A UV feature is not required for this basic spot-cleaning, but wiping a mattress does not remove embedded dust-mite allergens or treat bed bugs.
Before cleaning, check the mattress care instructions
Remove the sheets and protector, then read the mattress tag and the manufacturer’s model-specific care guidance before removing a cover or applying liquid. Covers may be fixed, non-washable, or unsuitable for wet cleaning, and foam materials can be damaged by moisture.

For example, Tempur-Pedic says its TEMPUR-Material should not be soaked, washed, or allowed to become wet. It advises blotting spills and gently spot-cleaning fixed covers without saturation. Sleep Number says not to remove or machine-wash its mattress cover, and warns that sprays can soak fabric and cause shrinking or stains. These instructions are examples, not rules for every mattress.
How to spot-clean a spill or stain
- Blot fresh liquid. Press a clean, absorbent cloth against the spill to lift moisture. Avoid rubbing if the manufacturer recommends blotting.
- Use only approved moisture. For a stain, follow the maker’s directions and apply the smallest amount of permitted cleaner or water. Sleep Number recommends a clean white cloth lightly dampened with water and gentle rubbing. Stearns & Foster recommends mild soap with cold or warm water applied lightly; its covers are spot-clean only and are not water-resistant.
- Do not saturate the mattress. Moisture can penetrate the cover and core, where it may be difficult to dry. Do not assume a cleaner, spray, or wet-cleaning method is safe unless the mattress maker allows it. Do not mix cleaners.
- Air-dry fully. Leave the mattress uncovered until the treated area is completely dry before replacing bedding. A fan can help move air across the area if the maker’s instructions permit it.
Spot-cleaning may not remove a stain, especially if it is old or has penetrated the fabric. Avoid treating the mattress with bleach, peroxide, vinegar, baking soda, or steam as a universal solution; compatibility depends on its materials and care instructions. Do not call a wipe-down disinfecting or sanitizing: the guidance here does not establish that result.

For crumbs and dust, know what wiping can—and cannot—do
For loose visible debris when a vacuum is not available, remove what you can gently with a dry cloth. Wiping is not equivalent to vacuuming and does not establish that dust mites or their allergens have been removed from the mattress.
For dust-mite allergy management, Mayo Clinic recommends hot-water washing bedding at 130°F (54.4°C) or above and drying it completely. The temperature applies to washable bedding, not to applying heat or water to a mattress. The CDC’s asthma guidance suggests keeping indoor relative humidity around 30–50% to help control dust-mite triggers. These measures address allergy triggers; a vacuum-free wipe-down is not a substitute for them.

If you suspect bed bugs, treat it as a pest problem
Bed bugs are not evidence that a mattress or room is dirty. The CDC states: “How clean a place is does not determine whether bed bugs are present.” Look for bugs in mattress folds, shed skins, rusty-colored blood spots, or a sweet, musty odor. If you suspect an infestation, contact a pest-control company experienced in bed-bug treatment rather than relying on household cleaning alone. CDC bed-bug guidance and the EPA’s bed-bug control guidance describe broader pest-control measures.
When surface cleaning is not enough
Stubborn or widespread staining, mold, floodwater exposure, or contamination that has soaked deeply into the mattress is beyond ordinary spot-cleaning. Ask the mattress maker or a qualified cleaner whether it can be cleaned and dried safely; replacement may be necessary if it cannot.

To reduce future liquid damage, consider a compatible water-resistant mattress protector. Stearns & Foster recommends one for protection against liquid damage. A protector helps prevent damage; it does not clean an existing stain. Check that its size and care requirements suit your mattress.
