Clean a suppressor only by the method in its exact model’s manual. First unload the firearm and remove the suppressor; then use only the approved cleaner, tools, disassembly steps, and maintenance interval. Some suppressors are not meant to be taken apart, and there is no universal cleaning schedule.
Before cleaning: check the manual and make the firearm safe
Find the manual for the exact suppressor model, not just its manufacturer. Confirm whether it is user-serviceable, which cleaning products and tools are allowed, how it may be disassembled and reassembled, and when the maker recommends maintenance. A method approved for one model may be unsuitable for another.

- Unload and verify the firearm. Follow the firearm and suppressor manuals. Gemtech’s GM-22 manual directs users to ensure the firearm is unloaded and remove the suppressor before maintenance; it warns against cleaning or disassembling the suppressor while it is installed.
- Prepare a safe work area. Use the ventilation and protective equipment specified by the suppressor manual and cleaner label. Keep solvents away from open flames, and follow the cleaner’s handling and disposal instructions.
- Protect yourself from residue and solvents. Gemtech warns that a used GM-22 may contain substantial lead residue. Its manual calls for adequate ventilation, hand washing, and skin and eye protection when using organic solvents. Avoid contact with residue and solvent, and wash your hands thoroughly after handling.
Gemtech’s GM-22 manual states: “ONCE USED, SUPPRESSORS MAY CONTAIN A GREAT DEAL OF LEAD RESIDUE. ALWAYS HAVE ADEQUATE VENTILATION.” This warning is specific to the GM-22 manual, but it is a useful reason to take the exact model’s precautions seriously.

How to clean a suppressor whose manual permits owner maintenance
Use only the procedure the manufacturer provides for your model. If the manual permits disassembly and cleaning, follow its sequence and product restrictions rather than adapting instructions from another suppressor.
#1 Best Overall
- Complete Cleaning System: Includes everything you need to clean your suppressor effectively
- Carbon Debris Removal: Removes most carbon debris and build up from suppressors
- Versatile Compatibility: Suitable for rimfire and centerfire suppressors
- Simple Cleaning Process: Quick and easy cleaning process, soak, scrub, rinse, dry, lubricate
- Comprehensive Brush Set: AP Brushes (1 bronze, 1 nylon, 1 stainless steel) and nylon Baffle Cleaning Brush included to help scrub debris loosened during the soaking process
- Remove and inspect the suppressor. Make sure the firearm is unloaded and the suppressor is off it. Let the unit cool as directed by its manual before handling or cleaning.
- Use approved tools and cleaner. Gemtech recommends a nylon brush and non-marring picks for internal components on models where its instructions allow owner cleaning. Avoid aggressive metal scraping, which can damage components. Do not assume a cleaner is compatible because it is sold for firearms; verify it against the suppressor manual and the cleaner label.
- Do not force disassembly. Some models are not intended to be disassembled. If parts will not separate as instructed, or if you encounter damage or uncertainty, stop instead of applying more force or improvising a solvent or tool.
- Reassemble exactly as directed. Use the model’s manual for the reassembly procedure. If the manual does not resolve a question, contact the manufacturer or an appropriately qualified service provider.
When does a suppressor need cleaning?
There is no generally applicable interval established by the manufacturer guidance cited here. Some suppressors may not need routine cleaning, while others have a specific schedule. Follow the instruction for your model and its use conditions.
| Suppressor or guidance | Manufacturer’s stated interval | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| SilencerCo Octane 9 (SilencerCo article, September 15, 2023) | Disassemble and clean at 500 rounds or whenever it is shot “wet.” | This is Octane 9 guidance only. SilencerCo also says not all suppressors need cleaning. |
| Maxim Defense MS-9 (2026 manual) | Clean every 500 rounds fired. | This is specific to the MS-9; it does not establish an industry-wide schedule. |
Do not combine these examples into a single rule for all suppressors. If your manual gives no interval, ask the manufacturer what maintenance it recommends for your model rather than borrowing another maker’s schedule.

When to stop and ask the manufacturer
Stop work if the suppressor is sealed or not user-serviceable, the manual does not authorize the cleaning method you are considering, parts are stuck, or anything appears damaged. Do not force a cap or component off, scrape aggressively, or try an unapproved cleaner. The cited manuals do not establish a universal owner repair procedure; the manufacturer can advise whether the unit needs service.

Cleaning instructions do not authorize repair or modification. ATF’s rules-library listing for an August 2026 open letter, published or revised September 8, 2026, says a complete silencer may be repaired or have its caliber changed without being treated as a new making under the National Firearms Act only when specified conditions are met. The listing says the work must not destroy the serialized “frame or receiver,” remove, obliterate, or alter required markings, or make a new firearm. This is narrow federal guidance, not general permission for owners to modify a suppressor.

ATF’s federal Q&A describes silencers as NFA weapons and says an individual wishing to manufacture or transfer one must receive prior approval and pay the required tax. Federal guidance does not settle state or local requirements; check the laws that apply where you live and consult the manufacturer before repair or caliber-change work.
