It measures the absolute air pressure at your wrist, then converts that pressure to an estimated elevation using a pressure model and a reference value. Because air pressure changes with weather as well as height, the displayed elevation can rise or fall while you remain in the same place.
Drift is usually a calibration, weather, operating-mode, environmental-transition or sensor-opening problem—not proof that the watch has suddenly failed. The practical fix is to identify which assumption the watch is making, restore a trustworthy elevation reference, and check that the pressure port is clean and uncovered.

What an altimeter watch actually measures
The pressure sensor inside an outdoor watch measures absolute atmospheric pressure: the force exerted by the air around the case. The watch then applies a pressure-to-altitude relationship and a reference value to estimate elevation above sea level or another chosen datum. It is therefore a barometric altimeter, not a direct height sensor.
Pressure generally decreases as you go higher because there is less air above you. That relationship is predictable enough for an estimate, but it is not one-to-one in real weather. A high- or low-pressure system can change the pressure at ground level, and temperature and local conditions also affect the atmosphere. There is no single pressure reading that always represents one exact elevation.

Manufacturers describe the result as approximate. Garmin’s fēnix 9 Series Owner’s Manual, version 1 dated August 2026, states: “The altimeter displays your approximate elevation based on pressure changes.” The word approximate matters: the number is useful for tracking a climb, descent or trend after calibration, but it is not a surveyed altitude.
The reference value is the anchor
To turn pressure into elevation, the watch needs an anchor such as a known elevation at your starting point, a GPS-derived position, a digital elevation model (DEM), or a pressure reference supplied by the device’s software. If that anchor is wrong or becomes stale, every subsequent altitude value can be offset even when the pressure sensor itself is working normally.
Some watches can also calculate sea-level pressure. In that use, the device assumes your physical elevation is fixed and interprets pressure changes as weather. The same sensor is involved in both functions; the selected profile tells the algorithm which explanation to prefer.

How the watch decides whether pressure means height or weather
Sensor modes encode different assumptions. Names and menu behavior vary by model, but the underlying distinction is consistent.

| Mode | Primary assumption | Useful for | Main failure case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Altimeter | Pressure changes mainly represent a change in elevation. | Hiking, climbing, skiing and recording ascent or descent. | Weather-driven pressure changes appear as false elevation movement when you are stationary. |
| Barometer | Your elevation is fixed, so pressure changes mainly represent weather. | Watching pressure trends and anticipating changing conditions at camp or home. | Actual climbing or descending is displayed as a pressure or weather trend instead of a height change. |
| Automatic | The watch attempts to infer whether movement or weather is the better explanation. | General use when you do not want to switch profiles manually. | The inference can be wrong during rapid weather changes, transport, indoor/outdoor transitions or stop-start activity. |
Automatic behavior is device-specific. One model may use movement sensors, GPS fixes, time spent at a location or additional filtering; another may implement a different rule. Do not assume that an automatic setting behaves identically across brands or software versions.
Why an elevation reading drifts while you are not moving
Weather changes look like vertical movement
A pressure system can move through while you remain at one elevation. In an altimeter interpretation, a pressure drop may be calculated as if you climbed; a pressure rise may look like descent. Suunto’s guidance warns that weather changes can make altitude readings incorrect both while stationary and while climbing. Automatic correction can reduce this effect, but it cannot know the future weather perfectly.
The selected mode conflicts with what you are doing
Mode mismatch creates the opposite error. If the watch is treating pressure as weather in barometer mode and you walk uphill, it may suppress or mislabel the elevation change. If it is treating pressure as height in altimeter mode during a storm, it can show a climb that never happened. Check the profile before interpreting a long trend.

Calibration has become stale
Calibration establishes the starting relationship between pressure and elevation. Spending a long time at a fixed location, changing regions or experiencing a substantial weather shift can make that relationship less useful. Garmin recommends periodic calibration in its cited guidance because an unchanged reference can drift away from current conditions.

Moving between different air environments
Air-conditioning, heating, vehicles, buildings and pressurized aircraft can expose the port to conditions that differ from the outdoor atmosphere. Garmin identifies transitions between climate-controlled or pressurized spaces and outdoors as a troubleshooting consideration. Give the watch the acclimation time specified by its manual before judging the outdoor reading.
The pressure opening is wet, blocked or covered
The sensor must sample the surrounding air. Water droplets, mud, dust, sunscreen residue, a tight sleeve or a case accessory can obstruct the port and produce unstable or implausible values. A watch can appear to work while its pressure response is simply delayed or damped.
Follow the model’s cleaning instructions. Do not push a pin, brush, toothpick or other object into the opening; Suunto specifically warns against inserting objects into sensor openings. If the manual permits rinsing, use only the stated method and allow the watch to dry as directed.

Use the exact manual for your model and software version. Menu labels, available inputs and automatic behavior are not universal. The general process is to choose a trustworthy reference, enter or obtain it through an approved method, and let the watch settle in the environment where you will use it.

Choose a reliable reference
- Known elevation: Use a surveyed trailhead, marked summit, benchmark or other location whose elevation corresponds closely to your position.
- Topographic map: Suunto Core guidance identifies a topographic map as a possible source. Check the map’s scale, contour interval, datum, coverage and whether the point you selected is actually where you are standing.
- GPS: A satellite-derived elevation can be convenient but may be noisy, especially under canopy, beside cliffs or before the receiver has a good fix.
- Digital elevation model: A DEM can provide an automatic estimate. Its resolution and the watch’s matching method determine how representative it is for your exact position.
- Sea-level pressure: A local national weather service can provide a pressure reference, but it must be for the right location and time and must match the watch’s calibration method.
Do not mix a sea-level pressure value with an elevation-entry field, or use a weather-station value from a distant town, unless the manual explicitly explains how to convert it.
Garmin fēnix 9 example
The fēnix 9 Series manual describes three calibration inputs: manual elevation entry, DEM-based calibration and GPS-based calibration. It also states that the watch can self-calibrate when satellite systems are used. These are Garmin-specific instructions, not a promise that every altimeter watch offers the same choices.
- Go outdoors where the sky view is clear and select the watch’s altimeter calibration control.
- Choose the available source—known elevation, DEM or GPS—according to the reference you trust for that location.
- Confirm the value and allow the watch to complete the calibration rather than immediately entering a building or vehicle.
- Record the time and place of calibration if you need to compare readings later; a reference is meaningful only with its location and conditions.
Garmin’s troubleshooting guidance recommends manual calibration outdoors with a clear sky and allowing time to acclimate after a significant environmental change. A different Garmin model, or a later software version, may present a different path, so verify the labels on your device.

When you know the elevation but not the pressure
Entering a known elevation is usually the most direct reset because the watch can derive the corresponding pressure relationship itself. Suunto’s guidance notes that a topographic map can supply the reference. Ensure that the map’s elevation refers to your exact point, not merely the nearest town or trailhead.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
Work through these checks in order so you do not recalibrate a blocked sensor or blame weather for a mode error.
- Confirm the symptom. Decide whether the value is a fixed offset, a slow drift while stationary, sudden jumps, or a failure to change during a climb. Each pattern points to a different assumption or physical problem.
- Check the operating profile. Use an altimeter interpretation for a known elevation change and a barometer interpretation when you are deliberately monitoring weather at a fixed elevation. Treat automatic mode as an inference, not a guarantee.
- Inspect the pressure port. Remove clothing or accessories covering it. Look for water or debris without probing the opening.
- Clean only as the manual allows. Use the manufacturer’s approved rinse, wipe or drying procedure. Avoid compressed air, solvents and inserted tools unless the manual explicitly permits them.
- Let the watch acclimate. Move outdoors, wait the period specified by the model’s guidance, and avoid judging the first value after leaving a heated, cooled or pressurized environment.
- Recalibrate from a defensible reference. Use known elevation, GPS or DEM only where your model supports it. Perform Garmin’s documented outdoor calibration steps if you own a fēnix 9; do not copy those menu assumptions to another watch.
- Compare over time, not one instant. After calibration, observe whether the value follows a real ascent or descent and whether the stationary trend tracks weather reports. A single noisy GPS fix is not proof of sensor failure.
- Escalate persistent implausible behavior. If the port is clean, the watch has acclimated and an approved calibration does not help, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service center. Do not open the case or attempt to repair the pressure sensor yourself.
How to interpret accuracy and drift claims
Manufacturer documentation explains the measurement principle and operating procedures, but the sources cited here do not provide a named, dated statistic for typical drift or a controlled accuracy ranking across brands. Treat forum claims such as a universal “accuracy of” number with caution unless they identify the model, firmware, weather, calibration source, terrain and test method.
An altimeter can be very useful without producing a survey-grade number. For route recording, the important question may be whether cumulative ascent is consistent after calibration. For navigation near a contour line, a map, GPS position and terrain knowledge remain necessary. For aviation, professional surveying or regulated safety decisions, use equipment approved for that purpose rather than relying on a consumer watch.

| Selection question | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Is there a barometric pressure sensor? | GPS-only watches estimate elevation differently and cannot use local pressure trends in the same way. | Look for an explicitly listed barometric or pressure sensor. |
| Which calibration inputs are accepted? | More valid inputs make it easier to restore a reference in the field. | Known elevation, GPS, DEM and any pressure-reference workflow documented for the model. |
| How does automatic mode work? | Automatic switching can reduce manual changes but may misclassify unusual conditions. | The manufacturer’s explanation of movement detection, weather handling and profile switching. |
| Is there a clear manual procedure? | A documented reset is valuable when weather or travel invalidates the starting reference. | Whether the manual gives an outdoor calibration path, acclimation advice and sensor-cleaning instructions. |
Feature lists explain capability, not comparative accuracy. There is no evidence here for declaring one manufacturer categorically more accurate than another. Choose the model whose sensor, calibration inputs and manual match your activities and the references you can realistically obtain.
Limits that remain after calibration
- Weather can continue changing after a perfect starting calibration, so a stationary altimeter display may move.
- GPS and DEM estimates have location and resolution limits; a value can be reasonable for a broad area but off at a cliff, ridge or steep slope.
- Pressure at wrist level may differ briefly from the surrounding outdoor air when the port is covered or wet.
- Software updates can alter menu labels or automatic filtering. Recheck the current manual after an update.
- Elevation is a reference-dependent quantity. Two devices can show different numbers while both are internally consistent if they use different datums or calibration times.
The useful mental model
Think of an altimeter watch as a pressure trend instrument with an elevation scale attached. When you move vertically, the pressure trend is often the signal you want. When weather changes, the same trend is a confounding signal. Mode selection tells the watch which explanation to favor; calibration supplies the starting point; a clear sensor port lets it observe the air accurately.
That model explains why a reading can drift without a hardware fault and why cleaning alone cannot correct a stale reference. Check the assumptions first, then calibrate from a location-appropriate source and use the watch’s documented maintenance procedure.
