Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Wipe lightly; if a mark remains, use only the liquid your laptop maker allows, applied to the cloth—not the display. Keep moisture away from the panel edges and openings, then dry with a second clean cloth.
There is no universal “screen-safe” chemical. Alcohol, vinegar, detergent, glass cleaner and commercial wipes are acceptable for some device families and harmful to others, so identify the exact model and follow its care instructions before using anything stronger than water.

The safest cleaning method at a glance
- Shut down completely. Disconnect the charger and any external power or peripherals.
- Prepare two clean, soft microfiber or lint-free cloths. Do not substitute paper towels, tissues or a rough household towel.
- Wipe the dry screen first. Use light strokes to lift dust and ordinary fingerprints.
- Check the model’s care instructions before adding liquid. If water is permitted, lightly dampen one cloth with purified or distilled water.
- Wipe gently. Never spray, pour or drip liquid on the panel, and keep it away from the bezel, hinges, ports and keyboard.
- Dry immediately. Use the second dry microfiber cloth with light passes, then leave the lid open until the surface is completely dry.
This sequence follows the common ground in guidance from ASUS, HP and MSI, while accounting for important differences between device families. The links in the sections below take you to each manufacturer’s instructions.
Why a touchscreen needs more care than an ordinary window
A laptop touchscreen is a precision input surface as well as a display. Its outer layers must remain optically clear and responsive to touch. A gritty cloth can drag particles across that surface; forceful rubbing can spread an oily film instead of removing it; and liquid that reaches an edge can travel into the display assembly or nearby electronics.

Manufacturers also use different surface treatments and publish different chemical rules. ASUS warns that alcohol- and ammonia-based cleaners can damage a screen coating. Microsoft permits a soft cloth dampened with water or an isopropyl-alcohol solution of 70% or less for Surface devices, while prohibiting glass cleaner and other chemical cleaners. Those statements apply to their own product families, not to every touchscreen laptop. Treat the model-specific manual as the authority.
Cleaning is therefore a controlled, low-moisture operation rather than a spray-and-wipe job. The objective is to remove contamination while keeping the coating, touch layer and edge seals dry and unscratched.
Prepare the laptop and your work area
Power down and isolate the device
Save your work, shut the operating system down, disconnect the charger and remove external accessories. ASUS explicitly tells users to power off and unplug before cleaning its panels; HP gives the same advice for monitor care. A dark, unpowered screen also makes smears easier to see and prevents accidental taps while you wipe.

Use the right cloths
Choose a clean, soft microfiber or other lint-free cloth. Have one cloth for lifting dirt and a separate dry cloth for the final pass. A cloth that was used with furniture polish, fabric softener or abrasive dust can transfer residue, so laundering it is not enough if it still feels gritty. Fold the cloth so your fingers do not press concentrated points against the glass.
Keep approved liquid nearby, not over the laptop
If the manual permits water, use a small amount of purified or distilled water in a container away from the computer. You need only enough to make a cloth slightly damp; a wet cloth is too wet. Do not prepare a mixed solution until the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model call for one.

Step-by-step cleaning procedure
1. Inspect before wiping
With the laptop off, look at the screen from an angle. Note whether the problem is loose dust, fingerprints, a dried spot or a mark that appears to be under the surface. Do not pick at a hardened speck with a fingernail or tool. If particles are visible, tilt the display so they can fall away rather than dragging them across the panel.
2. Remove dust with a dry microfiber cloth
Lay the cloth flat and make slow, light passes from one side to the other. Use overlapping strokes, turning to a clean section as oils collect. ASUS recommends beginning with a clean microfiber cloth; HP likewise says a dry, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth can remove dust and light smudges. Stop if you feel grit catching under the cloth and shake or replace it away from the laptop.

3. Treat a remaining mark only with model-approved moisture
Read the laptop maker’s care page before proceeding. Where water is allowed, lightly dampen the cloth with purified or distilled water, wring or squeeze it so no drops can form, and test the dampness on your hand. ASUS says to put purified water on the cloth rather than on the screen. HP specifies a slightly damp cloth with distilled water, and MSI recommends pure or distilled water on a dampened sponge for stains.
4. Wipe the affected area without pressure
Use short, gentle strokes over the mark, then make a wider pass to blend the area. Do not scrub back and forth rapidly, press on a stubborn spot or try to scratch it off. Let the damp cloth soften residue; if it does not release after a few light passes, stop and consult the model’s support instructions instead of escalating to a stronger chemical.
5. Keep edges and openings dry
Do not run a wet cloth into the bezel seam, hinge line, webcam opening, speakers, ports or keyboard. These are routes by which moisture can reach internal parts. Keep the laptop open and level while cleaning so liquid cannot pool at an edge. If a drop forms, blot it immediately with a dry corner of the cloth rather than pushing it sideways.

6. Dry and inspect
Use the second clean microfiber cloth to lift remaining moisture with light passes. Hold the screen at an angle to check for streaks, fibers or beads of water. Leave the lid open until the surface is fully dry before reconnecting power or closing the computer. If moisture has entered an opening, keep the laptop powered off and follow the manufacturer’s support procedure; do not turn it on merely to check whether it still works.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich liquids are acceptable?
The table shows why a generic recipe is unsafe. Each entry is manufacturer guidance for a particular product family, not a promise that the same liquid is suitable for another laptop.
| Source and scope | What it allows or recommends | What it warns against |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS panel guidance | Start with a clean microfiber cloth. If needed, apply purified water to the cloth, never the panel. | Alcohol- or ammonia-based cleaners; excessive force; liquid around screen edges. ASUS notes that its information may not apply to every product in the category. |
| HP monitor guidance (United States) | Dry microfiber for dust and light smudges; a slightly damp cloth with distilled water for marks. The page also mentions a 50/50 distilled-water and white-vinegar mixture for some stubborn monitor stains. | Paper towels and tissues, direct spraying and excess moisture. The vinegar suggestion is not a universal laptop-touchscreen method. |
| MSI notebook guide (dated December 1, 2023) | Use a dampened sponge or fine-fiber cloth with pure or distilled water for stains; dry gently afterward. | Hard pressure, attempts to scratch stains away and vigorous scrubbing. |
| Microsoft Surface care | For Surface devices, a soft cloth dampened with water or an isopropyl-alcohol solution of 70% or less. | Glass cleaner, other chemical cleaners, and spraying or pouring liquid directly onto the Surface. |
If you cannot identify the laptop model, use a dry microfiber cloth only until you find the official manual. Do not infer that a Surface rule applies to an ASUS, HP or MSI notebook, or that a monitor instruction covers every touchscreen coating.
Products and habits to avoid
| Avoid | Reason and safer alternative |
|---|---|
| Spraying or pouring liquid on the display | Liquid can run into the bezel and internal components. Put an approved liquid on the cloth first. |
| Paper towels, tissues, toilet paper and rough towels | Manufacturers warn that these materials can scratch or leave abrasive fibers. Use a clean, soft microfiber cloth. |
| Hard pressure or vigorous scrubbing | Force can damage the surface and spread residue. Use light strokes and stop when a mark does not release. |
| Alcohol, ammonia, vinegar, detergent or glass cleaner chosen by guesswork | Chemical tolerance varies by model. Check the exact care instructions; do not treat a household cleaner as automatically screen-safe. |
| Sharp objects, fingernails and abrasive pads | They can scratch the outer surface and may worsen a dried spot. Allow an approved damp cloth to soften residue instead. |
| Cleaning while the laptop is powered or charging | Power-off cleaning reduces accidental input and the risk associated with moisture near electronics. Disconnect power first. |
How to protect the display between cleanings
Prevent keyboard-to-screen transfer cautiously
HP suggests placing a thin microfiber cloth over the keyboard before closing a laptop to help prevent oils transferring to the display. Treat this as an optional, model-dependent measure: lid clearance and keyboard design differ, and a cloth that is too thick could put pressure on the panel. Use it only if the manufacturer’s design and instructions leave adequate clearance, and remove it before using the laptop.
Close and carry the computer as designed
Keep the lid closed when carrying or when the device is not in use if that is how the manufacturer designs it to be protected. Microsoft gives this advice for Surface covers specifically; it is not a substitute for checking the instructions for another laptop. Do not place objects between the keyboard and display unless the maker explicitly supports that practice.

Keep the storage environment clean
Store the laptop in a sleeve or bag that is free of grit and spilled liquids. Avoid placing it screen-down on a dirty surface. These habits reduce the amount of abrasive dust that can reach the panel and the amount of cleaning pressure needed later, without requiring a chemical coating or aftermarket film.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common marks
Dust or ordinary fingerprints
Use the dry-cloth step only. Turn the cloth to a clean section and make another light pass. Adding liquid to a mark that would have lifted dry only increases the chance of streaks and edge moisture.
Oily film that remains after dry wiping
Confirm that the cloth is clean, then follow the model’s approved water method. Use the smallest amount of moisture that works and dry immediately. If the manual does not specify a liquid, stop at dry microfiber rather than experimenting with alcohol or a household cleaner.
A dried splash or sticky spot
Do not scrape it. If distilled or purified water is approved, hold a slightly damp cloth over the area briefly and wipe gently, repeating once if necessary. A spot that remains after careful, approved treatment needs model-specific support; stronger fluid or pressure can turn a removable stain into coating damage.
Streaks after cleaning
Streaks usually indicate too much moisture, a dirty cloth or incomplete drying. Switch to a clean, dry microfiber cloth and make light passes. Do not add more cleaner to chase a streak. If the appearance changes when the screen is viewed from different angles, inspect for residue before assuming the panel is permanently damaged.

Moisture near an edge or opening
Stop wiping, keep the laptop powered off and blot visible liquid without pushing it toward the seam. Do not reconnect the charger to test it. Consult the manufacturer’s support instructions for liquid exposure; internal damage cannot be ruled out by a screen that appears dry.
A scratch, cloudy patch or coating change
Cleaning cannot reverse a physical scratch or a coating that has been altered by an incompatible chemical. Avoid further rubbing and record the laptop model and the product used, if any, before contacting the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Continuing to polish the area can enlarge the affected patch.
A decision path when the model is unknown
- Identify the exact model. Check the underside label, system information or the purchase record; model families can have different care rules.
- Find the manufacturer’s display-cleaning instructions. Prefer the official support page or manual for that model and region.
- Apply the least aggressive method first. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth before considering any liquid.
- Compare the wording, not internet generalities. Look specifically for whether water, distilled water, isopropyl alcohol, vinegar or another fluid is permitted.
- When instructions are silent, do less. Continue with dry microfiber and ask manufacturer support rather than guessing.
This approach resolves the apparent conflict between the sources: their recommendations are consistent within their own device lines but cannot be safely generalized across all touchscreen laptops.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How often should you clean?
No universal cleaning interval or damage-rate study establishes a safe number of times per week. Clean when fingerprints or dust interfere with viewing or touch use, and use the least intensive method that removes the problem. Frequent dry dusting is preferable to repeated wet cleaning. A visible mark that does not respond to a single careful, approved treatment is a reason to stop, not to increase the frequency or chemical strength.
Quick checklist before closing the lid
- The laptop is shut down and unplugged.
- The cloth is clean, soft and lint-free.
- The first pass was dry and used light pressure.
- Any liquid was approved for this exact model and applied to the cloth, never sprayed on the screen.
- No moisture remains at the bezel, hinge, ports, speakers or keyboard.
- The panel is fully dry before power is restored or the lid is closed.
- Any keyboard-cover cloth is thin enough for the manufacturer’s design and removed before use.
Bottom line
A dry microfiber cloth, gentle pressure and a powered-off laptop solve most touchscreen smudges safely. Distilled or purified water is an optional next step only when the model’s instructions allow it. Because ASUS, HP, MSI and Microsoft publish different chemical guidance, never assume that alcohol, vinegar or a commercial cleaner is safe for an unidentified touchscreen. Keep liquid off the panel and away from its edges, dry immediately, and stop when a mark does not yield to the approved method.
