Before CAD/CAM design, keep implant-position data distinct from soft-tissue data, confirm the scan-body library mapping, and register the datasets using the workflow supported by your scanner and dental CAD software. “Cleaning” should not alter geometry that defines implant position: there is no universally established sequence for trimming, smoothing, filling holes, or remeshing these scans.
What each scan contributes
Extraoral photogrammetry records implant positions, not the surrounding soft-tissue morphology. The intraoral scan (IOS) supplies soft-tissue contours needed for a more complete restoration model. The ITI workflow guide by Dr. Kamil Zafar, Dr. Xiaoyu Li, Dr. Jianzhang Liu, and Dr. Bo Chen, published April 14, 2026, puts the distinction plainly: “EPG only captures the three-dimensional positions of implants and does not record the surrounding soft tissue morphology.” Read the ITI workflow guide.

Do not treat the photogrammetry file as a complete model of the mouth. The goal of registration is to combine implant locations from photogrammetry with soft-tissue contours from IOS while retaining the intended implant-position geometry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrepare the files and identify the scan bodies
Before registration, establish what each dataset represents and which implant library entry applies to the captured scan bodies. Check the scanner and CAD software instructions for the relevant file types, scan-body identities, implant connection, library, and export path. Preserve untouched copies of the original files so you can return to the source data if an edit or alignment produces an unexpected result.
#1 Best Overall
- Highly efficient: This plaque removal tool uses advanced high frequency vibration technology to remove plaque more effectively than manual dental tools.
- Protect your gums: The teeth tarter cleaner only starts working when the cleaning head touches the teeth, and stops working when it touches the gums. For new users we recommend starting with SOFT mode.
- User-friendly: Teeth cleaning kit for plaque remover features 5 switching modes and comes with 3 stainless steel replacement heads and a small handle.
- LED light and rechargeable: The dental calculus remover has LED lights on top to see your teeth more clearly. Charging with Type C USB, the 1500 mAh battery don't require frequent charging.
- Waterproof: The dental calculus remover for teeth supports waterproof system and can be washed directly with water.
Library mapping is a geometric workflow step, not cosmetic mesh cleanup. In its IntraoralScan 3.5.6 documentation for Aoralscan Elite, SHINING 3D describes selecting a manufacturer, implant type and subtype (or importing a local file), matching the coded scan body, and marking it to a tooth position. Those instructions are specific to that software version and system; use the corresponding instructions for your own setup. See SHINING 3D’s scan-body information.
Register the scans using the supported reference
Registration connects the implant-position dataset to the IOS data before design. The precise reference and sequence depend on the software and capture system. An ITI-described workflow aligns IOS scan bodies with standard scan bodies in a database, then matches those standard bodies to the scan bodies in the extraoral photogrammetry scan. The resulting integrated model uses photogrammetry for implant locations and IOS for soft tissue.

- RELACS 7000: This Plaque remover for teeth adopts technology that can effectively and quickly remove dental plaque, calculus, tartar, and stains. The vibration frequency is available in 5 modes 32kHz-55kHz. which can reduce possible damage to teeth caused by manual dental tools to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
- Safe & Painless: This Plaque Remover won't hurt your gums. Because it only works on teeth or hard objects. When the cleaning head touches hard plaques, it will start vibrating. When touching gums or soft skin, it will stop vibrating to keep gums safe. (Note: The handle will not vibrate and without sound. Use it on your teeth and you will feel it working.)
- 5 Safe Cleaning Modes & LED Light: The Plaque Remover has 5 modes, including the Soft, Normal, Middle, Strong and super modes, which is suitable for adults, teenager, elder, pets. The built-in led light can help you view dental stains clearly.
- RELACS 7000: This Plaque Remover comes with a USB charging cable. You can charge it with the USB socket, such as power bank, adapter, laptop, and power strip. 20 days of standby time and the compact design allows you to take it everywhere. IPX6 waterproof grade allows to wash it directly with water, which is safe and convenient.
- Advanced All-in-one Dental Cleaning Kit: This teeth cleaning kit includes 1 x plaque remover device, 3 x replacement cleaning heads, 2 pack stainless steel dental tools, 1 x mouth mirror, 1 x wrench, 1 x USB cable, 1 x protective cover, and a user manual, a dental probe, a Hoe-shaped scaler, and an oral mirror.
PIC Dental describes importing and aligning a PIC STL with standard mesh-alignment features in dental CAD software. This is a vendor description, not independent validation that every CAD package or workflow will behave the same way. See PIC Dental’s PIC file description.

SHINING 3D IntraoralScan 3.5.6 example
For Aoralscan Elite, SHINING 3D’s documented intraoral photogrammetry process includes jaw scanning, coded scan-body scanning, gingiva alignment, scan-body conversion and marking, and a bite check. If automatic alignment fails in that workflow, the documented manual fallback is to select three sets of corresponding points and preview the alignment before proceeding. Treat this as a software-specific recovery method, not a universal clinical protocol. See the version 3.5.6 scanning instructions.

Clean conservatively and inspect the result
Mesh editing and registration are separate tasks. Open Tech Dental’s wiki lists data editing, alignment, mesh generation, mesh editing, implant-library alignment, and CAD export as distinct functions; its wizard also lists base cutting and automatic cleaning. That documentation does not establish a universally safe cleaning recipe for photogrammetry scans. See the Open Tech Dental Wiki.
- Keep an unchanged copy of each original scan and make edits on working copies.
- Confirm the scan-body and implant/library identity before relying on the registered model.
- Inspect the registration result and the combined model before moving into CAD/CAM design.
- Do not assume trimming, smoothing, hole filling, or remeshing is harmless around geometry that defines implant position; follow the scanner and CAD software instructions for any such operation.
The available documentation does not establish a universal acceptance tolerance or validation protocol. Do not infer that a visually tidy mesh proves the implant-position registration is correct.

How to interpret published accuracy figures
An in-vitro study of intraoral photogrammetry reported a mean 3D Euclidean deviation of 57.22 ± 27.41 μm and a mean angular deviation of 0.26° ± 0.19° across 146 implant positions. These are results from that study’s test conditions, not a clinical guarantee, a universal result for all systems, or an acceptance threshold for a particular case. Read the in-vitro study.
Handoff to CAD/CAM design
Once the registration and library mapping have been checked, the integrated model can proceed to CAD/CAM design: the photogrammetry dataset contributes implant locations, and IOS contributes soft-tissue contours. Design and fit acceptance criteria depend on the clinical case and the applicable system workflow; the scan-registration sources do not establish a single criterion for them.
