Turn the slow cooker off, unplug it, and let the removable ceramic or stoneware insert cool before cleaning. Wash it in hot, soapy water, or use a dishwasher only if the instructions for your exact model allow it. Keep the electrical heating base out of water.
How to clean a slow cooker’s ceramic insert
- Switch off and unplug the cooker. Let the insert and lid cool before handling or washing them. Crock-Pot and Hamilton Beach both give this advice in their care guidance: Crock-Pot cleaning FAQ and Hamilton Beach use-and-care manual.
- Wash the insert gently. Use hot, soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge. For stuck-on food, Crock-Pot says a cloth, sponge, or rubber spatula will usually remove residue. Avoid abrasive cleaning compounds and scouring pads, which can scratch the surface. See Crock-Pot’s cleaning guidance.
- Rinse and dry it. Once the food residue is gone, rinse the insert and dry it before putting it back in the cooker.
Can the ceramic insert go in the dishwasher?
It depends on the cooker model. Crock-Pot says its removable stoneware can be washed in a dishwasher or in hot, soapy water. Hamilton Beach’s FAQ and the cited manual also allow dishwasher cleaning for the crock and lid they cover, but the FAQ warns that a SANI cycle can damage applicable products. Check your own model’s manual for dishwasher permission and any excluded cycles; instructions for one model do not establish what is safe for another. See the Crock-Pot FAQ, Hamilton Beach FAQ, and Hamilton Beach manual.

How to avoid thermal shock
Let hot stoneware cool before washing it, and do not place it straight into cold water or onto a wet surface. Crock-Pot cautions: “As with any fine ceramic, the stoneware and lid will not withstand sudden temperature changes.” This is why it is safer to wait for the insert to cool rather than trying to speed-clean it while hot. How to remove water spots or stains
For spots or stains that remain after ordinary washing, Crock-Pot suggests a non-abrasive cleaner or vinegar. Apply it gently with a soft cloth or sponge, and avoid scouring pads or abrasive compounds. Crock-Pot cleaning FAQ
