Start with the tracker’s status in your torrent client, then compare the same tracker on another authorized network. A timeout, “unreachable” message, or successful test over a different connection can help narrow down the cause, but none alone proves that the tracker is globally down or that your ISP blocked it.
Check the tracker status in your torrent client
- Open the affected torrent’s tracker list or tracker-status view.
- Record the tracker URL, including whether it uses UDP, HTTP, or HTTPS, along with the exact status message and the time you saw it.
- Check whether the client reports a failed announce, a skipped announce, or another error. Treat this as a report about an attempt from your device and connection, not as a global status check.
For example, libtorrent documents an announce_skipped alert as an announce skipped because the client assumes the tracker is unreachable over the selected source network interface. That describes the client’s decision for that route; it does not establish that the tracker is down for everyone. See the libtorrent alerts reference and error-code reference.

Make sure the tracker is the problem
A stalled torrent does not necessarily mean its tracker is unreachable. Check whether the torrent has peers and whether other torrents are progressing. BitTorrent support lists low peer availability, network blocking, an unavailable download location, and write failures as separate reasons a torrent can stop progressing. Its support article explains: “A torrent can stop progressing when there are not enough peers, the network is blocked, the download location is unavailable, or the torrent data cannot be written.” BitTorrent: My torrent is stuck at 0% or a certain percentage.

If the tracker announces successfully but the torrent has few or no peers, the bottleneck may be peer availability rather than tracker reachability. If the client reports a disk, location, or write error, investigate that separately.

Compare the same tracker on another network
- Keep the tracker URL and protocol the same. If possible, use the same device and client so you change only the network path.
- Try the normal connection, then a different network you are authorized to use, such as a trusted mobile connection.
- Record the result and repeat the comparison later if the failure is intermittent.
If the tracker works on one connection but not another, the problem appears to follow the network path. Differences in DNS, firewall rules, routing, or traffic filtering may be relevant, but the comparison does not identify who caused the difference or prove intentional ISP blocking. BitTorrent’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance also recommends trying another network to help determine whether the issue is connection-specific.
Interpret the exact error message
- DNS failure: The hostname did not resolve successfully for that attempt. This points to a name-resolution problem somewhere in the attempted path; it does not show whether the tracker server itself is operating.
- Connection refused: The attempt was rejected. This differs from a timeout, but the message alone does not reveal whether the destination service, an intermediary, or a local policy caused it.
- Timeout or “network unreachable”: The client did not complete the connection over its attempted path. Check the tracker protocol and compare another network before assigning a cause.
- HTTP server error: An HTTP response indicates a different failure class from DNS resolution. A server or intermediary response may be involved.
- “Skipping tracker announce (unreachable)” or similar: This may describe the client skipping an announce it assumes cannot reach the tracker over the selected interface, rather than a confirmed tracker-wide outage.
- Certificate error: Verify the tracker URL and the client’s or device’s certificate configuration. Do not routinely disable HTTPS certificate validation as a workaround.
Google’s general URL unreachable errors guidance distinguishes DNS problems, connection refusals, and server-side errors. It is not specific to BitTorrent, but the distinction is useful when reading a client’s message.

Use an external tracker checker as a second opinion
An external checker probes from its own infrastructure, not through your device, resolver, firewall, VPN, or internet connection. A successful result can suggest that the tracker responds from that separate vantage point, but cannot show that it is reachable from your network.

Check whether the tool supports the tracker’s protocol before relying on it. A browser-based check may not be equivalent to testing a UDP tracker. TorrentTrackersList’s Tracker Checker says it supports UDP, HTTP, HTTPS, and WSS and reports an update date of June 20, 2026; those are the tool’s own claims, and its capabilities or results may change.

Check device and client settings if the issue stays local
If the same network works from another device, or only one client has trouble, review the client’s tracker message and relevant firewall or network settings. The TorrentBD tracker troubleshooting FAQ lists certificate validation, incoming-port settings, and firewalls among possible checks. Those suggestions are specific to that tracker operator, not universal fixes for every client or tracker.
A VPN or other route that changes the result is useful evidence that the path matters. It does not prove that your ISP intentionally blocked the tracker: DNS, routing, filtering, or other network differences could also explain the change. Avoid disabling security controls broadly; adjust only a setting you understand and can restore.

State what the checks actually establish
There is no universal retry count or definitive threshold for declaring a tracker down. Base your conclusion on the tracker URL and protocol, the client’s exact message, comparisons across devices or authorized networks, and observations over time.

- If checks fail across the device’s available paths and an independent checker also fails, the tracker may be unavailable more broadly, but the observations do not prove a global outage.
- If the tracker works on another authorized network but repeatedly fails on your usual connection, describe the issue as following that connection. The tests do not establish whether the cause is your ISP, router, DNS resolver, firewall, or another part of the path.
- If only one device or client fails, focus first on its client configuration and local network controls.
- If announces succeed but a torrent remains stalled, investigate peer availability, storage location, or write errors instead of assuming a tracker outage.
