Look for the product label, model name, or original product information, then find the care instructions for that specific item. IKEA’s directions vary by product and material: for example, its instructions for the FARDAL door are not a universal rule for every IKEA surface.

Before cleaning, check for loose hardware, missing parts, damaged edges, bubbling, peeling, or signs of water exposure. If you cannot identify the finish, keep treatment gentle and avoid restoration methods that could alter it.
2. How to clean second-hand IKEA furniture
Remove dust and loose dirt
Use a soft or microfiber cloth and gentle movements to remove loose dust. IKEA Turkey’s furniture-cleaning guidance recommends soft cloths, avoiding abrasive products, and drying wood surfaces after cleaning: IKEA’s furniture-cleaning advice (published March 7, 2025).

Wipe only with a cleaner the product allows
If the item’s instructions permit it, wipe with a soft cloth dampened with water and mild soap or detergent. Do not soak the furniture. Dry it with a soft cloth, particularly if the finish may be sensitive to moisture. IKEA gives this mild-soap method for its FARDAL door, and says not to use alcohol-containing or abrasive cleaners on that door: FARDAL door care instructions. Those warnings are specific to that product; follow the care instructions for your own item.
Stop if the finish reacts
As a cautious step, try a permitted cleaning method on a small, inconspicuous area first. This is a practical precaution, not a universal IKEA requirement. Stop if the finish transfers, swells, turns cloudy, or lifts. Do not respond by escalating to stronger cleaners or scrubbing tools; the right treatment for an unidentified finish is not established by general furniture-cleaning guidance.

3. Choose restoration based on the material and problem
