Scrub the bottle interior, lid grooves and any straw passage with suitable brushes, rinse everything thoroughly, and air-dry all parts completely before reassembly. Check the care instructions for your exact bottle and lid before using a dishwasher or any stain-removal treatment: dishwasher compatibility and cleaning directions vary by model and component.
What you need before you start
For routine washing, use warm water, mild dish soap, a bottle brush that can reach the bottle’s interior and base, and—if your bottle has a straw—a narrow brush long enough to pass through it. A soft-bristle brush is useful for a straw’s full inside length; choose a size that fits without forcing it. A clean place to leave the separated parts to air-dry is also important.

First check the bottle’s care label or the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model. Look for directions about disassembly, dishwasher use, cap components and any special coatings or finishes. A bottle body, lid, gasket and straw may have different care requirements, even when they came as one product. If you cannot identify a removable part from the instructions, do not pry or force it out.

Before washing, make sure you have a brush that can reach the full interior rather than just the bottle opening. The same principle applies to a straw: a narrow brush should be long enough to pass through its full length. A brush that is too wide or stiff may be difficult to use safely, so choose one that fits the passage without forcing it. Keep the lid pieces separated while washing and drying, but remove only the parts the maker identifies as removable.

Wash the bottle and lid step by step
- Empty and rinse. Pour out the remaining drink and rinse the bottle with warm water to loosen leftover liquid or residue.
- Open the lid and separate designed-to-be-removable parts. Depending on the design, these might include a straw, gasket, slider or mouthpiece. Follow the product’s instructions for taking them apart. Leave fixed valves and seals in place rather than pulling at them.
- Wash the bottle. Add warm water and dish soap, then scrub the inner walls and base with a bottle brush. Move the brush around the full interior rather than only washing the opening. Wash the outside as needed.
- Wash the lid and separate components. Use soapy water and a suitable brush to clean the lid, threads, mouthpiece and accessible grooves. Clean each removed gasket or other part as its care instructions allow. If there is a straw, run a narrow brush through its full inside length; washing only its ends can leave residue in the passage.
- Rinse every part thoroughly. Rinse the bottle, lid and components with clean water until loosened residue and soap are gone. Check grooves and openings rather than rinsing only the broad surfaces.
- Air-dry before reassembly. Keep parts separated and open so air can reach them. Once everything is completely dry, put the pieces back together in the manufacturer’s specified orientation.
A quick rinse by itself is not a thorough wash: it does not replace soap and scrubbing on the bottle and its parts. Cleveland Clinic’s August 15, 2024 article on water-bottle mold quotes internal medicine physician Marianne Sumego, MD, describing slide mouthpieces and straws as areas “that aren’t easy to reach,” and recommends disassembling removable pieces to clean those spaces.
The sequence matters: first loosen and remove leftover drink, then expose the removable parts, wash the surfaces and passages, rinse away soap and residue, and allow everything to dry before reassembly. Washing the bottle body does not clean the lid’s hidden or narrow areas. Likewise, putting parts in a dishwasher does not mean that every surface has been reached or that components can be put away damp. Follow your model’s directions at each stage.
How to clean the parts people often miss
Straws and narrow passages
Use a narrow, soft-bristle straw brush that is long enough to reach through the entire passage. Wet the brush with soapy water and pass it through the straw from both ends if the design allows. Rinse the straw thoroughly so soap and loosened residue are flushed out. If the straw or passage cannot be reached with the cleaning method specified by the manufacturer, consult the product instructions rather than improvising with a sharp object or forcing a brush through a tight opening.

If the straw is a removable component, clean it separately according to its care directions. Do not force a brush into a narrow passage that it does not fit. The purpose is to scrub the interior with a suitable brush, not to risk damage to the straw or cap.
Threads, sliders and mouthpieces
Residue can collect where the lid meets the bottle and in accessible grooves around a slider or mouthpiece. Wash those areas with soapy water and a brush sized for the opening. Do not assume that a cap’s outside is the only area that needs cleaning: clean the accessible surfaces on the underside and around openings as well. If the cap design has parts that the maker says should be removed for washing, separate them according to its directions.
Pay attention to the places where components meet: the bottle threads, the lid’s underside, openings and any accessible grooves. The exact construction differs by product, so use the manufacturer’s instructions to identify which pieces can come apart and how they should be handled. A detailed wash means reaching the accessible surfaces on both the bottle and lid, not simply rinsing the mouthpiece.

Gaskets and seals
Some lids have removable seals or gaskets, while others have components that are fixed or should not be removed by the user. Follow the model-specific disassembly guidance. For a removable seal, wash it separately and note its orientation before removing it so you can reinstall it as directed. Do not stretch, cut, or pry at a fixed seal. If a gasket remains visibly contaminated and the manufacturer’s cleaning directions do not resolve the problem, check the product guidance about replacement.
Reassembly is part of cleaning correctly. Once the gasket and other parts are fully dry, put them back in the orientation specified by the maker. Avoid guessing if a seal’s position is unclear; consult the model’s instructions. If a component cannot be cleaned as directed or remains visibly contaminated, check the manufacturer’s advice about replacement rather than continuing to use it without guidance.
Dishwasher or hand washing?
Neither method is a universal choice for every reusable bottle. Dishwasher eligibility can depend on the model, the bottle’s generation and the individual cap components. Check the care label or manufacturer’s instructions for the exact product, not just the brand name or a similar-looking bottle.
| Question | What to check |
|---|---|
| Is the bottle body dishwasher-safe? | Confirm that the exact model is approved for dishwasher use. Do not infer eligibility from another model in the same product line. |
| Are the lid and its parts dishwasher-safe? | Check the directions for the lid, straw, gasket and other components individually. A dishwasher-safe bottle does not establish that every cap part is dishwasher-safe. |
| Can the relevant surfaces be reached and cleaned? | Whether you wash by hand or use an approved dishwasher cycle, make sure the cleaning method reaches residue-prone passages and removable pieces. |
| Can every component dry completely? | After washing, leave parts open and separated until fully dry. Do not reassemble or store a damp bottle. |
Manufacturer examples show why the model check matters. Hydro Flask’s May 1, 2024 cleaning guidance says newer bottles are dishwasher-safe but identifies older bottles bearing its trademark mark and Trail Series bottles as hand-wash-only; it also notes other product exceptions. YETI publishes dishwasher directions for its Rambler drinkware and lid components. These are brand- and product-specific examples, not a rule for other bottles. Follow the exact care instructions for yours.
If you cannot confirm dishwasher eligibility, hand washing with warm water, dish soap and appropriate brushes is the straightforward routine described above. Dishwasher use does not remove the need to check cap instructions, clean any passages the cycle may not reach, and dry components fully.

When comparing the methods, use three questions rather than assuming one is always better: Is this exact bottle and cap approved for a dishwasher? Can the method reach and clean all relevant surfaces and passages? Can every part be dried completely before reassembly? If you wash by hand, a bottle brush and a narrow straw brush help reach the interior. If you use a dishwasher, follow the model’s directions for each component and still inspect the cap for areas that need separate attention.

How often to wash it, and when to stop using it
Marianne Sumego, MD, in Cleveland Clinic’s August 15, 2024 guidance, recommends rinsing a bottle with warm water after each use and doing a weekly deep clean that includes disassembling removable parts. Treat that as practical guidance rather than a universal legal or scientific schedule; follow any more specific instructions supplied with your bottle.
Do not keep drinking from a bottle that has visible residue or signs it needs a deeper clean. Cleveland Clinic lists fuzzy or slimy spots, a thin film or residue, a musty or unusual smell, cloudy-looking water and a strange taste as warning signs. If you find mold, stop using the bottle until it has been cleaned. If a component remains visibly contaminated after cleaning according to the maker’s directions, consult the manufacturer’s guidance about whether it should be replaced.
A warm-water rinse after use and a weekly deep clean are the frequency recommendations Sumego gives; they are practical guidance, not a universal schedule for every person or bottle. A warning sign should prompt attention rather than waiting for the next scheduled deep clean. Stop using the bottle until it has been cleaned if you notice visible mold, fuzzy or slimy spots, film, residue, an unusual smell, cloudy water or an odd taste. If cleaning as directed does not resolve visible contamination on a component, ask the manufacturer whether it should be replaced.
Stains, persistent odor and cleaning products
For an ordinary wash, use warm water and dish soap. Do not assume that bleach, vinegar, boiling water or a cleaning tablet is safe for every bottle material, finish, gasket and cap. The available product guidance does not establish one treatment that applies to all reusable drinkware. For an exceptional stain or a disinfection procedure, use only directions that specifically apply to your bottle and follow the cleaner’s label.
Hydro Flask warns against dishwasher cleansers containing bleach or chlorine. CDC guidance about cleaning and disinfecting with bleach is general surface guidance, not a reusable-bottle cleaning protocol, so it should not be treated as product-specific permission to use bleach on a bottle or lid.
YETI describes its own cleaning tablets as an option for stubborn coffee or tea stains, followed by rinsing and a dishwasher cycle. That is optional, manufacturer-specific stain care—not a required routine wash and not a recommendation for other brands’ products. If a stain or odor persists, first confirm that removable pieces and narrow passages were cleaned and fully dried, then consult the maker’s instructions for that specific product.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For persistent marks or odor, start by checking whether the bottle, lid, removable parts and narrow passages were washed and dried as directed. Do not jump to a stronger cleaner or heat treatment simply because the first wash did not resolve an issue; a treatment suitable for one material or cap may not suit another. YETI’s tablet directions are specifically an optional stain-care example for its drinkware, not a general treatment for all bottles. Read both the bottle instructions and the cleaner label before using any exceptional treatment.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Rinsing without washing: A rinse can clear remaining drink, but use dish soap and scrub the bottle and its components for a thorough wash.
- Cleaning only the bottle body: Wash the lid and accessible grooves, and clean a straw’s interior with a narrow brush.
- Pulling out parts that are not meant to come out: Remove only pieces the product instructions identify as removable. Forcing a fixed valve or seal can damage it.
- Assuming the whole product is dishwasher-safe: Check the bottle and each relevant lid component for the exact model’s care directions.
- Reassembling while parts are damp: Dry components separately and completely before putting the lid back together or storing the bottle.
- Applying a familiar cleaner without checking compatibility: Bleach, vinegar, boiling water and tablets are not established as universal treatments for all drinkware. Follow the maker’s directions for stains or exceptional cleaning.
A practical cleaning checklist
- Empty the bottle and rinse away leftover drink.
- Check the model-specific care directions before disassembling parts or using a dishwasher or special cleaner.
- Separate only the lid parts the manufacturer identifies as removable.
- Wash the bottle, lid and removable components with warm water and dish soap.
- Brush the bottle interior, accessible lid grooves and the full inside of any straw.
- Rinse soap and loosened residue from every component.
- Air-dry all pieces completely while separated, then reassemble as directed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is rinsing a reusable water bottle enough?
No. A warm-water rinse can clear leftover drink, but it is not a thorough wash. Use warm water and dish soap, scrub the bottle interior and lid components, and clean a straw’s full inside length with a suitable narrow brush. Rinse every part thoroughly afterward.
How often should I clean my reusable bottle?
Cleveland Clinic’s August 15, 2024 guidance quotes internal medicine physician Marianne Sumego, MD, recommending a warm-water rinse after each use and a weekly deep clean that includes disassembling removable parts. Treat this as practical guidance, and follow any more specific care directions for your bottle.
Do I need to take apart the lid every time I wash the bottle?
Separate the parts the manufacturer identifies as removable so you can clean residue-prone areas, but do not force out fixed seals or valves. Follow the instructions for your exact cap. Sumego’s weekly deep-clean recommendation includes disassembling removable parts; the product maker’s directions govern how to take them apart and put them back together.
Can I put my bottle and lid in the dishwasher?
Only if the care instructions for your exact model and components say they are dishwasher-safe. Compatibility can vary by bottle generation, model and lid part. Hydro Flask, for example, identifies some older trademark-marked bottles and Trail Series bottles as hand-wash-only, while YETI publishes directions for its Rambler drinkware and lid components. These examples do not determine care for another product.

Use a narrow, appropriately sized soft-bristle brush long enough to reach the straw’s full inside length. Wash with soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Do not force an oversized brush into the passage or use a sharp object. If the straw or passage cannot be reached using the method specified by the manufacturer, consult the product instructions.

Can I use bleach, vinegar or boiling water to clean my bottle?
Do not assume these treatments are safe for every bottle, finish, gasket or lid. The product guidance does not establish a universal bleach, vinegar or boiling-water method. Hydro Flask warns against dishwasher cleansers containing bleach or chlorine. For a stain or disinfection procedure, follow directions specific to your bottle and the cleaner’s label.
What if my bottle smells unusual or has spots inside?
Stop using it until it has been cleaned if you notice fuzzy or slimy spots, a film, residue, a musty or unusual smell, cloudy-looking water or a strange taste. Cleveland Clinic advises stopping use and cleaning if mold is found. If a component remains visibly contaminated after cleaning as directed, consult the manufacturer about replacement.
Can cleaning tablets remove coffee or tea stains?
YETI describes its cleaning tablets as an optional treatment for stubborn coffee or tea stains, followed by rinsing and a dishwasher cycle. This is manufacturer-specific stain care, not a required routine wash or a universal recommendation for other brands. Check your own bottle’s care directions before using a tablet.
Should I put the lid back on while the bottle is still damp?
No. Keep the bottle and its parts open and separated so air can reach them. Reassemble only when every component is completely dry, and follow the maker’s directions for the orientation of seals and gaskets. Do not store a damp bottle.
The Bottom Line
For a routine clean, wash the bottle, lid and manufacturer-approved removable parts with warm water and dish soap; use a bottle brush for the interior and a narrow brush for a straw. Rinse thoroughly and air-dry everything completely before reassembly. Check the exact model’s instructions before using a dishwasher or special stain treatment.
