How do you clean over-ear headphones safely?
- Check the model instructions. Turn the headphones off if applicable. Consult the official manual or support page before using moisture or removing cushions; Sennheiser specifically advises checking product documentation for special instructions.
- Remove loose dust and skin oils. Wipe accessible surfaces gently with a clean, soft, dry cloth. Apple’s Beats guidance specifies a dry cleaning cloth for ear cups and ear-cup mesh.
- Use moisture only where the manufacturer allows it. If the manual approves a damp cloth or wipe for a particular surface, use only that method and keep it barely damp. Do not assume a cleaner approved for one part—or one brand—will be safe on another.
- Keep openings and inner screens dry. Avoid wetting ear-cup mesh, inner screens, charging ports, buttons, and other openings. Do not rinse, soak, or pour water over the headphones, and do not push a brush, tweezers, or other tool into the housing.
- Dry before storing or charging. Wipe away sweat and moisture, then leave the headphones to air-dry fully at room temperature. Do not connect a charger while moisture remains.
A soft microfiber or other clean, dry cloth is a useful basic tool. A soft-bristled brush may help with accessible residue around buttons or ports if the manufacturer permits it, but keep the bristles outside openings.

These differences are why “use a little alcohol” or “use a damp cloth” should never be treated as universal advice. Even when a manufacturer permits moisture, apply it only to the specified surface and do not let it run into seams or openings.

How should you clean ear cushions, mesh, and the headband?
Ear cups and mesh
Use a dry cloth unless the exact model’s instructions say otherwise. Mesh and inner screens are close to sensitive components and can retain moisture. Apple’s Beats instructions specifically call for a dry cloth on ear cups and mesh; Bose says to keep its products’ inner screen dry.
Cushions and leather surfaces
Do not remove cushions unless the manufacturer explains how. If removal is approved, follow the model’s procedure and keep liquid away from the exposed speaker area. Cushion materials vary: Bose permits a lightly damp, soapy cloth for cushions on products covered by its guide, while Sennheiser’s general advice is dry-cloth cleaning. Its M3 manual gives a limited exception for leather parts, allowing a water-dampened soft cloth while ruling out polish, detergents, and harsh soaps.

Headband cushions, sliders, and exterior plastic
Clean only according to the material-specific instructions. Apple permits a damp soapy cloth on Beats headband cushions and sliders, but not on ear cups or mesh. Bose permits a small amount of rubbing alcohol on the plastic exterior covered by its guide; that does not make alcohol suitable for cushions, mesh, or other headphones.

How often should you clean wireless headphones?
Bose recommends wiping headphones at least once a week, especially after workouts. That is Bose’s recommendation, not a universal schedule established for every brand or model. Wipe away sweat promptly, and clean more often when use or visible buildup makes it appropriate, while following the product’s care instructions.

Can you charge headphones after they get sweaty?
Not until they are fully dry. Wipe away sweat and leave the headphones to dry completely at room temperature before charging. Sony warns that charging while moisture is present can cause malfunctions. Keep moisture away from the charging port as well as the ear cups and controls.

Worn cushions can affect comfort and, as Bose notes, the acoustic seal. Sennheiser describes earpads as replaceable for hygiene and notes that spare pads are available through a Sennheiser partner.

Match replacement cushions to the exact headphone model. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions, including how to handle any retaining rings or scrims; an incorrectly fitted or incompatible cushion may not sit or seal as intended. How should you store over-ear wireless headphones?
