For routine fingerprints on the iPhone Duo’s folding inner display, use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth and wipe gently while the display is dry. Don’t scrub, spray cleaner onto the screen, peel up the cover layer, or assume advice for other Apple displays applies to the Duo. If the layer looks damaged or unusually worn, ask Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider about inspection and service.
A safe routine for everyday fingerprints
- Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Apple’s general cleaning guidance recommends a soft cloth; for an ordinary fingerprint, a dry wipe is the most cautious starting point. Apple’s general product-cleaning guidance and its iPhone cleaning guidance provide this baseline, rather than a Duo-specific cleaning procedure.
- Wipe lightly. Avoid pressing hard or scrubbing the folding display. If a gentle dry wipe does not remove a mark, don’t escalate to a solvent or a more abrasive material on the assumption that another Apple display’s directions apply.
- Keep liquid away from openings. Don’t spray cleaner directly onto the screen. Apple’s general advice is to avoid direct sprays and keep moisture away from openings.
What Apple’s guidance does—and doesn’t—confirm for the Duo
Apple’s general device-care advice supports a soft, lint-free cloth, gentle wiping, and care around moisture. The cited iPhone and general cleaning pages do not provide a dedicated cleaning method for the Duo’s folding inner layer.

Apple has separate instructions for certain nano-texture displays. Those name Studio Display, Pro Display XDR, iMac, MacBook Pro, and M4 iPad Pro; they call for the supplied polishing cloth and allow 70% isopropyl alcohol on that cloth for infrequent, difficult smudges. Apple’s nano-texture cleaning instructions do not name iPhone Duo, so those steps should not be treated as approved for its inner display.

- Do not use paper towels, abrasive cloths, or gritty material on the display.
- Do not spray cleaner onto the screen.
- Do not assume the nano-texture instructions, including the alcohol method, are suitable for the Duo.
“Replaceable” does not mean owner-removable
In an interview, Apple vice president of hardware engineering Kate Bergeron said the Duo has a cover layer over its matte display coating and that the layer is replaceable. She also described the coating as helping minimize the crease. The statement was reported in October 2026; it is not a published owner replacement procedure. It does not establish that owners should peel the layer off themselves or that a retail replacement layer is available. MacRumors’ report on the interview and 9to5Mac’s report describe the claim.

Don’t lift or peel the layer, or apply a third-party film to the inner display based on that interview. If the layer is visibly damaged or unusually worn, ask Apple or an authorized provider to inspect it rather than attempting a repair yourself.
Service options and the reported replacement fee

MacRumors and 9to5Mac reported in October 2026 that Apple’s U.S. AppleCare+ service listing showed a $19 cover-layer replacement fee. That is a reported U.S. AppleCare+ price, not a universal quote; the uncovered price was not disclosed in the reporting. Apple’s service page does not expose a fixed Duo price in its accessible listing, so confirm costs and eligibility with Apple or an authorized provider before arranging service.
