Clean a bean-to-cup espresso machine in separate steps: empty and wash the removable parts, rinse the brew group if the model allows it, clean the milk path after milk drinks, and descale the internal water circuit when the machine prompts or its manual directs. Follow the exact model’s instructions for products, intervals, and menu steps; a general recipe is not a substitute for its guided cycle.
What routine cleaning covers
A rinse or automatic cleaning prompt does not necessarily clean every part. Grounds, coffee oils, milk residue, and mineral scale collect in different places, so treat each task separately and check the owner’s manual before removing or washing components.

- Drip tray and grounds container: Empty and wash as the machine’s instructions specify. Philips says to empty the drip tray daily or when its indicator rises, and to empty the grounds container when prompted on the models covered by its guidance.
- Brew group: If it is removable, follow the manual’s removal and rinsing instructions. Philips recommends rinsing the brew group weekly with lukewarm water for the models covered by its support page.
- Water tank: Philips recommends cleaning and rinsing it weekly for the models covered by its instructions.
- Milk system: Run the machine’s post-drink rinse or cleaning prompt and clean removable milk-contact parts as directed. Milk routines differ by configuration and model.
- Exterior: Wipe spills with a soft, damp cloth. This housekeeping does not replace internal cleaning or descaling.
Do not assume every removable-looking part is dishwasher-safe, or that a component can be immersed. Confirm the approved cleaning method before disassembly; the instructions for one model do not establish a safe method for all machines.

Run the milk rinse promptly
Use the machine’s post-drink rinse or cleaning prompt when available. Philips says a cleaning icon appears after brewing on most of its espresso machines. For its carafe guidance, Philips calls for rinsing the tube and top daily. Follow the procedure for your milk-system design rather than applying carafe instructions to a different attachment.

Empty parts and clean visible residue
Empty the drip tray daily or when its indicator rises on the Philips models covered by its support instructions. Empty the grounds container when the machine prompts. Wipe visible exterior spills with a soft, damp cloth.
Give milk-contact parts their own schedule
Philips describes different post-use, daily, weekly, and monthly tasks for its milk-system configurations. JURA recommends daily milk-system cleaning for the IMPRESSA X9 when it is used to make milk drinks. Those are manufacturer instructions for the named systems, not a universal schedule for every bean-to-cup machine.

Weekly, monthly, and less frequent maintenance
Weekly: rinse and wash the specified parts
For the Philips models covered by its US support guidance, rinse the brew group weekly with lukewarm water, clean the grounds container weekly, and clean and rinse the water tank weekly. Philips also says to disassemble its milk carafe weekly and wash its parts in lukewarm water. Check your own manual for the applicable parts and method.
Monthly: clean coffee oils and milk circuits when specified
Philips specifies Coffee Oil Remover tablets CA6704 monthly for the brew-group filter on the covered models. For the classic milk frother and milk-carafe configurations described on its support page, Philips specifies milk circuit cleaner CA6705 monthly. Do not assume these consumables or intervals apply to other makes or models.

Every two months: lubricate only as directed
Philips recommends lubricating the brew group every two months for the models covered by its instructions. Its guidance describes applying a thin layer at the piston, shaft, and rails. Use the lubricant and locations specified for your machine; these details are model-specific.
When and how to descale
Use the prompt or the model’s stated interval
Start when the machine prompts you or when its manual directs. The schedule can depend on water hardness and filtration, so there is no single interval supported for all bean-to-cup machines. De’Longhi recommends descaling its pump espresso machines after 200 uses while noting that frequency depends on local water hardness; this is not a universal bean-to-cup recommendation.

- UNIVERSALLY COMPATIBLE DESCALER - This product can be used to descale Keurig machines, as well as Nespresso, Breville, Jura, Delonghi and other drip coffee makers, espresso machines, superautomatics, and kettles
- BETTER THAN VINEGAR - This descaler is more effective at removing limescale than vinegar, works faster than vinegar, and is odorless
- MAINTAIN YOUR COFFEE EQUIPMENT - Descaling extends the lifespan of your machine, helping to prevent damage to heating elements, corrosion, and component malfunctions
- DRINK BETTER TASTING COFFEE - Descaling removes limescale buildup from your coffee maker; if not removed, scale prevents machines from reaching optimal water temperatures
- EASY TO USE - Powder format is ease to dose. Use 1 oz of descaling powder per 32 oz of capacity in your machine's water reservoir
Prepare the machine exactly as instructed
Follow the on-screen menu and manual for the correct descaler, quantity, and fill level. In the Philips procedures reviewed, the milk attachment is removed where applicable and the AquaClean filter is removed before descaling. The Canadian Philips support page separates instructions by machine family, so use the section for your series rather than borrowing another model’s steps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRun the full guided cycle
- Set up the machine as its prompt directs, including removing attachments or filters when specified.
- Add the approved descaler to the marked level or in the quantity stated in the manual.
- Place a sufficiently large vessel under the outlets named by the instructions.
- Start the guided descaling program and let it run as directed. Do not refill the tank early if the program expects it to empty.
- Rinse the water tank and complete the machine’s fresh-water rinse phase.
- Refit or replace the filter and clean the brew group or milk components afterward only if the manual instructs you to do so.
For Philips 4300, 4400, 5400, and 5500 procedures, Philips estimates about 30 minutes for descaling and rinsing. On the JURA IMPRESSA X9, JURA warns that premature refilling or excess liquid can leave the descaling prompt active. Let the program finish its prescribed sequence rather than improvising around it.

Which descaler should you use?
Use the descaler and cleaning products approved for your exact model. Do not treat one manufacturer’s warning as a rule for every machine: Philips’ Canadian support page says, in its 5000-series section, to use Philips descaler only and not products containing sulfuric, hydrochloric, sulfamic, or acetic acid (vinegar), warning that these can damage the covered machine and void its warranty. For another brand or series, check that model’s manual before using vinegar or any other descaling product.
The same model-specific rule applies to coffee-oil tablets, milk-circuit cleaner, and water filters. For example, Philips names CA6704 tablets and CA6705 milk circuit cleaner for the configurations covered by its maintenance instructions; their mention is not evidence of compatibility with other machines.
Why schedules differ by machine
Maintenance depends on the machine’s design and how it tracks use. Check the manual for whether the brew group is removable and rinsed by hand, how the milk circuit is cleaned, what prompts or counters trigger service, how water hardness and filtration affect descaling, and which branded consumables are specified.
For a sense of how model-specific prompts can be, JURA’s IMPRESSA X9 support guidance gives a coffee-cleaning example after 220 draw-off operations or 80 switch-on rinses, with a program of about 15 minutes; its milk-cleaning program is about two minutes. These thresholds and timings apply to that named model, not to bean-to-cup machines generally.
