For everyday cleaning, use warm water, a little mild detergent and a soft cloth; rinse away residue and dry the surface. Wipe spills promptly, use a cutting board for food preparation, and set hot cookware on a trivet or hot pad. For a stubborn stain or any stronger cleaner, first identify the countertop’s manufacturer and follow its care instructions: bleach and stain treatments that one brand allows may be unsuitable for another.
How to clean quartz countertops day to day
Start with the gentlest routine: remove loose crumbs, wipe the surface with a soft cloth dampened with warm water and mild detergent, rinse with clean water, and dry with a soft cloth or paper towel. This is the common approach in the routine-care instructions from Caesarstone and Cosentino for Silestone. For Silestone, Cosentino specifies neutral soap and a damp microfiber cloth, followed by wiping away residue and drying.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That sequence matters: cleaning removes everyday soil, rinsing carries away soap and loosened residue, and drying helps keep water and cleaner from being left on the surface. Caesarstone notes that wiping wet spills away helps prevent patina and limescale buildup. A quick wipe after cooking or a spill is a useful habit; there is no need to turn ordinary cleanup into a chemical-treatment step.
Do not use a sharp edge to scrape debris from the counter. A soft cloth is a sensible first choice because rough or abrasive tools may damage a surface or finish. Caesarstone permits a non-abrasive scourer for routine cleaning of its surfaces, but that is not a blanket approval for every brand; check the instructions for your installed product before using one.

If you are wiping crumbs or dried food, first loosen them with warm water and the soft cloth rather than digging at them with a knife or other sharp object. If the mark remains, pause before reaching for a stronger tool or cleaner. A dried spot may need the manufacturer’s stain-specific approach, and an aggressive attempt can introduce a different problem, such as an unwanted chemical exposure or damage to the finish.
Identify the surface before treating a stubborn mark
“Quartz countertop” is not enough information to choose every stain remover. Care instructions differ by manufacturer, and an allowed product or procedure for one surface should not be assumed safe for another. Check paperwork from the installer, the product label, or the manufacturer’s care page to identify the brand and, where possible, the product line and finish.
Before using an unfamiliar cleaner, read the surface maker’s directions for both the cleaner and the way it may be used. Look for restrictions on ingredients, dilution, contact time, tools, and rinsing. If the instructions permit a cleaner but do not say how it behaves on your particular finish, Caesarstone advises testing it in an inconspicuous area first.
It helps to distinguish the kind of problem before choosing a response. Loose crumbs and ordinary food residue call for mild routine cleaning. A dried food or drink mark, limescale, or rust or metal mark may call for a different stain-specific procedure. Heat exposure and scratching are prevention issues rather than stains to scrub away. A cleaner that is appropriate for one category does not necessarily solve another safely.
For a dried or stubborn mark, begin by identifying what caused it if you can, then consult the brand’s stain-specific directions. Do not escalate automatically to a stronger product, abrasive pad, concentrated bleach, strong acid or alkali, or solvent. The correct treatment depends on both the stain and the surface. Cosentino, for example, publishes separate Silestone procedures for limescale, rust or metal marks, and food or drink stains; those methods are product-specific, not a universal quartz recipe.
If you cannot identify the mark, do not guess at its chemistry or combine products. Check the care page or contact the manufacturer or installer for the appropriate instructions. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a single stain-removal recipe for every engineered quartz surface, so a familiar home-cleaning trick may not be a safe substitute for product-specific directions.

| Caesarstone | Routine cleaning uses warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth or non-abrasive scourer, followed by rinsing and drying. Its page cautions against strong chemicals and solvents, including harsh oven or grill cleaners, floor strippers, paint removers, drain products, and products containing trichloroethane or methylene chloride. Rinse promptly after accidental exposure to a potentially damaging product. Natural, Honed, Concrete, and Rough finishes may need more cleaning than Polished finishes because everyday marks can show more. Caesarstone care instructions |
| Cosentino Silestone | Everyday care uses neutral soap and a damp microfiber cloth, with residue wiped off and the surface dried. The page describes separate treatments for limescale, rust or metal marks, and food or drink stains. It allows diluted bleach for a brief stain treatment followed by thorough rinsing, but warns that exposure lasting two hours or longer can damage the surface and may cause permanent staining. This bleach guidance is specific to Silestone. Silestone maintenance instructions |
| Cambria | Cambria says its products do not need sealing, polishing, or reconditioning. Its list of products not to use or expose to the surface includes bleach, oven cleaners, Comet, Soft Scrub, SOS pads, pumice products, paint removers, furniture strippers, and tarnish or silver cleaners. Cambria product care |
| MSI Q Quartz | MSI recommends using cutting boards and trivets or hot pads. Its cautions include drain cleaners, paint strippers, hydrofluoric acid, methylene chloride, trichloroethylene, and products with very high or low pH. MSI quartz care instructions |
The differences are practical, not merely wording. The brand and product line determine which care guide applies. Cleaner chemistry matters because manufacturers name specific prohibited products and ingredients. Exposure time also matters: Silestone’s page permits a limited stain treatment with diluted bleach but warns against prolonged exposure. Finish can affect how readily everyday marks show, as Caesarstone notes for several of its textured or honed finishes. Finally, the risk itself matters: a dried spill, chemical splash, sudden temperature change, and scratch each call for a different prevention or response step.
The practical takeaway is not to build a universal “safe cleaner” list from several brands’ pages. Use the guidance for your own surface. In particular, the Silestone bleach procedure does not override Cambria’s warning against bleach, and the fact that a cleaner is suitable for one manufacturer’s product does not establish that another manufacturer permits it.
What to do if a cleaner or chemical spills
If a product not intended for the countertop spills onto it, do not leave it in place while searching for a stain treatment. Caesarstone advises promptly rinsing accidental exposure to a potentially damaging product with plenty of water. Follow the installed surface’s own directions if you have them, and avoid rubbing the spill with an abrasive tool.
Product names alone may not tell you whether a cleaner is appropriate. Check the label and the countertop maker’s restrictions for ingredients and pH. The cautions from Caesarstone, Cambria, and MSI include products used for jobs around the home—such as drain cleaning, paint removal, or oven cleaning—that should not be treated as routine counter cleaners. Keep them away from the surface, and use a mild detergent for ordinary dirt instead.

For prevention, keep strong household products from being used or stored directly on the countertop. This is particularly relevant when cleaning an oven, unclogging a drain, stripping paint, or using a specialty metal cleaner: those products have purposes unrelated to routine counter care and are among the products manufacturers identify as risks for their surfaces. If exposure happens, prompt rinsing is safer than waiting to see whether a mark develops.

Can you use bleach on quartz?
There is no brand-neutral yes or no. Cosentino’s Silestone instructions allow diluted bleach for a short stain treatment with thorough rinsing, while warning that two hours or more of exposure can damage the surface and may cause permanent staining. Cambria lists bleach among the products not to use or expose to its surfaces. These directions apply to their respective products; they do not establish a universal bleach rule for engineered quartz.
Check the care page for your exact countertop before using bleach, including the permitted dilution, purpose, and contact time. If the instructions do not clearly approve the proposed use, do not improvise with bleach. A treatment that is allowed only briefly is not permission to leave the product on the surface or to use it as a general-purpose cleaner.
Do not infer that another brand allows bleach because Silestone does, or that a short treatment is suitable for routine cleanup. For everyday dirt, warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth remain the recommended starting point. If the countertop is Cambria, follow Cambria’s specific caution; if it is another brand, consult that brand’s own instructions rather than borrowing either example.
Can you put a hot pan on quartz?
Use a trivet or hot pad under hot cookware. Do not treat the word “heat-resistant” as a guarantee that a countertop can safely accept a hot pan. Cosentino says Silestone is heat-resistant but cautions that sudden temperature changes can affect it, as they can other stone materials; both Cosentino and Caesarstone recommend trivets or hot pads. The available guidance does not establish one temperature limit that applies to every quartz surface.
Make the protective step routine: set a trivet down before transferring cookware from the oven or stove, rather than relying on the counter to tolerate direct heat. A hot pad or trivet reduces the chance of exposing the surface to heat or a sudden temperature change, but it does not make the countertop damage-proof.
Because there is no universal temperature threshold in these manufacturer instructions, do not try to establish one by placing hot cookware directly on the surface. Treat the trivet as ordinary kitchen equipment, just as you would use a cutting board for food preparation. This simple habit avoids relying on an uncertain heat tolerance.

Prevent scratches and everyday wear
Use a cutting board for food preparation rather than cutting directly on the counter. MSI explicitly recommends cutting boards, and Caesarstone and MSI both advise protection for hot cookware. Removing loose crumbs with a cloth instead of scraping with a sharp object also avoids an unnecessary risk to the surface.
Pay attention to the finish as well as the material. Caesarstone notes that its Natural, Honed, Concrete, and Rough finishes may need more cleaning than Polished surfaces because everyday marks can be more visible. A mark that shows readily is not necessarily evidence that the surface needs a harsher cleaner; keep to the appropriate routine and check the brand’s instructions before changing tools or products.
These habits address different risks. A cutting board keeps food preparation off the countertop, while a trivet or hot pad separates hot cookware from the surface. Prompt wiping limits dried residue and the patina or limescale buildup Caesarstone warns about. None of these accessories makes the surface impervious to damage, and they are not substitutes for following the manufacturer’s care instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does quartz need sealing or polishing?
Do not assume every product needs the same maintenance treatment. Cambria states that its products do not need sealing, polishing, or reconditioning. That is useful guidance for Cambria surfaces, but it should not be expanded into a claim about every quartz countertop. Check the documentation for the surface you own before applying a sealer, polish, or reconditioning product.
Adding a treatment without manufacturer approval can introduce an unnecessary chemical exposure. If the surface looks different from when it was installed, identify the product and ask the maker or installer what care is appropriate instead of trying a restorative product at random.
In particular, do not apply a product simply because it is marketed for stone or because another countertop owner uses it. The care statements here are brand-specific, and some manufacturers explicitly restrict products that may be sold as cleaners or restorers. Confirm that the product is approved for your exact surface and use before applying it.

A quick routine to keep beside the sink
- Clear loose food and crumbs with a soft cloth; do not scrape the counter with a sharp object.
- Wipe ordinary dirt with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth. For Silestone, Cosentino specifies neutral soap and a damp microfiber cloth.
- Rinse with clean water, remove cleaner residue, and dry the surface.
- Wipe spills promptly. For a dried or stubborn mark, find the countertop’s brand and follow its stain-specific instructions.
- Use a cutting board for food preparation and a trivet or hot pad beneath hot cookware.
- Before using a stronger or unfamiliar product, confirm that the manufacturer permits it for your product and use; test inconspicuously if the maker advises it.
When in doubt, return to the mild routine rather than experimenting: warm water, mild detergent, a soft cloth, a clean-water rinse, and drying. A small amount of extra care—especially identifying the brand before treating a stubborn mark—can prevent an avoidable mismatch between the cleaner and the countertop.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you clean quartz countertops every day?
Remove crumbs with a soft cloth, then wipe with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth. Rinse with clean water and dry. For Silestone, Cosentino specifies neutral soap and a damp microfiber cloth.
How can I remove a stubborn stain from quartz?
Identify the countertop brand and the type of mark, then follow the manufacturer’s stain-specific instructions. Cosentino publishes separate Silestone directions for limescale, rust or metal marks, and food or drink stains; those methods should not be assumed safe for other quartz products.

Can you use bleach on quartz?
There is no universal answer. Cosentino allows diluted bleach for a brief Silestone stain treatment with thorough rinsing, but warns that exposure of two hours or longer can damage the surface and may cause permanent staining. Cambria lists bleach among products not to use or expose to its surfaces. Check your own countertop’s care guide.
Can you put a hot pan on quartz?
Use a trivet or hot pad. Caesarstone and Cosentino recommend this protection, and Cosentino cautions that sudden temperature changes can affect Silestone. Manufacturer guidance here does not establish one safe temperature limit for every quartz surface.
Does quartz need to be sealed or polished?
Care requirements depend on the manufacturer. Cambria says its products do not need sealing, polishing, or reconditioning, but that statement should not be generalized to every quartz countertop. Check your product’s documentation before applying a treatment.
What should I do if oven cleaner or another strong chemical gets on the counter?
Follow the care instructions for the installed surface and rinse accidental exposure promptly. Caesarstone advises rinsing a potentially damaging product with plenty of water. Avoid scrubbing with an abrasive tool, and do not leave the chemical in place while looking for a stain treatment.
