Wash your reusable water bottle and its removable parts regularly with soap and water, scrub the areas you can reach, rinse well, and let every part dry completely before putting it away. Check the bottle maker’s care instructions before using a dishwasher or a stronger cleaning method: what is safe depends on the bottle, lid, and finish. Routine cleaning is different from sanitizing or disinfecting.
How often should you clean a reusable water bottle?
Clean it regularly, but there is no single evidence-based interval that fits every bottle and use pattern. The Associated Press reported in 2025 that experts differ on exact timing; it also noted that mouths and hands can transfer germs to bottle surfaces and parts. How often you use the bottle and what you put in it can inform your routine, but the reviewed guidance does not establish a universal daily or weekly schedule. Associated Press report

How to wash the bottle and its parts
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions. Follow the directions for your specific bottle, especially before washing an insulated body, coated or printed finish, lid, straw, or seal in a dishwasher or with a special cleaning method. CDC advises using, cleaning, maintaining, and storing water-using devices according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. CDC: Preventing Drinking Water-Related Illnesses
- Empty and take apart removable pieces. Rinse out the bottle, then remove straws, seals, or other parts if the maker says they can be removed. Taking pieces apart helps expose surfaces that may otherwise be hard to wash. - Wash with soap and water. Scrub the interior and reachable surfaces, including the lid and removable parts. A narrow bottle brush can help reach the inside of a bottle, but it is an aid rather than a requirement. CDC says that, in most situations, cleaning surfaces with soap and water removes most germs. - Rinse and air-dry completely. Rinse away soap, then leave the bottle and its parts to dry fully before reassembling or storing them. Can you put a reusable bottle in the dishwasher?
Only if the manufacturer’s instructions say that your specific bottle and the relevant parts are dishwasher-safe. A bottle body, lid, straw, and seal may have different care limits, so check each part rather than assuming the whole set can go through the dishwasher. Do you need to sanitize or disinfect your bottle?
For routine care, washing with soap and water is the basic step; it is not the same as sanitizing or disinfecting. CDC says cleaning alone removes most germs from surfaces in most situations. Its general household-surface guidance says disinfection is generally appropriate when someone is sick or has recently visited, but that does not establish a bottle-specific chemical treatment. Check the manufacturer’s instructions before using bleach, boiling, or a dishwasher sanitizing cycle; the reviewed sources do not show those methods are safe for every reusable bottle.
