To help keep a wooden pool cue straight, clean it only with products approved for its brand and shaft, store it indoors in steady temperature and humidity, and protect it in a cue case. Don’t leave it in a car or prop it against a wall. Manufacturer recommendations differ, so use the instructions for your specific cue rather than treating one cleaning product or humidity target as universal.
Clean the cue according to its material and maker
First identify the cue’s brand, model, shaft material and finish. The available guidance is manufacturer-specific, not a universal cleaning recipe for every cue or shaft.

Clean the shaft
McDermott advises against using products that contain waxes or oils and names McDermott Renew and Ultraglide, along with its McMagic abrasive films, in its cue maintenance instructions. These are McDermott recommendations; don’t assume the products or abrasive films are suitable for another maker’s cue.
Becue recommends its Cleaner for quick shaft cleaning and its Degreaser for deeper cleaning. Its care and maintenance guidance does not establish those products as appropriate for all brands or shaft materials. Follow the instructions for your cue before applying a cleaner or abrasive.

Clean the wrap separately
For Poison cues, Predator says to wipe the wrap with a towel slightly dampened with water, then let it air-dry completely. That instruction applies to the wrap; don’t treat it as a method for cleaning the shaft or every cue’s handle. See Predator’s Poison cue care instructions.
Store the cue in steady indoor conditions
Temperature and humidity guidance varies by maker and product. The published figures below are recommendations from the manufacturers, not a single established target for every cue.

These ranges overlap but are not identical, so follow the guidance for your cue rather than averaging them.

Predator and Falcon caution against leaning or propping up wooden cues. Store yours horizontally in a suitable case rather than resting it against a wall. Avoid leaving it in a vehicle or exposing it to extreme or rapidly changing temperature and humidity, which the manufacturers associate with warping or finish damage. Predator recommends protecting the cue with a case; Falcon’s advice is available in its cue-care guidance.

For extended storage, check the case setup
McDermott recommends storing a cue vertically in its case with the case open to allow air movement. This is McDermott’s advice for extended storage, not a universal case-position rule; follow your cue maker’s directions and consider the conditions in the room where the case will sit.
A practical care routine
- Identify the cue. Check the maker’s instructions for the exact model, shaft and components before choosing a cleaner.
- Clean only as directed. Use the maker’s shaft-care method; treat the shaft and wrap as separate surfaces.
- Let cleaned parts dry. Predator specifically calls for complete air-drying after wiping a Poison wrap with a slightly damp towel.
- Put the cue away in a case. Keep it indoors, away from a wall, vehicle and extreme or changing conditions.
- For long-term storage, follow the maker’s case instructions. McDermott’s recommendation is a vertically stored case left open for air movement.
What the recommendations can—and cannot—tell you
The humidity figures are manufacturer care recommendations, not results of independent testing. The cited guidance does not quantify how much a case or a particular humidity level reduces warping risk, and it does not establish a universal best cleaner. Use the recommendations as model-specific care advice, not as a guarantee that a cue cannot warp.
