After using a portable carpet cleaner, switch it off, empty and clean the recovery tank, and rinse removable parts only as your model’s manual directs. If you’re asking, “How do I clean my portable carpet cleaner after each use?”, the safe answer is a short routine tailored to your machine—not one universal hose-flushing or tank-drying method.
After-use cleaning routine
- Turn the machine off. Follow the owner’s manual for whether and when to unplug it before maintenance. Do not open or service a powered machine.
- Empty the dirty-water tank promptly. Remove it as directed and pour the contents into an appropriate drain. Do not let the water rise above the tank’s marked FULL line. BISSELL’s instructions for the listed SpotClean and Little Green ProHeat models say to empty and clean the tank after cleaning or when it is full.
- Rinse the tank and removable parts as directed. Clean debris from the recovery tank and, if your model has one, its removable float stack. Check the manual for which parts can be rinsed and how they should be reassembled.
- Clean the tool and hose using the model’s procedure. Some machines have a dedicated hose-rinse feature; others specify a different method. Do not run water through a hose unless your manual instructs you to.
- Check the clean-water tank instructions. The reviewed manufacturer guidance does not establish one rule for every model about whether unused solution must be emptied. Follow your manual rather than assuming the tank should always be emptied or left filled.
- Dry and store the machine as directed. Let parts dry for as long as and in the way your manual specifies, then reassemble when appropriate. Store the cleaner somewhere protected, and do not force, sharply bend, or obstruct its hose. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not set a universal drying time.

What varies by model
SpotClean and Little Green ProHeat models
BISSELL’s getting-started page covers models 2459, 2513, 2694, 5207, 6119, 7786, 9749, and 3500. Its post-use guidance calls for emptying and cleaning the dirty-water tank and removing and cleaning the float stack to clear loose debris. These steps apply to the listed models; check the manual for other machines.
For those listed ProHeat models, BISSELL specifies warm tap water no hotter than 140°F (60°C). The page warns that hotter water can deform the tank and affect performance. Treat this as a limit for the models on that page, not a universal setting for portable cleaners.

Big Green Pet Pro models
For models 3288, 32886, and 3232, BISSELL instructs owners to rinse both sections of the dirty-water tank and let the tank dry fully before reassembly. Its procedure also calls for removing the tool and rinsing it under warm water, then detaching the hose and running water through both ends. Use those steps only if they match your model’s manual.
Rug Doctor Portable Spot Cleaner
Rug Doctor warns against using boiled or microwaved water in its Portable Spot Cleaner. Its support guidance also calls for checking the textile’s care label, testing in a hidden area, and using the cleaner on items marked W or W/S; it advises against using this machine on S, X, or Dry Clean Only items. Follow the textile maker’s care directions and your own machine’s instructions if they differ. See Rug Doctor’s Portable Spot Cleaner support page.

Water, formula, and fabric cautions
- Do not assume one water temperature works for every cleaner. The 140°F (60°C) maximum applies to the listed BISSELL ProHeat models; Rug Doctor separately warns against boiled or microwaved water for its Portable Spot Cleaner.
- Use a formula approved for your machine. BISSELL identifies compatible BISSELL portable-cleaner formulas for the ProHeat models on its support page. Check your own manual before using any detergent or cleaning solution.
- Avoid unsupported household chemicals. The cited instructions do not establish vinegar, bleach, dish soap, or other household products as suitable for these machines. Do not add them unless your manufacturer specifically approves them.
- Check fabric compatibility before cleaning upholstery or rugs. Follow the textile care label and the cleaner’s manual; test the recommended solution in a hidden spot when instructed.
When the cleaner still seems dirty or is not working normally
Look first for visible debris in the recovery tank, float stack, or removable tool, and clean those parts using the manual’s method. If a tank, seal, cap, or nozzle is damaged or missing, identify the exact model before seeking a replacement part; replacement components are not routine cleaning supplies. Do not compensate for a blockage by forcing water through a hose or taking apart components the manual does not identify as user-removable.
