For someone ready to play out of the box
Choose a preconstructed deck rather than a booster pack if the main goal is to start playing. Pokémon Support says preconstructed decks contain 60 fixed cards and are intended to be playable right out of the box. Booster packs have random contents and are better suited to someone seeking card variety or collecting a set; they are a less dependable choice when the recipient wants a particular card. When is a plush or figure the better choice?
Choose a plush or figure when the recipient’s enjoyment centers on a Pokémon character, not on learning or playing a card game. Plush is the more direct option if they want something soft to cuddle; a figure may suit someone who prefers a character item to play with or display. These are broad category distinctions, not guarantees about an individual product’s features.

What should you check before buying?
- Recipient’s interests: Is the gift for collecting, trading, and playing, or for enjoying a favorite character as a toy or collectible?
- Age guidance: Check the label on the particular product. My First Battle is listed for ages 6+, but that guidance does not apply to every card product or toy.
- What comes in the box: A preconstructed deck has fixed contents; a booster pack is random. For toys, confirm the specific item and its dimensions rather than assuming all figures or plush toys are alike.
- Whether cards are playable: If the recipient wants to play immediately, look for a preconstructed deck. A pack of random boosters is not the same kind of ready-to-play gift.
- Stock: Check current retailer availability before planning around a particular TCG product. Pokémon’s availability update reported that high demand had affected access to some products and described efforts to maximize production and reprint impacted items; it is not a live inventory report.
