Start with the backpack’s care label: cleaning instructions vary by brand and material. For a JanSport backpack, the maker recommends emptying it, wiping gently with cool water, spot-cleaning as needed, and air-drying it completely. JanSport says not to machine-wash, use detergent, or use bleach. For any other bag, follow its own manufacturer’s instructions.
Check the care label before you clean
Look for a sewn-in care label or instructions from the backpack’s manufacturer. Pack designs differ: some makers permit submersion, while others advise against it. REI’s general guidance is to follow the maker’s recommendations for your specific pack, rather than assuming one cleaning method works for every school bag. REI Co-op’s backpack cleaning and care guide explains the variation.
Pay particular attention to materials and trim. JanSport warns that water can damage suede or leather details on some bags, and REI cautions that vigorous scrubbing can harm protective coatings. If the care instructions prohibit water or soap on a component, keep that area dry and follow the maker’s recommended treatment.
How to clean a backpack gently
- Empty every pocket and compartment. Remove all contents, turn the bag upside down, and shake out crumbs and grit. If debris is lodged in seams or corners, use a vacuum hose gently. JanSport and REI both recommend clearing loose debris before cleaning.
- Wipe with a damp cloth. Dampen a clean sponge or washcloth with cool water and wipe the dirty surface. Clean the lining only as the bag’s instructions allow. Avoid soaking the backpack unless its manufacturer specifically permits submersion.
- Treat stubborn spots only if allowed. If the care instructions permit soap, use a small amount of mild soap on a cloth or a soft nylon-bristled brush. Work gently on the spot; hard scrubbing can abrade mesh or damage a coating. Keep water and soap away from leather or suede trim when the maker warns against them, and remove residue as instructed.
- Air-dry the bag fully. Hang it open so air can reach the compartments and lining. Follow the manufacturer’s directions about where to dry it; REI recommends shade or indoors for technical packs to limit UV exposure. Do not use a tumble dryer unless the backpack’s instructions expressly allow it.
Can you wash a backpack in the washing machine?
Do not assume a school backpack is machine-washable. JanSport says its backpacks are hand-wash only and warns that washing-machine agitation can affect shape or finish and snag straps. REI likewise advises against machine washing as general practice, while directing owners to the specific pack maker’s care instructions. JanSport’s Canada FAQ also recommends spot cleaning or hand washing, followed by air- or line-drying, and says not to use detergent or bleach.

What supplies do you need?
- For light dirt: a clean sponge or washcloth and cool water may be enough.
- For a stubborn spot: if the care instructions allow it, use a little mild soap and a soft nylon-bristled brush or used toothbrush. A brush is optional; use it gently, especially around mesh and coatings.
JanSport also describes a backpack stain remover for 600-denier polyester and Cordura fabrics: apply it to a wet cloth, sponge, or brush, wipe away excess moisture and dirt with a clean dry towel, and let the item dry completely. That guidance applies to the stated compatible fabrics, not to every backpack; check your bag’s care instructions before using it. JanSport’s cleaning guide gives its instructions.
