisture level.
- Clean openings only as directed. Use an approved tool gently across the opening’s surface. Do not force debris inward, insert a brush deeply, or blow or vacuum openings when the manual prohibits it.
- Keep charging contacts dry. If the manual permits cleaning them, use a dry, soft swab or cloth. Keep liquid away from charging ports and contacts.
- Clean the case without flooding it. Wipe the exterior and accessible recesses using only the method approved for that model. Do not assume the case is water-resistant because the earbuds are.
- Dry before docking or charging. If you used moisture, wipe it away and leave the earbuds and case to dry fully at room temperature before charging. Do not rely on a universal drying time; the cited Sony guide gives no fixed duration.
Model-specific directions
Sony LinkBuds Clip (WF-LC900)
Sony permits wiping the exterior with a pure-water wet wipe, followed by wiping away water with a soft, dry cloth. For the sound output hole, its guide allows tissue, a pure-water wet wipe, a tightly wrung cloth dampened with water, or—if dirt remains—a clean, soft brush swept gently over the surface. Do not push debris farther into the opening or insert the brush deeply.

Sony says not to use wipes containing alcohol, thinner, or benzene, and not to use an air duster: debris may enter the sound output holes. For the headset and case charging ports, it recommends a soft, dry cloth or cotton swab. If the earbuds or case get wet, wipe off moisture and let them dry at room temperature before charging. Sony warns not to charge while liquid or foreign matter is on the case USB-C port or headset charging port.
Bose Ultra Open Earbuds
Bose says to wipe the earbuds and case with a soft cotton swab or a damp cloth using water only. For microphone ports, it recommends a soft cotton swab or gentle soft-bristle brush, and warns not to blow air into or vacuum those ports. Clean earbud charging contacts with a dry, soft cotton swab or equivalent to help prevent corrosion.

Bose cautions against solvents, chemicals, and cleaning solutions containing alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives. Its manual also recommends storing the earbuds in the case and closing the lid to help keep debris out. These instructions are specific to Bose Ultra Open Earbuds.
Methods and materials to avoid
- Unapproved liquids and wipes: A cleaner acceptable for one component or model may damage another. Follow the exact manual; the Sony and Bose restrictions above are model-specific.
- Compressed air and vacuuming: Do not use these as general cleaning tricks around openings. Sony warns against air dusters for the LinkBuds Clip sound output holes, and Bose warns against blowing air into or vacuuming Ultra Open microphone ports.
- Sharp tools and deep brushing: They can push debris inward or damage an opening. Sony specifically cautions against deep brushing and pushing debris into its sound output hole.
- Wet charging contacts: Moisture or debris can interfere with charging or contribute to corrosion. Keep contacts dry and do not charge when liquid or foreign matter is present.
Keeping the charging case in good condition
Clean the case only as its own instructions permit, since its care requirements may differ from the earbuds’. Keep liquid out of charging ports and contacts, wipe away any moisture, and let the case dry fully at room temperature before charging. For Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, closing the lid when storing the earbuds helps keep debris out of the case. Routine cleaning does not require a special kit: a cotton swab is an ordinary option where the manufacturer permits it, and a soft brush should be used only when the model’s instructions approve it.
