How to Clean and Store a Fossil Tooth Without Damaging It

For a stable fossil tooth, remove only loose dust with a very soft brush and store it in a fitted, inert container. Skip household cleaning methods and seek specialist advice for fragile, coated, or matrix-attached specimens.

For a stable, prepared fossil tooth, limit home cleaning to gently dusting loose surface debris with a very soft brush. Store it in a fitted, inert container that supports it, prevents rolling, and keeps its label and identifying information with it. Do not scrub, soak, apply household products, or remove attached rock. If the tooth is cracked, flaking, powdery, coated, or otherwise unstable, leave it untouched and ask a fossil preparator or natural-history conservator for advice.

First decide whether the tooth is safe to handle

Look closely before touching it. Check for cracks, loose flakes, a powdery surface, old glue or coatings, attached rock (matrix), and labels or notes that may carry identification or provenance. If any part looks unstable—or you are unsure whether a surface layer is part of the specimen—do not try to clean it.

Cleaning loose dust is not the same as fossil preparation. Removing matrix can require specialized mechanical or chemical methods, and poor technique can cause damage. The Natural History Museum, London, describes preparation as specialist work with risks to specimens: how fossils are prepared.

How to remove loose dust from a stable tooth

If the tooth is prepared, stable, and has only loose surface dust, a very soft brush may be used with minimal contact. Brush gently; do not scrub, try to brighten the surface, or keep going if particles shift or detach. The National Park Service’s 2005 museum housekeeping handbook discusses careful soft-brush dusting for certain fossils, not a tooth-specific cleaning protocol. The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) cautions that even careful cleaning can cause damage, so this is a narrow option rather than a routine treatment: NPS Museum Handbook, Appendix K and CCI guidance for natural-history collections.

  • Stop if the surface powders, flakes, cracks, or sheds material.
  • Do not try to remove dirt that is firmly attached or rock that surrounds the tooth; that is preparation, not dusting.
  • Do not use water, detergent, vinegar, bleach, oil, polish, household solvents, ultrasonic cleaners, pins, knives, picks, or rotary tools. The cited institutional sources do not establish these as safe methods for fossil teeth.
  • Keep labels, notes, and other identification data with the specimen. CCI notes that natural-history specimens can lose much of their value when associated collection data is lost.

Choose storage that supports the tooth

A small tooth should not roll freely or strike the sides of its container. Use a container sized to the specimen and a fitted nest or mount that holds it securely without crushing, snagging, or abrading it. The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) discusses options for small fossils, including single mammal teeth, in its fossil preparation and conservation guidance.

Storage option What to consider
Gel cap Compact and easy to use, but AMNH notes that moisture can affect gel caps and they can become brittle. Keep one inside another closed container, or consider a more stable polypropylene capsule.
Polypropylene capsule, small box, or vial Can protect a small specimen when the material is suitable and the fit prevents movement. NPS also describes small fossils stored in a vial or plastic box. Check that the tooth cannot roll or rattle inside.
Tooth mounted on a pin in a vial Can make a specimen easier to handle, but involves adhesive contact and possible mount or stopper failure. AMNH discusses reversible adhesives as part of institutional mount guidance; this is not a recommendation to glue a personal fossil at home.

For housing materials, AMNH lists polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, natural unbleached cotton, acid-free paper, Mylar, and acrylics as generally suitable for long-term storage. CCI recommends non-snagging materials such as polyethylene non-woven fabric and smooth foams for vulnerable specimens. Avoid loose cotton wool, tissue, or generic foam unless you can verify that it will not snag, abrade, crush, or chemically affect the tooth. Material names alone do not guarantee that a particular product or construction is suitable.

When humidity needs specialist attention

Not all fossil teeth are made of the same material. Pyrite can occur in fossil material and may deteriorate in humid conditions. AMNH says keeping pyrite-bearing fossils below 45% relative humidity (RH) prevents this deterioration and recommends below 30% RH once deterioration has begun; its resource was originally developed in 2007. CCI says pyrite in fossils is particularly vulnerable above 50% RH in the presence of oxygen. These are institution-specific, pyrite-related recommendations, not interchangeable targets for every tooth: AMNH fossil conservation guidance and CCI natural-history collections guidance.

Some Ice Age teeth are subfossils that retain organic collagen. CCI notes that such material can crack or delaminate when RH fluctuates and should be treated as vulnerable organic bone or ivory. If the tooth may contain pyrite, may be a subfossil, or has an uncertain composition, ask a natural-history conservator about its humidity needs instead of adding a desiccant or sealing it based on a guessed target.

When to contact a fossil specialist

Leave the tooth as it is and seek advice from an experienced fossil preparator or natural-history conservator if it is cracked, powdering, flaking, coated, attached to matrix, suspected to contain pyrite, or potentially a subfossil. Professional preparation can itself damage a specimen if methods are unsuitable, so avoid attempting a repair or cleaning treatment while you decide whom to consult.
