A “local” AI assistant is not automatically private: its model may run on your device while chats, files, metadata, or diagnostics are stored or sent elsewhere. Before sharing study material, verify the active model and endpoint, check the assistant’s and provider’s policies, inspect connected features and permissions, and find out what is retained and how deletion works.
What “local” does—and does not—tell you
“Local” can describe where a model runs, not every place your study data goes. An assistant may use an on-device model, a model on another computer or server, or a third-party API. The selected model, endpoint, and any cloud fallback determine where inference happens and where prompts and outputs may be sent. LocalLM, for example, says prompts, outputs, and associated metadata go directly to a third-party provider when one is configured: LocalLM’s privacy policy.

Inference and storage are separate questions. Chat history, uploaded files, notes, credentials, summaries, or embeddings might persist on the device, in an account, or in a synced location. A locally stored conversation can still be exposed through access to the device or its backups. A June 2026 paper on on-device AI likewise argues that inference location alone does not answer who assembles context, what derived information persists, or which actions are authorized: “Local Is Not a Sufficient Privacy Boundary”.

Use “device-only” as a conclusion to verify, not a label to trust. It should mean that the relevant study content is processed and retained only where you intend, with no unexamined provider, sync, or connected-service path.

How to check an assistant before using it
- List the information you might share. Consider a typed question, a passage from your notes, an uploaded document, a screenshot, conversation history, and any context from connected apps or tools. Decide which material is too sensitive to enter unless you can verify its route and retention.
- Identify the model and endpoint actually in use. In the assistant’s current settings, find the selected model, endpoint or server, and any fallback or cloud option. Determine whether the model runs on your device, on another computer on your local network, on a self-hosted remote server, or with a third-party provider. A self-hosted model on a remote server is not device-only processing.
- Read two sets of terms separately. Check the assistant’s policy and, if a provider is involved, that provider’s policy. Look for what happens to prompts, outputs, attachments, and metadata; whether content may be used for training or reviewed by people; how long it is retained; and whether it is shared or disclosed. A client’s policy does not settle a provider’s practices.
- Inspect optional features and permissions. Review web search, connected apps, file or screen access, voice, sync, diagnostics, and other enabled integrations. Turn off what you do not need, then check how to revoke access. A cloud-service disclosure can illustrate the kinds of context at stake: Google says signed-in Gemini Apps may process information from files, apps, devices, permissions, connected services, and location, depending on the product and use. - Find where data and derived state are kept. Look for chat history, uploads, notes, keys, summaries, and embeddings. Check whether they sync or enter backups, how long they remain, and what “clear history,” “delete,” and uninstall actually remove. Deleting a chat from one screen may not delete synced copies, backups, or separate derived data; confirm the product’s stated controls.
- Check operational traffic, not just AI requests. Policies may describe analytics, usage events, crash reports, license checks, account records, model downloads, or updates separately from inference. Look for whether these include content or only operational metadata. An offline model does not by itself establish that the whole application makes no network requests.
- Decide using what you can verify. If you cannot establish whether coursework goes to a provider, history syncs, or cloud fallback is active, do not upload sensitive material until the uncertainty is resolved. If your requirement is strictly on-device processing, use a configuration whose model and data path you can confirm and disable optional cloud-connected features.
What policy examples can—and cannot—tell you
Vendor statements are specific to a product, feature, and account context; they are not interchangeable guarantees for all assistants. Microsoft’s page for its Study and Learn Agent says messages and uploaded documents are processed in real time, basic feature-usage telemetry may be collected but not conversation or study-material content, and content and conversations are not used to train its underlying models. Microsoft describes that service with the phrase “Your data is your data.” See Microsoft’s Study and Learn Agent privacy information.
Google’s Gemini Apps notice describes service-improvement uses and human review in its stated context. That is not the same product or account setting as Microsoft’s Study and Learn Agent, so the statements should not be treated as a direct like-for-like comparison. Read the terms that apply to the assistant, provider, account, and features you actually use.

Compare assistants with the same checklist
Use these questions for each candidate rather than relying on a “local” or “private” label.

Keep local data safe on the device
When content stays on a device, device and account security still matter. Anyone who can use an unlocked device or access its operating-system account may be able to reach locally stored chats or files. Backups and sync can create additional copies. Check who can sign in, whether backups include assistant data, and which stored items the app’s deletion controls cover.
