Clean the keyboard’s surfaces

Apple does not instruct users to rinse, soak, scrub, or saturate the keyboard. A cloth that is merely damp enough to wipe the surfaces follows the stated method more closely than one that leaves visible liquid behind. Avoid treating this like a washable cover: the keyboard should not be put in water or another cleaning agent.

So a rough or scratchy material, a paper towel, or forceful repeated rubbing is not a better way to remove marks. The guidance specifically names the front and inside. That tells you which broad areas to wipe, but it is not permission to push moisture into seams or openings. Keep the cloth only slightly damp, take care around openings, and do not spray the keyboard. Apple’s general guidance says not to spray a cleaning product directly onto an item; the product-specific cloth method avoids that step altogether.

If you want to disinfect, Apple names two wipe options: a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. Those are specific allowances for this keyboard, not an open-ended approval for any alcohol product, disinfectant, household wipe, or cleaning solution. Do not infer that a different concentration or a product with a similar label is interchangeable.
In either case, the moisture precautions remain important. Apple permits the named products as wipes, but does not say to spray or pour them onto the keyboard. Clean the Smart Connector if the keyboard will not connect

If the connection problem continues after cleaning, follow Apple’s troubleshooting guidance rather than applying liquid or a different cleaning product to the connector.

For this step, the described tool is a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not substitute a liquid cleaner or spray at the connector. The instruction is to clean it with the cloth; it does not call for inserting anything into the connector or using an abrasive tool. If the keyboard still fails to connect or respond after this cleaning, move on to Apple’s broader connection troubleshooting guidance. Products and methods to avoid
Apple says not to use these on the Magic Keyboard:

Avoid improvising with a stronger cleaner because a mark remains visible. The listed alternatives are not a ladder of increasingly powerful products: Apple does not recommend trying a household cleaner, solvent, abrasive, or hydrogen peroxide cleaner after the cloth method. Stay with the permitted approach, and do not introduce a product Apple says to avoid.
Prevent avoidable wear and color transfer
Apple warns that prolonged contact with other materials can cause color transfer. Its guidance does not identify particular materials, colors, or a specific contact duration, so avoid leaving the keyboard pressed against other materials for extended periods rather than assuming a particular combination is safe.
This is a care precaution, not a list of known problem pairings. Apple does not specify which materials create the risk, how long “prolonged” means, or which colors are most likely to transfer. It would therefore be misleading to promise that a particular fabric, case, or color is safe—or to claim that a brief contact will always cause a mark. The practical takeaway is simply to avoid prolonged contact with other materials where possible.

Keep the instructions specific to this accessory
This guidance is for the iPad Magic Keyboard. Apple also makes keyboards and keyboard cases with different designs, including the Magic Keyboard Folio and Mac Magic Keyboard; do not assume their material-specific cleaning instructions are identical. Check the instructions for the exact accessory you own.
The name “Magic Keyboard” appears on more than one Apple product, and the iPad Magic Keyboard is not the same item as Apple’s Mac Magic Keyboard. The guidance here is specific to the iPad accessory. It should not be treated as a universal cleaning rule for the Magic Keyboard Folio, a Smart Keyboard, a Smart Keyboard Folio, or another keyboard case. Use the instructions for the exact model rather than transferring a product-specific permission based only on a similar name.
What to have on hand
A soft, lint-free cloth is the basic item needed for the routine cleaning method and the Smart Connector troubleshooting step. A soft lint-free microfiber cloth is a suitable generic option, but Apple does not require a special branded cloth or a dedicated Magic Keyboard cleaning accessory. The key qualities are that the cloth is soft and lint-free; for routine surface cleaning, make it only slightly damp.
