To remove smudges, turn off and unplug your iPhone, then gently wipe the outside of the camera lens glass with a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber or lens cloth. Keep moisture out of openings, and skip sprays, abrasive materials and compressed air. If photos stay blurry, check for anything obstructing the camera before troubleshooting further.
Clean the exterior lens glass gently
- Turn off your iPhone and disconnect any cables. Apple recommends these precautions before cleaning the device’s exterior. See Apple’s iPhone cleaning guidance.
- Use a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber or lens cloth. Wipe the accessible front or rear camera glass gently; Apple specifically recommends a microfiber cloth for blurry photos in its camera troubleshooting guidance.
- Check the glass in good light. If a smudge remains, use a clean area of the cloth and wipe gently again rather than pressing hard.
This advice is for smudges on the outside of the lens glass. Apple’s guidance does not provide a user procedure for cleaning inside the camera module, so do not open the phone to remove internal dust or contamination.

What to avoid
- Do not spray liquid or cleaner onto the iPhone. Keep moisture out of openings. Apple advises against spraying cleaning products directly onto a product and warns about moisture entering openings in its cleaning instructions.
- Do not use compressed air. Apple cautions against it in its cleaning guidance and iPhone handling information.
- Avoid abrasive cloths and routine cleaning products. Apple warns these can diminish the iPhone’s fingerprint-resistant coating and may scratch the device. A soft cloth is the appropriate first choice.
- Skip paper towels and other rough materials. Use a soft, lint-free cloth instead of anything that could leave fibers or scratch the surface.
Apple discusses certain disinfectant wipes separately for disinfecting exterior surfaces; that allowance is not a recommendation to use them routinely on camera lenses. For ordinary smudges, a clean cloth is the simpler option.

If the camera is still blurry
Wiping the exterior glass may not fix blur caused by an obstruction or a camera problem. Apple’s troubleshooting steps are:

- Remove the case, film, lens accessory or other item that could cover or affect the camera. If you use a magnetic accessory or mount, remove it as well.
- Take another photo to check whether the image has improved.
- If blur persists, restart the iPhone and install the latest available iOS update, then test the camera again.
- If the camera still does not work properly after these checks, contact Apple Support or an Apple-authorized service provider. Apple says service may be needed.
