Rinse your removable retainer after taking it out, then gently brush every surface with a soft toothbrush and cool or lukewarm water. For daily cleaning, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends dish soap; mild liquid soap or plain water are also supported by NHS patient guidance. Avoid heat, abrasive cleaning and any method your orthodontist has not approved for your appliance.
Clean a removable retainer each day
- Rinse it when you remove it. This helps wash away saliva and loose debris before they dry on the appliance.
- Brush gently. Use a soft-bristled or dedicated retainer toothbrush with cool or lukewarm water. The AAO’s detailed home-care guide recommends dish soap for daily brushing. NHS instructions describe mild liquid soap and water; some say plain water is adequate.
- Rinse thoroughly. Wash away any soap residue before putting the retainer back in your mouth.
Brush over a sink where you can safely recover the appliance if it slips. A specialty retainer brush is optional; a clean, soft toothbrush is sufficient when it is compatible with your orthodontist’s instructions.

Toothpaste advice depends on your appliance
Toothpaste guidance is not uniform. The AAO’s detailed 2025 guide and patient instructions from Oxford Health NHS and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS advise against toothpaste, while older AAO material notes that some orthodontists may include toothpaste in appliance-specific instructions. Because abrasive formulas can be unsuitable for some retainers, use the cleaning method your treating orthodontist recommended rather than treating toothpaste as a universal choice.

Keep heat and harsh cleaners away
Do not clean a plastic retainer with hot or boiling water, and do not leave it somewhere hot. Heat can distort the appliance and change its fit. Avoid bleach, alcohol-based mouthwash, strong detergents and abrasive cleaning methods unless a clinician who knows your retainer has specifically approved them. Advice intended for dentures should not automatically be applied to an orthodontic retainer.

Use soaking cleaners only when appropriate
Retainer cleaning tablets or solutions can be an optional periodic deeper-cleaning step, but they are not a required daily routine or a guaranteed disinfectant. AAO and NHS guidance describes weekly use as an option, while product directions and recommended soak times vary. Check that the cleaner is suitable for your specific retainer, follow its label and your orthodontist’s directions, and rinse the appliance as instructed before wearing it.
Store a removable retainer in its case
When you are not wearing the retainer, put it in its protective case and keep it away from heat. A case helps prevent it from being misplaced or exposed to damaging conditions.

Clean a fixed retainer without removing it
A bonded retainer stays in place, so do not try to remove it for soaking. Brush carefully around the wire and floss under or between it each day. If you find it difficult to clean those areas, ask a dental professional to show you an appropriate technique or tool.
Know when to contact your orthodontist
Contact your orthodontist if a retainer is cracked or warped, a wire is loose, it hurts, or it no longer fits as usual. Do not force a painful or damaged retainer into place; your orthodontist can advise whether it needs assessment or replacement.
