Choose more storage if you want to keep a large game library installed, and more than 32GB of RAM if you plan to stream, heavily mod games, or run demanding applications alongside them. These are planning recommendations, not requirements for every game or system.
How much RAM should a high-end gaming PC have?
Plan on 32GB for a high-end gaming PC used for gaming and ordinary multitasking. Intel says modern gaming needs at least 16GB, while its pre-built gaming PC guide describes 32GB as ideal when you run several applications alongside a game. Neither figure means every game requires that amount; 16GB is a baseline, while 32GB gives more room for concurrent use.

More than 32GB may make sense for heavy modding, streaming, or other demanding workloads running at the same time as a game. Intel identifies simultaneous processes and heavy modding as reasons to use more memory, but the cited guidance does not establish a universal 64GB requirement for gaming alone. Intel’s gaming PC build guide and pre-built PC guide give the relevant recommendations.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose compatible memory before chasing speed
Check the memory type and supported speeds for both your processor and motherboard before buying. Memory rated above what the system supports will run at a lower supported speed. Choose a matched kit rather than combining separate kits: Intel cautions that specifications can vary between kits and manufacturers. High-speed memory may also require enabling a profile such as Intel XMP in firmware; Intel describes XMP as a way to load predefined memory profiles. Actual support depends on the specific components.

How much SSD storage is enough for games?
A 1TB SSD is a sensible starting point for a high-end gaming PC intended to hold a substantial library. Go larger if you want many large games and applications installed at once. Capacity needs are driven by what you keep installed: Intel’s pre-built PC guide calls 500GB a good place to start and notes that some new games can require over 100GB each. Those are guidance examples, not a guarantee about every game. AMD lists 1TB or more of NVMe storage in its Advantage Premium gaming laptop specifications; that is a vendor specification for a laptop product category, not a universal desktop rule. AMD’s Advantage systems page provides that example.
Use an SSD as the main game and system drive
Install the operating system and games on an SSD. Intel says an SSD is almost always preferable to an HDD as the primary drive. NVMe SSDs use the PCIe interface for higher storage performance, but the cited guidance does not establish that a particular PCIe generation is required for gaming or that storage speed alone determines game performance.

Add a hard drive only for capacity-focused storage
If your library or file collection outgrows your SSD, a secondary HDD can provide more capacity at lower cost per capacity for files and games you use less often. It is not a performance substitute for an SSD. Intel describes a setup with an SSD for the operating system, games, and programs, plus HDDs for additional capacity.

Quick recommendations by use
| Use case | RAM plan | Storage plan |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming with ordinary multitasking | 32GB is a practical target; Intel cites at least 16GB for modern gaming. | 1TB SSD is a sensible starting point for a substantial library; choose capacity by how much you keep installed. |
| Gaming with heavy modding, streaming, or demanding concurrent apps | Consider more than 32GB based on the workload; the cited guidance does not set a universal higher threshold. | Use an SSD for the system and games; add capacity if your installed library needs it. |
| Large library or many less-used files | Base RAM on games and applications you run at once. | Choose a larger SSD, or add an HDD for less-used files when capacity cost matters more than SSD performance. |
What to check before buying
- Confirm the motherboard and processor support the memory type and speed of the RAM kit.
- Prefer one matched memory kit over mixing kits with different specifications.
- Estimate storage from the games and applications you want installed simultaneously, allowing room beyond the operating system and current library.
- Keep the SSD as the primary drive for the operating system and games; treat an HDD as optional capacity for less-used files.
