Routine cleaning is usually enough: the CDC says soap-and-water cleaning removes most germs from surfaces and home disinfection is generally unnecessary unless someone is sick or recently visited while sick.
Clean the bin with soap and water first
- Empty it. Remove the bag and any loose rubbish. Lift out stuck-on food or other residue.
- Wash and scrub. Use soap or household detergent and water on the inside and outside. Scrub grime with a suitable household brush. The CDC describes cleaning as using soap, water, and scrubbing to remove dirt and impurities. CDC: When and How to Clean and Disinfect Your Home
- Rinse and dry. Rinse away loosened dirt and cleaner, then let the bin drain and dry fully before adding a new liner. This helps avoid trapping wash water in the bin.
If the bin still smells
Start by checking for residue in corners, around the rim, or beneath the liner, then wash and rinse those areas again. If odor remains, use a deodorizing product only when its label specifically permits garbage-can use and the bin maker says it is compatible with the bin material.

Bleach directions are product-specific, not interchangeable. For example, an EPA-hosted label for one 8.25% bleach product directs users to wash and rinse first, then brush the inside with its solution, empty the bin, and let it drain. That label specifies 1/2 cup of that product per gallon of water for garbage-can deodorizing. EPA-hosted label, EPA Reg. No. 084697-00002 Another EPA-hosted product label gives a different dilution and directs users to wait two minutes and rinse. EPA-hosted product label These are examples for particular products, not a universal bleach formula. Check current packaging and follow the exact label and bin manufacturer’s instructions.

When disinfection is appropriate
For ordinary household cleaning, disinfection is usually not needed. The CDC says cleaning alone with soap and water is sufficient in most situations; disinfection at home is generally unnecessary unless someone is sick or recently visited while sick. If illness or a specific contamination concern makes disinfection appropriate, clean visible dirt first, then use a product labeled for the surface and purpose. Keep the surface wet for the contact time stated on that product’s label. CDC: About Household Cleaning and Disinfecting
Bleach and cleaner safety
- Never mix bleach or any disinfectant with other cleaners or disinfectants; dangerous vapors can result.
- Follow the product label for dilution, use, contact time, rinsing, and any protective equipment. Provide ventilation when using a product indoors.
- Check that the label and bin manufacturer’s instructions allow the product on the bin material.
- CDC fallback dilution guidance applies only when bottle directions are unavailable and the product is regular, unscented household bleach containing 5%–9% sodium hypochlorite: 5 tablespoons (1/3 cup) per gallon of room-temperature water. Routine cleaning versus odor treatment
