Before handing over a Windows gaming PC, back up anything you want to keep, reset Windows with Remove everything, and then remove the device from your Microsoft account. For an ordinary consumer handoff, Windows’ optional Clean data setting can make deleted-file recovery harder, but Microsoft says it does not meet government and industry data-erasure standards.
Before you reset the PC, protect the data you want to keep
Copy your documents, photos, saves, game captures, browser data, and other files you still need to a safe destination before resetting. Check the backup before proceeding so you know the important files are actually there. Microsoft’s preparation guidance covers PCs being sold, gifted, or recycled: Before you recycle, sell, or gift your Xbox or Windows PC.

If you do not already have a separate safe backup destination, an external hard drive or SSD is one optional choice; Microsoft does not require a particular device or capacity. Keep the backup disconnected from the PC during the reset, and do not leave it with the computer unless you intend to transfer its contents too.

In Windows Recovery settings, start Reset this PC. Labels and paths vary by Windows release, so use Settings search for “Reset this PC” if the menu names on your machine differ. When asked what to keep, select Remove everything, not Keep my files. Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance says Remove everything reinstalls Windows and removes personal files, apps, and settings; Keep my files is intended to preserve personal files.

Clean data: an optional extra for consumer transfers
Windows may offer a Clean data option. Turning it on takes longer and makes it harder for another person to recover removed files. Microsoft Support cautions: “The data erasure functionality is targeted at consumers and does not meet government and industry data erasure standards.” Treat it as a consumer-oriented reset feature, not certified sanitization or a guarantee that recovery is impossible.
If you must meet a formal sanitization requirement or need stronger assurance, this consumer reset guidance alone does not establish the right method. The appropriate approach depends on the storage media, encryption state, threat model, and applicable requirements; get storage-specific guidance rather than assuming this setting is sufficient.

Cloud download or Local reinstall
Windows may also ask how to reinstall its files. Cloud download fetches a fresh Windows copy; Local reinstall uses files already on the PC. This choice concerns the reinstall source, not whether personal files are retained: choose Remove everything separately for a transfer. Cloud download depends on connectivity; local reinstall may be more convenient when the existing installation files are usable.
Let the reset finish, then remove the PC from your Microsoft account
Keep the PC powered and follow the on-screen reset process. When it completes, remove the device from your Microsoft account using Microsoft’s device-management guidance in its PC sale, gift, and recycling steps. Microsoft also describes unlinking the device to avoid affecting the Microsoft Store device limit. Account removal is a separate handoff step; do not assume the Windows reset performs it for you.

Check gaming and other third-party accounts separately
A Windows reset and Microsoft-account device removal do not establish that the PC has been deauthorized from Steam, Epic Games, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net, Discord, password managers, browser sync, or other services. Before transfer, review each service’s own device, session, and license controls and use its own sign-out or deauthorization options where available. These are service-specific steps, not a universal Windows reset guarantee.

A reset is not necessarily a return to the PC maker’s exact original factory image. Microsoft Learn’s Resetting a desktop PC article, last updated January 18, 2021, says packages added or modified during updates can remain; restoring the original factory image requires flashing that image. The article’s Settings path is dated, so rely on current Windows Recovery settings labels rather than treating that older path as universal.

Microsoft’s preparation article covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 and states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If the PC still runs Windows 10, do not assume it continues to receive ordinary free security updates.
