How to Clean and Descale a De’Longhi Coffee Maker

De’Longhi descaling steps vary by model. Follow the machine’s alert and manual for the right descaler, tank fill, container size, cycle, and rinses.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a De’Longhi coffee maker, follow the descaling alert and the instructions for your exact model. Most automatic machines guide you through emptying the drip tray and grounds container, preparing descaler and water in the tank, collecting the liquid as it runs through the machine, and completing the requested rinses. Buttons, quantities, container size, and cycle steps vary, so do not treat one model’s procedure as universal.

What you need before you start

  • Your machine’s model-specific instruction manual and, if applicable, its on-screen descaling prompt. De’Longhi says procedures and water-hardness settings vary by machine; its general descaling guide also advises checking the manual before starting.
  • The descaler specified by the manual. De’Longhi’s guidance recommends its own descaler, such as EcoDecalk; check the bottle label and your machine instructions for the correct amount. Do not assume that every model uses the same dose.
  • A container large enough for your model’s cycle, plus access to a sink for emptying and rinsing removable parts.

De’Longhi’s illustrated general process uses 100 ml of EcoDecalk at tank level A and calls for a collection container holding at least 2 L. Those are specifications for that example, not universal requirements. For comparison, the Rivelia manual recommends a 1.5 L container. Use the capacity and tank markings given for your machine.

How to descale a De’Longhi coffee maker

Use the machine’s guided cycle where available. The sequence below describes the common preparation, not a substitute for model-specific directions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start when indicated. Begin when the machine displays a descaling alert or when its manual says descaling is due. Find the precise start control in the manual; menus and button sequences differ.
  2. Prepare the machine. Empty the drip tray and grounds container if the instructions call for it. Remove the water filter if the manual directs you to. Empty the tank.
  3. Prepare the solution. Add the specified descaler to the tank, then add water to the level stated in the manual. Follow the product label as well as the machine instructions; do not transfer another model’s dose or fill marks to yours.
  4. Position the collection container and fittings. Put a suitably sized container under the outlets identified by the manual. Some milk-carafe models require a water spout to be attached. A manual frother wand may need no extra preparation for the descaling cycle.
  5. Run the guided cycle. Start descaling using the model’s menu or control-panel instructions. Let the cycle proceed as directed rather than interrupting it or improvising with the controls.
  6. Complete every rinse the machine requests. Empty and refill the tank as instructed, and allow all rinse stages to finish. Follow the manual for replacing the filter, if applicable.

The general De’Longhi guide says its illustrated process may take 30–50 minutes, depending on the model. The Rivelia manual describes an approximately 30-minute cycle. These are model-specific examples, not a timing promise for every De’Longhi machine. The general guide, Eletta Explore help-center procedure, Linea Classic FAQ, and Rivelia manual show why the exact controls and setup must come from your own model’s instructions.

  • 15 MONTH SUPPLY. The frequency of use of the machine determines the limescale build up - for an average household it is suggested to descale approximately every 3 months.

What descaler should you use? Can you use vinegar?

De’Longhi recommends its own descaler and explicitly advises against vinegar in its fully automatic coffee machine cleaning FAQ: “Use the DeLonghi descaler and never vinegar!” Its broader guidance also warns about vinegar’s odor and possible effects on components. This is the manufacturer’s advice; check your model manual for the approved product and procedure rather than assuming a different formula is suitable.

How often should you descale?

There is no single interval that applies to every De’Longhi machine. The manufacturer says frequency depends on water hardness and how often you brew. Follow the machine’s alert and, where supported, set water hardness accurately in the machine settings. A compatible water filter may help slow limescale formation on models that support one.

De’Longhi describes possible effects of limescale buildup as slower heating or brewing, changes to crema or coffee flavor, and potential blockages or malfunctions. These are manufacturer-described effects; no numerical estimate of risk is given in the cited guidance. Consult the machine’s manual if you notice a problem rather than treating symptoms alone as proof that descaling is due.

Descaling is not the same as routine cleaning

Descaling addresses limescale inside the water circuit. Coffee grounds, milk residue, and surface spills need their own cleaning routines; descaling does not replace them.

Milk carafes and steam wands

Clean milk-contact parts promptly after use. De’Longhi’s UK care guide recommends using the carafe’s clean function or the machine’s cleaning button. For a steam wand, wipe it with a damp cloth and briefly release steam after use. Separate and clean carafe or wand parts regularly as the model manual directs; dishwasher suitability varies by part and machine.

Removable brew units

For fully automatic models with a removable brew unit, the UK care guide says to remove and rinse it under warm water monthly, let it dry, and avoid detergent or solvent. Confirm your manual’s removal and cleaning instructions before handling the unit.

For milk residue, De’Longhi also identifies Eco MultiClean as a separate cleaning product. It is not a descaler and does not belong in the tank for the descaling cycle.

When to check the manual or contact support

Stop and check the exact instructions if the menu labels, tank markings, outlets, or filter setup do not match the procedure you expected, or if the machine does not complete its guided cycle. De’Longhi warns in the Rivelia manual that an unsuitable descaler or incorrect descaling may result in faults not covered by the manufacturer’s guarantee. That warning is specific to its manual; consult the warranty terms for your model and region.
