Let the pan cool completely, then wash it with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft, non-abrasive sponge or brush. Soak stuck-on food in warm soapy water instead of scraping it. Dry the pan before storing it, and check the care instructions for your exact model before using a dishwasher or a special cleaning method.
The safest general routine is simple: cool, wash gently, rinse and dry. The important exception is that dishwasher ratings and approved treatments for stubborn residue vary between cookware lines. A method listed for one maker or product should not automatically be applied to another.

Clean a ceramic pan in five steps
- Let it cool. Set the pan aside until it has cooled fully before washing. Avoid putting a hot pan into cold water: the sudden temperature change can warp cookware and may damage its coating. This cooling step applies even when the pan looks ready to rinse; do not use cold water to hurry the process.
- Wash gently. Use warm water, mild dish soap and a soft, non-abrasive sponge, sponge cloth or soft-bristle brush. Clean the cooking surface without scrubbing it with a rough or sharp tool. A soft sponge and a soft brush are both suitable; choose whichever is easier to grip or maneuver around the pan’s corners.
- Soak food that will not lift. Fill the pan with warm soapy water and let the residue soften before washing again. Le Creuset recommends a 15-to-20-minute soak for stubborn residue on its Essential Non-stick Ceramic cookware. That timing is specific to its care guidance, not a universal soak time for every pan.
- Rinse and dry. Rinse away soap and loosened food, then dry the cookware before putting it away. This completes the routine before storage; do not put the pan away with loosened residue still on the surface.
- Protect it in storage. If pans are stacked, place a cloth or cookware protector between them to help prevent one pan from rubbing against another.
This routine reflects gentle hand-cleaning guidance from cookware makers Calphalon, Le Creuset and ZWILLING, as well as coating supplier ILAG. Their recommendations support warm water, soap and soft cleaning tools. For a particular pan, follow its own care instructions if they differ. ILAG specifically directs consumers to follow the cookware manufacturer’s use-and-care instructions.

A soft non-abrasive sponge and a soft-bristle dish brush are both suitable options in the cited care guidance. Choose the one that is easier for you to hold or use around the pan’s corners. A sponge cloth is another gentle option. The relevant distinction is not sponge versus brush; it is soft, non-abrasive cleaning versus scouring the cooking surface.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use: warm water, mild dish soap, a soft sponge, sponge cloth or soft brush.
- Avoid on the cooking surface: steel wool, metal scouring pads, abrasive cleansers, harsh cleaners and the rough or abrasive side of a dish sponge.
- Do not force off stuck food: soak it in warm soapy water and try washing again rather than scraping the surface.
These are general care recommendations, not a guarantee that every cleaning product or technique is safe for every ceramic pan. The cited guidance does not establish a universally safe special cleaner, powder or home remedy. If your cookware maker specifies a different method, use its model-specific instructions.
For routine cleaning, there is no meaningful performance comparison between the soft sponge and soft brush in the manufacturer guidance. The practical choice is about handling: a brush may be easier for you to reach into corners, while a sponge may feel easier to hold. Neither option is a reason to press harder or switch to an abrasive surface when residue remains. Soak the pan instead.
Can ceramic cookware go in the dishwasher?
There is no single dishwasher rule for all ceramic cookware. Manufacturer guidance differs by product and line, so check the manual or care page for the exact pan instead of assuming that a ceramic coating makes it dishwasher-safe.

Handwashing is the gentler recommended routine on the page. |
| All-Clad | Its “All-Clad Use and Care Guide” says to handwash its hard-anodized ceramic nonstick line. | Do not put that line in the dishwasher; follow the instructions for the specific cookware. |
A label or instruction for one product line does not establish the rating for another. When the model’s status is unclear, handwash it with the gentle routine above and consult its care instructions before using a dishwasher. If you cannot identify the line from the pan itself, look for its packaging or manual, or consult the manufacturer’s product-specific care information rather than relying on a general rule about ceramic cookware.
Handwashing is a straightforward default when the exact dishwasher rating is unknown, but it should not be mistaken for proof that every pan has the same requirements. Calphalon’s page both lists dishwasher-safe ceramic products and recommends handwashing; All-Clad’s instructions for the hard-anodized ceramic nonstick line call for handwashing. Those are different instructions for different products, not a contradiction that can be resolved by applying one maker’s rule to all pans.

How to handle stuck food and special residue
For ordinary stuck-on food
Use a warm soapy soak to loosen the food, then clean with a soft sponge or brush. Soaking is the recommended alternative to scraping when food does not lift during a normal wash. Le Creuset’s care instructions give a 15-to-20-minute soak for stubborn residue on its Essential Non-stick Ceramic cookware. ZWILLING and ILAG also advise soaking, but do not give a universal duration in their cited care guidance. Do not treat Le Creuset’s timing as a required minimum or maximum for another manufacturer’s cookware.
After the soak, return to the same gentle washing method: warm water, mild soap and a soft tool. Rinse thoroughly and dry the pan. The cited instructions support loosening residue before cleaning; they do not support forcing it away with a metal utensil, scouring pad or abrasive side of a sponge.
For residue that does not come off
Do not escalate automatically to an abrasive powder, harsh cleaner or home remedy. Check the exact manufacturer’s instructions for an approved method. All-Clad’s general cookware-care information mentions boiling equal parts white vinegar and water for severe residue, but that is general guidance and should not be transferred to every ceramic surface without the pan maker’s approval.
This distinction matters because an instruction for cookware in general is not necessarily an instruction for every ceramic-coated pan. The cited care sources do not establish vinegar, baking products or another special treatment as a universal solution for ceramic cookware. If the model-specific care instructions do not address the residue, contact the manufacturer rather than testing a method that could be unsuitable for the coating.
Common cleaning mistakes
- Washing while the pan is hot: let it cool first; plunging hot cookware into cold water can cause warping. Calphalon cautions that a hot pan plunged into cold water can warp, and All-Clad’s guidance also supports letting cookware cool before cleaning.
- Scrubbing with metal or abrasive materials: steel wool, metal pads, abrasive cleansers and the rough side of a dish sponge are discouraged for ceramic cooking surfaces in the maker and coating-supplier care guidance.
- Scraping stuck food instead of soaking: warm soapy water is the supported first step for loosening residue. Soak and wash again with a soft tool.
- Assuming all ceramic pans share one dishwasher rating: ratings differ by product line and manufacturer. Check the exact model’s manual or care page.
- Borrowing a method from another cookware line: a cleaning method mentioned in general cookware advice may not be approved for your ceramic pan. Confirm the instruction applies to the exact product.
- Stacking pans without protection: put a cloth or cookware protector between stacked pans to avoid direct rubbing in storage.
Care instructions to check for your specific pan
Before using a dishwasher or trying a treatment for persistent residue, look for the manual or care page for the exact product or line. The coating supplier ILAG likewise directs consumers to follow the cookware manufacturer’s use-and-care instructions. If the pan came with printed instructions, use those alongside the maker’s current product-specific guidance.

Manufacturer instructions take precedence over generalized ceramic-care advice because they identify the care requirements for a particular product. Check the instructions specifically for cooling, handwashing or dishwasher use, soaking, and any method for persistent residue. Do not infer approval for a special cleaner merely because it is described for another pan or for cookware in general.
Manufacturer guidance is the most relevant source for caring for a specific product, but it is not an independent comparison of how long different coatings last. The practical approach is to use gentle handwashing unless the exact product instructions establish another suitable method. No comparative coating-longevity test or universal dishwasher standard is established by the care pages summarized here.
Choosing simple cleaning and storage tools
A soft non-abrasive dish sponge or soft-bristle brush is a relevant option for the washing step. Either can be used with warm water and mild dish soap, as long as the cleaning surface is soft and non-abrasive. Consider which tool is easier for you to hold and use around the pan’s corners; the care guidance does not establish that one is better for the coating than the other.
A cloth or reusable pan protector is an optional storage accessory if you stack cookware. Put it between pans so they do not rub directly against each other. These tools are conveniences, not substitutes for the cleaning routine or the cookware maker’s directions. No specific brand, price, retailer, or product listing is established by the care guidance, so choose only if the item suits your storage setup.
Sources and limits of general care advice
Calphalon’s “Cookware Use & Care: How to Clean Pots & Pans,” Le Creuset’s “Care And Use,” ZWILLING’s “Ceramic Non Stick Pans,” All-Clad’s “All-Clad Use and Care Guide,” and ILAG’s “Ceramic” page provide manufacturer or coating-supplier instructions. Le Creuset’s page gives the 15-to-20-minute soak recommendation for its own Essential Non-stick Ceramic cookware; the page does not state a publication date. The pages are care instructions, not independent comparative tests of coating life or cleaning performance.

As of 2026, the practical advice supported across these instructions remains to let the pan cool, clean it gently with warm soapy water and soft tools, soak rather than scrape stuck food, rinse and dry, and protect stacked pans. For dishwasher use or a special residue treatment, the exact cookware model’s current care instructions are decisive.

Should I wash a ceramic pan while it is still warm?
Wait until it has cooled fully before washing, especially before rinsing it with cold water. A sudden temperature change can warp cookware and may damage a coating.
Is vinegar safe for removing residue from every ceramic pan?
The cited care instructions do not establish vinegar as a universally safe treatment. All-Clad mentions boiling equal parts white vinegar and water for severe residue in general cookware guidance, but check your ceramic pan’s exact instructions before using that method.
Can I use the rough side of a dish sponge?
Avoid the rough or abrasive side on the cooking surface. Use the soft side, a soft sponge cloth or a soft-bristle brush, and soak food that does not lift easily.
How should I store ceramic pans if I stack them?
Place a cloth or cookware protector between pans to help prevent one pan from rubbing against another.
What should I do if my pan’s dishwasher or residue instructions are missing?
Use gentle handwashing and warm soapy water as the general routine, and consult the cookware maker’s product-specific care information before using a dishwasher or special treatment. If persistent residue is not addressed, ask the manufacturer rather than trying an abrasive cleaner or unapproved home remedy.
The Bottom Line
Cool ceramic cookware fully, wash with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft tool, and soak stuck food instead of scraping. Rinse and dry before storage, protect stacked pans, and check the exact model’s care instructions before using a dishwasher or special residue treatment.
