To clean a washing machine drain pump filter, first confirm your exact model has a user-serviceable filter. Turn the washer off and unplug it, let any hot water cool, drain the residual water using the model’s specified method, then remove and clean the filter and reinstall it securely. The filter’s location, access method and cleaning interval vary by model, so use the owner’s manual for your washer.
Check whether your washer has a serviceable filter
Do not assume every washing machine has a drain pump filter that owners can remove. Check the model number and consult the owner’s manual before opening a panel. LG says its drain pump filter is included on its front-load washers and combo units, but not its top-load washers; other brands and models may differ. What to prepare
- A shallow, wide pan and towels to catch water.
- A soft-bristle brush for cleaning the filter.
- Your washer’s owner’s manual, especially if the machine lacks a small drain hose or has a special water-tightness check.
No washer-branded tool is required by the manufacturer instructions cited here. Unplug the washer before cleaning when the manual directs; LG warns of electric-shock risk if the plug is not removed. Clean the filter step by step
- Finish or cancel the cycle if possible. Empty the drum, switch the washer off and unplug it. Let hot water cool before opening the service area.
- Locate the access panel and catch residual water. Its position varies by model. On the LG models covered by its support instructions, the panel is low on the front; the side can vary. Set a shallow pan and towels beneath the area. LG USA Support.
- Drain the washer using the specified method. If the washer has a small drain hose, pull it out carefully, keeping it from kinking, and direct it into the pan. Remove the hose plug and let the water drain; replace the plug afterward. If there is no small hose, follow the manual’s method. Do not open the filter before draining when the manual instructs you to drain first.
- Remove the filter once the water has drained. On the LG and Samsung instructions cited here, the filter unscrews counterclockwise. Remove it gently; do not force a stuck filter. Samsung US Support.
- Clean accessible parts. Remove lint and objects from the filter, then rinse and brush it gently with warm water and a soft-bristle brush. Clean only surfaces that the manual identifies as accessible. Samsung also advises checking the accessible pump impeller area for debris. Do not reach into inaccessible components. - Reinstall the filter and hose. Replace the filter and turn it clockwise until secure. Recap the small drain hose, return it to its holder, and close the panel. Incorrect filter or plug reassembly can cause leaks or malfunction, according to LG’s washer manual.
- Follow the manual’s post-cleaning check. Some model-family instructions call for a water-tightness check; do not assume that the same test applies to every washer. For example, Whirlpool’s compact front-load instructions say to open the filter gradually to drain in stages and then check water tightness by pouring about one liter of water through the detergent dispenser. How often to clean it
Use the interval in your model’s manual rather than applying one schedule to all washers. LG recommends monthly cleaning for the front-load washers and combo units covered by its support instructions, particularly checking when drainage is slow or an OE error appears. Whirlpool’s guidance for the cited all-in-one washer-dryer family recommends cleaning every six months. These are product-specific recommendations, not universal intervals. If the washer still has a problem
- Water leaks after cleaning: Switch the washer off and recheck that the filter and drain-hose plug are seated as the manual specifies.
- The filter will not turn: Do not force it. Check the model instructions or contact the manufacturer’s service support.
- The pump impeller will not turn: Bosch advises contacting customer service if the impeller cannot turn. Bosch Home support.
- Drainage remains slow or the washer will not drain: Check the drain hose and the model’s error guidance. Filter cleaning may not resolve every drainage fault; consult the manufacturer or arrange service if the problem continues.
